The ordinary Filipino linker has three sound-conditioned shapes. Use attached -ng after a vowel, attached -g after n, and separate na after every other consonant. In this system, na and -ng do not carry different meanings; the final sound immediately before the boundary chooses the form.
This decision is therefore unlike choosing between English prepositions. First confirm that a linker relation exists, then inspect the last sound of the complete preceding element. Also keep linker na separate from the enclitic particle na “already/now.”
The complete choice
| Preceding ending | Linker form | Formation | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| vowel | attached -ng | bago + -ng tuntunin | bagong tuntunin |
| n | attached -g | huwaran + -g pinuno | huwarang pinuno |
| any other consonant | separate na | mahusay + na pinuno | mahusay na pinuno |
Written w and y count as consonants: hilaw na mangga, makulay na tela. The following word's first sound does not affect the choice.
A three-step diagnostic
- Are two elements in a modifier–head, complement, numeral–noun, or similar linking relation? If not, no linker is required.
- What is the final sound of the element immediately before the boundary?
- Attach -ng after a vowel, attach -g after n, or write separate na after another consonant.
Maikling pulong lang ang kailangan para pagtibayin ang iskedyul.
Only a short meeting is needed to approve the schedule.
Mahusay na tagapagsalita ang napili ng samahan.
The organization chose a capable spokesperson.
Huwarang lingkod-bayan ang pinarangalan kahapon.
An exemplary public servant was honored yesterday.
Maikli ends in a vowel, mahusay in y, and huwaran in n. The meaning relation is comparable, but phonology chooses three different surface forms.
Controlled contrast through word order
Moving a property word changes which element stands before the linker.
Sariwang gulay ang binili ni Dante sa palengke.
Dante bought fresh vegetables at the market. (sariwa ends in a vowel)
Gulay na sariwa ang kailangan ng kusina, hindi iyong lantang nasa kahon.
The kitchen needs vegetables that are fresh, not the wilted ones in the box. (gulay ends in y)
The property is the same. Sariwa + -ng gives sariwang; gulay + na gives gulay na. Post-nominal order can make the description heavier or more contrastive, but na itself does not create that discourse effect.
The choice is equally local inside a longer phrase:
Inilipat nila ang dalawang maliit na kahong gawa sa matibay na kahoy.
They moved the two small boxes made of sturdy wood.
Each boundary is calculated separately: dalawa → dalawang, maliit → maliit na, kahon → kahong, matibay → matibay na.
Where linkers occur
Linkers connect far more than simple adjectives and nouns. They follow numerals, some pronouns, demonstrative-like modifiers, and expressions that take a complement.
Tatlong boluntaryo ang mananatili sa klinika ngayong gabi.
Three volunteers will remain at the clinic tonight.
Kailangan nating tapusin ang ulat bago magtanghali.
We need to finish the report before noon.
In tatlong, vowel-final tatlo takes -ng. In nating tapusin, natin ends in n, so attached -g links the inclusive pronoun to the following complement. This is not case marking or an English possessive suffix.
Questions and negation do not change the allomorph:
Malinis na ba ang silid na gagamitin ng mga bisita?
Is the room that the guests will use clean now?
Here the first na is the phase particle “now/already,” while silid na gagamitin contains a linker. The identical spelling performs two different jobs.
Linker na versus particle na
Malinaw na tagubilin ang kailangan ng pangkat.
The group needs clear instructions. (linker na)
Malinaw na ang tagubilin sa pangkat.
The instruction is clear to the group now. (phase particle na)
In the first, malinaw na tagubilin is one noun phrase. In the second, malinaw is the predicate, na marks a reached state, and ang tagubilin is the pivot. The particle occupies the early clitic area; the linker belongs inside a phrase.
If deleting na breaks a modifier–head connection, it is likely the linker. If it removes an “already/now” meaning, it is the particle.
Keep -ng, ng, and nang distinct
Humingi ang guro ng bagong kopya at nagsalita nang marahan.
The teacher requested a new copy and spoke gently.
Bago + -ng is the linker, separate ng marks the requested noun phrase, and nang introduces manner. Their similar spelling does not make them variants.
See choosing ng versus nang for the two free words.
Loans, register, and lexicalized forms
Borrowed words integrated into Filipino syntax normally follow their actual final sound: praktikal na paraan, berdeng pinto. Productive linking is stable in conversation and formal writing.
Some compounds and fixed expressions have lexicalized spellings or meanings. Learn those as whole items instead of silently rebuilding them. Rapid conversation may reduce separate na, but careful writing retains the standard allomorph.
Praktikal na solusyon ang iminungkahi ng inhinyero.
The engineer proposed a practical solution.
Short exchange
—Aling kahon ang dadalhin natin? —Iyong maliit na kahong may pulang tanda. —Ito bang nasa tabi ng bagong kabinet? —Oo, iyan nga.
—Which box will we bring? —The small box with a red mark. —This one beside the new cabinet? —Yes, that one.
The exchange naturally uses maliit na, kahong, and bagong. Reference and definiteness come from demonstratives and discourse, not from the linker allomorph.
Common Mistakes
Using na after a vowel-final word
❌ Maganda na tanawin ang makikita mula sa burol.
Incorrect for the modifier meaning—vowel-final maganda takes attached -ng.
✅ Magandang tanawin ang makikita mula sa burol.
A beautiful view can be seen from the hill.
The incorrect version may be parsed as phase particle na in another context, but it does not form the intended compact noun phrase.
Attaching -ng after most consonants
❌ Tahimikng lugar ang kailangan para sa panayam.
Incorrect—consonant-final tahimik takes separate na.
✅ Tahimik na lugar ang kailangan para sa panayam.
A quiet place is needed for the interview.
Forgetting the special form after n
❌ Huwaran na kawani si Elisa sa kanilang tanggapan.
Incorrect productive linker form—final n takes attached -g.
✅ Huwarang kawani si Elisa sa kanilang tanggapan.
Elisa is an exemplary employee in their office.
Looking at the following word instead of the preceding one
❌ Maliitng mesa ang kasya sa sulok.
Incorrect—the initial vowel of mesa is irrelevant; final t in maliit requires na.
✅ Maliit na mesa ang kasya sa sulok.
A small table fits in the corner.
Using nang as a universal linker
❌ Matibay nang lubid ang dalhin mo sa pag-akyat.
Incorrect for 'a strong rope'—nang is not the ordinary linker after matibay.
✅ Matibay na lubid ang dalhin mo sa pag-akyat.
Bring a strong rope for the climb.
Key Takeaways
- Vowel → attached -ng; final n → attached -g; other consonant → separate na.
- The immediately preceding complete element controls the choice.
- Word order can change the allomorph because it changes what precedes the boundary.
- Linker na and phase particle na are different grammatical items.
- Do not confuse attached -ng with phrase marker ng or adverbial/clause-linking nang.
