Aŭskulti: To Listen

Aŭskulti is the regular transitive verb “to listen.” Unlike English, Esperanto does not put “to” before the person, sound, or program receiving attention: one says aŭskulti muzikon, aŭskulti la instruiston, and aŭskulti podkaston. The accusative ending identifies the focus of deliberate hearing.

FormFunctionTypical translation
aŭskultiinfinitiveto listen
aŭskultaspresent indicativelisten(s), is listening
aŭskultispast indicativelistened
aŭskultosfuture indicativewill listen
aŭskultusconditionalwould listen
aŭskultuvolitivelisten!, let ... listen

The stem aŭskult- does not change, and the verb has no person or number agreement: mi aŭskultas, ŝi aŭskultas, ili aŭskultas. Aŭskultus presents hypothetical listening, while aŭskultu requests or urges attention.

Mi aŭskultas novaĵan podkaston dum mi preparas matenmanĝon.

I listen to a news podcast while I prepare breakfast.

Ĉu vi aŭskultus la registradon kaj dirus al mi, kie la sono interrompiĝas?

Would you listen to the recording and tell me where the sound cuts out?

Aŭskultu la tutan demandon antaŭ ol vi respondos.

Listen to the whole question before you answer.

The listener's focus is a direct object

The object may be a sound, a performance, a recording, a speaker, or the speaker's words. It takes -n without a preposition.

La pasaĝeroj silente aŭskultis la anoncon pri la prokrastita trajno.

The passengers silently listened to the announcement about the delayed train.

Bonvolu aŭskulti ŝin ĝis la fino, eĉ se vi malkonsentas.

Please listen to her to the end, even if you disagree.

In the second example, ŝin means the person whose speech receives attention. Esperanto does not copy English listen to her as aŭskulti al ŝi. The same direct frame applies to devices and media: aŭskulti la radion, aŭskulti albumon, aŭskulti voĉmesaĝon.

— Kion vi aŭskultas? — Intervjuon kun klimata esploristo.

— What are you listening to? — An interview with a climate researcher.

The answer can omit the repeated verb, but intervjuon retains the case it would have in the full answer Mi aŭskultas intervjuon.

💡
English makes the target of “listen” prepositional; Esperanto makes it a direct object. Replace “to” with accusative -n, not with al.

Aŭskulti versus aŭdi

Aŭdi means hear or perceive a sound; aŭskulti means direct auditory attention toward it. Hearing can happen accidentally, while listening is intentional.

Mi aŭdis bruon en la koridoro kaj haltis por aŭskulti.

I heard a noise in the corridor and stopped to listen.

Mi aŭskultis la prelegon, sed pro la malbona laŭtparolilo mi ne aŭdis ĉiun vorton.

I listened to the lecture, but because of the bad loudspeaker I didn't hear every word.

This distinction is one of meaning, not aspect. Mi aŭskultis does not guarantee successful perception of every detail; mi aŭdis reports that a sound reached awareness. An accidental fact normally uses aŭdi, ke...:

Mi aŭdis, ke la koncerto estis nuligita, sed mi ne scias kial.

I heard that the concert was canceled, but I don't know why.

Do not replace that reporting sense with aŭskulti, ke.... A clause after aŭskulti is natural when it is an indirect question describing what the listener is trying to detect:

Ni silentis por aŭskulti, ĉu iu ankoraŭ moviĝas en la apuda ĉambro.

We fell silent to listen for whether anyone was still moving in the next room.

Listening to people, advice, and instructions

With a person as object, aŭskulti can extend from hearing their words to paying attention to or heeding them. Context decides whether actual compliance follows.

Mi devintus aŭskulti vin, kiam vi avertis min pri la glacia vojo.

I should have listened to you when you warned me about the icy road.

La infanoj ne aŭskultis la instrukciojn kaj malfermis la skatolon tro frue.

The children didn't listen to the instructions and opened the box too early.

Aŭskulti konsilon may imply taking advice seriously, but obei is stronger: it means obey or comply. Someone can listen attentively and still decide not to follow the recommendation.

Complements around the object

Other phrases describe circumstances rather than replace the object. Per can name the device, kun company, and a place phrase the listening location.

Mi aŭskultis la matĉon per malnova radio dum la elektropaneo.

I listened to the match on an old radio during the power outage.

Ŝi aŭskultas muzikon per aŭdiloj, por ne ĝeni la aliajn pasaĝerojn.

She listens to music through headphones so as not to disturb the other passengers.

English “listen for” has no single automatic preposition. Express the intended event: aŭskulti, ĉu la bebo ploras, atendi la sonorilon aŭskultante, or streĉe aŭskulti por aŭdi paŝojn.

Participles and passive voice

Because aŭskulti is transitive, it has both active and passive participles.

La plej aŭskultata epizodo de la serio temas pri dormo kaj memoro.

The most listened-to episode in the series is about sleep and memory.

Aŭskultinte la mesaĝon dufoje, mi rimarkis nomon, kiun mi antaŭe preteratentis.

Having listened to the message twice, I noticed a name that I had missed before.

Aŭskultata commonly presents ongoing or repeated reception; aŭskultita presents a completed listening event. Aŭskultota is regular but naturally rarer because speakers seldom need to describe an item specifically as awaiting future listening.

Productive family members

  • reaŭskulti — listen again;
  • subaŭskulti — listen secretly, eavesdrop;
  • aŭskultado — the activity of listening;
  • aŭskultanto — listener;
  • aŭskultilo — listening device or receiver, depending on context.

Mi reaŭskultis la lastajn du minutojn por kontroli la precizan citaĵon.

I listened to the last two minutes again to check the exact quotation.

Li staris malantaŭ la pordo kaj subaŭskultis la privatan interparolon.

He stood behind the door and eavesdropped on the private conversation.

Subaŭskulti is an established but less frequent word with a negative implication; the transparent kaŝe aŭskulti is also clear. Reaŭskulti is a straightforward productive use of re-.

Frequency, register, and status

Aŭskulti is frequent and neutral in conversation, education, broadcasting, and (formal) contexts. The root is Fundamental, as are the accusative and regular verb endings. That foundational norm supports aŭskulti ion/iun directly. Accepted variation concerns word order and choices such as subaŭskulti versus kaŝe aŭskulti, not the core object frame. The pedagogical recommendation is to avoid al after aŭskulti. Tekstaro usage widely attests direct objects ranging from people and sermons to interviews and broadcasts.

See Direct Objects for how accusative marking preserves roles under freer word order.

💡
Ask whether sound merely reached awareness (aŭdi) or whether someone deliberately directed attention toward it (aŭskulti).

Common Mistakes

Copying English “listen to” with al

❌ Mi aŭskultas al la radio dum mi veturas.

Incorrect — the medium receiving attention is a direct object.

✅ Mi aŭskultas la radion dum mi veturas.

I listen to the radio while I drive.

Omitting accusative on the object

❌ Bonvolu aŭskulti tiu mallonga mesaĝo.

Incorrect — the message is the direct object, and tiu must agree with it.

✅ Bonvolu aŭskulti tiun mallongan mesaĝon.

Please listen to that short message.

Using intentional listening for accidental hearing

❌ Mi aŭskultis subitan krakon malantaŭ mi.

Incorrect for an unexpected sound that simply reached awareness.

✅ Mi aŭdis subitan krakon malantaŭ mi.

I heard a sudden crack behind me.

Using aŭskulti, ke... for reported information

❌ Mi aŭskultis, ke la flugo estas prokrastita.

Incorrect — learning a reported fact through hearing requires aŭdi.

✅ Mi aŭdis, ke la flugo estas prokrastita.

I heard that the flight is delayed.

Key Takeaways

  • Aŭskulti is fully regular and takes the focus of listening as a direct object.
  • Use aŭdi for sound perception and aŭskulti for deliberate auditory attention.
  • People, programs, recordings, and advice all follow the same object pattern without al.
  • Reaŭskulti and subaŭskulti add conventional repeat and secret-listening meanings.
