The prefix mis- marks an action, judgment, form, or result as wrong, mistaken, improper, or badly directed. If someone miskomprenas, they do understand something—but understand it incorrectly. If they miskalkulas, they perform a calculation and get it wrong. The prefix therefore changes the quality or correctness of the base event; it does not simply negate it.
This is close to English mis- in misunderstand and miscalculate, but the match is not automatic. English words beginning with mis- may have their own Esperanto equivalents, while an English word without the prefix may still call for mis- when “doing it wrongly” is the central meaning.
Wrong Performance, Not Mere Absence
The element after mis- is the semantic head. Miskompreni is a kind of understanding, misskribi is a kind of writing, and misinformi is a kind of informing. The prefix evaluates how that action relates to the intended or correct result.
| Base | With mis- | Contrast |
|---|---|---|
| kompreni — understand | miskompreni — misunderstand | an interpretation was formed, but it was wrong |
| kalkuli — calculate | miskalkuli — miscalculate | the calculation was performed incorrectly |
| skribi — write | misskribi — write incorrectly | the written form contains an error |
| direkti — direct | misdirekti — misdirect | the direction or recipient is wrong |
Mi komprenis la instrukcion, sed mia kolego miskomprenis la lastan paŝon.
I understood the instruction, but my colleague misunderstood the last step.
Mi tute ne komprenis la demandon.
I did not understand the question at all.
Mi miskomprenis la demandon kaj komencis paroli pri alia temo.
I misunderstood the question and started talking about another topic.
The last two examples are not synonyms. Ne kompreni reports no successful understanding; miskompreni reports a definite but incorrect interpretation. That difference is one of the most useful reasons to learn the prefix.
Ĉu mi miskalkulis, aŭ ĉu la prezo vere altiĝis je dudek procentoj?
Did I miscalculate, or did the price really rise by twenty percent?
La sistemo misdirektis nian mesaĝon al la malĝusta fako.
The system misdirected our message to the wrong department.
The Error May Be Accidental Or Deliberate
Mis- describes what is wrong about the action or its result. It does not itself say whether the agent made an innocent mistake. Miskalkuli is normally accidental, but misuzi “misuse/abuse” can describe deliberate exploitation, and mistrakti “mistreat” often describes knowing bad treatment.
Mi mispremis la buton kaj forigis la tutan alineon.
I pressed the wrong button and deleted the whole paragraph.
La administranto misuzis sian postenon por helpi siajn amikojn.
The administrator abused his position to help his friends.
Neniu besto devas esti mistraktata tiel.
No animal should be mistreated like that.
Context supplies intention. If intention matters, state it: akcidente, pro nezorgemo, intence, or a fuller clause.
Li ne eraris akcidente; li intence misinformis la klientojn.
He did not make an accidental mistake; he deliberately misinformed the customers.
This avoids a common false rule that mis- always means an innocent slip. It can mark incorrect execution, inappropriate use, or harmful treatment regardless of motive.
Verbs, Nouns, And Adjectives From The Same Root
Although mis- often appears with a verb, the completed stem can take the ordinary Esperanto endings. Misfaro is a wrongful act, misformo is an incorrect or defective form, and misa means erroneous, faulty, or wrong. The category comes from the final ending, while mis- supplies the error meaning.
La raporto enhavas plurajn misojn, sed neniu el ili ŝanĝas la ĉefan konkludon.
The report contains several errors, but none of them changes the main conclusion.
Pro misa adreso la pakaĵo revenis al la sendinto.
Because of an incorrect address, the package returned to the sender.
— Kial mia nomo ne aperas? — Mi verŝajne misskribis ĝin en la listo.
— Why does my name not appear? — I probably misspelled it on the list.
The independent verb misi means “be wrong, err, miss the mark” in suitable contexts, but it is not a universal replacement for every English verb miss. In ordinary usage, missing a train is conventionally maltrafi trajnon; missing a friend can be sopiri al amiko; noticing that something is absent can use manki. English spelling is not a safe guide to Esperanto morphology.
Ni maltrafis la lastan trajnon pro la longa vico.
We missed the last train because of the long line.
Mis- Versus Mal-
Mal- creates an opposite; mis- says that the original kind of action or assessment is wrongly performed. The classical contrast with laŭdi “praise” makes the logic unusually clear:
- mallaŭdi: criticize, say something unfavorable—the opposite of praising;
- mislaŭdi: praise wrongly, for example praising someone who did not deserve it;
- mismallaŭdi: criticize wrongly.
La recenzisto mallaŭdis la filmon pro ĝia malforta fino.
The reviewer criticized the film because of its weak ending.
Mi mislaŭdis lin pro la raporto; poste mi eksciis, ke Ana verkis ĝin.
I wrongly praised him for the report; later I learned that Ana wrote it.
Ne mismallaŭdu la teknikiston: la paneo ne estis ŝia kulpo.
Do not wrongly criticize the technician: the breakdown was not her fault.
Similarly, malkompreni should not be invented to mean “misunderstand.” Mal- would ask for an opposite of understanding, while the intended idea is an erroneous understanding, already expressed by miskompreni. See mal- for the opposite-forming prefix.
Mis- Versus Erare And Fuŝ-
A phrase with erare “mistakenly” can often express the same event as mis-, but it packages the information differently. Mi erare sendis la dosieron foregrounds the mistake as an adverbial circumstance. Mi missendis la dosieron presents the sending itself as misdirected or incorrect.
Mi erare sendis al vi la malnovan version de la kontrakto.
I mistakenly sent you the old version of the contract.
Mi missendis la fakturon al alia kliento.
I sent the invoice to the wrong client.
The root fuŝ- adds the stronger idea of botching something through incompetence, haste, or careless workmanship. Fuŝtraduki suggests a shoddy translation; mistraduki neutrally says that something was translated incorrectly. This is a usage distinction, not a perfectly sharp logical boundary.
La aŭtomata ilo mistradukis unu terminon, sed la resto estas ĝusta.
The automatic tool mistranslated one term, but the rest is correct.
La nekompetenta entrepreno fuŝriparis la tegmenton, kaj ĝi denove likas.
The incompetent company botched the roof repair, and it is leaking again.
Productivity, Convention, And Scope
Mis- is productive, so a new formation such as misetikedi “label incorrectly” is readily interpretable when the context supports it. Yet not every English word should be rebuilt prefix by prefix. Prefer an established Esperanto verb when one exists: “miss the bus” is maltrafi la buson, not misi la buson.
La magazeno misetikedis du skatolojn, do ni malfermis la malĝustan.
The warehouse mislabeled two boxes, so we opened the wrong one.
In a stack, scope still matters. Remiskalkuli naturally means “calculate wrongly again”: re- applies to miskalkuli. Misrekalkuli means to perform a recalculation incorrectly: mis- evaluates the completed idea rekalkuli. The contrast is possible, but in real communication a phrase may be clearer.
Mi remiskalkulis la sumon, do ĉi-foje mi kontrolos ĝin per kalkulilo.
I miscalculated the total again, so this time I will check it with a calculator.
This is the same compositional principle covered under affix stacking and scope: the closest elements form a meaningful unit first. Productivity gives you options, not permission to ignore processing difficulty.
Common Mistakes
Using Mal- For A Mistaken Action
❌ Mi malkomprenis vian ŝercon.
Incorrect for ‘misunderstood’ — mal- forms opposites, while the intended meaning is incorrect understanding.
✅ Mi miskomprenis vian ŝercon.
I misunderstood your joke.
Treating Mis- As Necessarily Accidental
❌ Li intence prenis la monon, do ni ne povas diri, ke li misuzis sian postenon.
Incorrect — mis- can describe intentional abuse as well as accidental error.
✅ Li intence misuzis sian postenon por preni la monon.
He deliberately abused his position to take the money.
Translating Every English “Miss” With Mis-
❌ Mi misas mian amikon ekde kiam li transloĝiĝis.
Incorrect for ‘I miss my friend’ — misi does not express emotional longing.
✅ Mi sopiras al mia amiko ekde kiam li transloĝiĝis.
I have missed my friend since he moved away.
Writing The Prefix As A Separate Word
❌ Mi mis skribis vian familian nomon.
Incorrect — productive mis- is attached directly to its base.
✅ Mi misskribis vian familian nomon.
I misspelled your family name.
Key Takeaways
- Mis- means that the base action, judgment, use, or result is wrong or improperly executed.
- It differs from ne, which denies an event, and mal-, which forms an opposite.
- Mis- does not itself specify whether the error was accidental or deliberate.
- The prefix is productive across verbs, nouns, and adjectives, but established usage still determines which coinages sound natural.
- In multi-affix words, order expresses scope: remiskalkuli and misrekalkuli need not mean the same thing.
