The Akademio de Esperanto helps preserve the foundational standard and studies questions that arise as the language develops. Its publications do not all have the same status. An Official Addition, a formal decision, a section report, a recommendation, a consultation answer, and one member's article provide different kinds of evidence. Careful writers identify which kind they are citing.
This hierarchy presupposes the distinction between an immutable base and a developing community, explained in the Fundamento and the living language.
The Fundamento remains primary
The Akademio did not create the Fundamento and cannot treat it as an ordinary draft to rewrite. The institution uses it as its principal working basis. Therefore an Akademio recommendation should be interpreted within the foundational system, not as a replacement for it.
La Akademio klarigas la normon surbaze de la Fundamento; ĝi ne verkas novan gramatikon de nulo.
The Akademio explains the norm on the basis of the Fundamento; it does not write a new grammar from scratch.
The practical consequence is a hierarchy. If a later explanation seems to contradict the Fundamento, check the exact source, wording, and scope before announcing a reform.
Ĉu la dokumento vere ŝanĝas regulon, aŭ ĉu ĝi nur rekomendas unu elekton inter du eblaj formoj?
Does the document really change a rule, or does it merely recommend one choice between two possible forms?
That question prevents a common category error: pedagogical preference is not necessarily a ban.
Official Additions: official, not retroactively Fundamental
The original Universala Vortaro is part of the Fundamento. Beginning in 1909, the Lingva Komitato and later the Akademio issued Official Additions that incorporated mature vocabulary into the official lexicon. The ninth appeared in 2007, and the tenth was approved in 2023.
La radiko estis oficialigita en posta Oficiala Aldono; ĝi do estas oficiala, sed ne aperas en la origina Fundamento.
The root was made official in a later Official Addition; it is therefore official, but does not occur in the original Fundamento.
“Fundamental” and “official” are technical status labels here. The distinction preserves history; it does not rank every Fundamental word as stylistically better than every later official word.
Oficiala statuso ne faras la vorton malnova, kaj Fundamenta statuso ne garantias, ke ĝi estas ofta en moderna konversacio.
Official status does not make the word old, and Fundamental status does not guarantee that it is frequent in modern conversation.
Officialization generally recognizes language that has already matured in usage. It is not the moment at which speakers first receive permission to understand or use a root.
La termino jam aperis en multaj fakaj tekstoj antaŭ ol ĝi ricevis oficialan statuson.
The term had already appeared in many specialist texts before it received official status.
The Akademia Vortaro and its labels
The Akademia Vortaro combines the original Universala Vortaro with later official additions and authorized corrections to translations. Its status markers distinguish F (Fundamental) from the numbered Official Additions and other documented actions. It is an authority for official lexical status, not a complete dictionary of everything acceptable in the living language.
Mi kontrolis la Akademian Vortaron por ekscii, ĉu la radiko estas Fundamenta, oficiala aŭ ankoraŭ neoficiala.
I checked the Akademia Vortaro to learn whether the root is Fundamental, official, or still unofficial.
Absence can mean “not Fundamental or official,” but it does not by itself prove malformed, unintelligible, rare, or wrong. Compounds and transparent derivatives need not each receive separate entries.
Mi ne trovis la tutan kunmetaĵon en la vortaro, sed ĝiaj partoj kaj ĝia strukturo estas klaraj.
I did not find the whole compound in the dictionary, but its parts and structure are clear.
For meaning, collocation, register, and current frequency, consult broader dictionaries, grammar, and corpus evidence as well.
Decisions, recommendations, and reports
The Akademio has issued formal decisions on particular grammatical and lexical questions. It also publishes reports or recommendations that may say one analysis is preferable for teaching while acknowledging another as defensible. Quoting only the preferred form and suppressing the acknowledged alternative misrepresents the document.
| Source type | Best use | Caution |
|---|---|---|
| formal decision | state the adopted institutional position | read its date and exact scope |
| Official Addition | establish official lexical status | does not prove everyday frequency |
| section report/recommendation | guide analysis or pedagogy | may explicitly allow alternatives |
| Konsultejo answer | obtain reasoned advice on a concrete question | do not silently elevate it into a new foundational rule |
| individual member's work | learn an expert argument | membership alone does not make it an Akademio decision |
La raporto rekomendas la adverban formon por lernolibroj, sed ĝi nomas ambaŭ analizojn pravigeblaj.
The report recommends the adverbial form for textbooks, but it calls both analyses defensible.
This kind of wording matters. A course may teach the recommended form first without branding the documented alternative ungrammatical.
En nia kurso ni sekvas la rekomenditan formon, ĉar ĝi montras la ĝeneralan regulon pli klare.
In our course we follow the recommended form because it shows the general rule more clearly.
That is a pedagogical rationale, not an accusation against all other speakers.
The Konsultejo advises on concrete questions
The Akademio's Konsultejo publishes answers that reason from foundational text, official decisions, dictionaries, and actual usage. These answers are valuable because they often state distinctions that a yes/no label would hide.
— Ĉu la formo estas kontraŭ-Fundamenta? — Ne nepre; sed la Konsultejo rekomendas pli klaran alternativon.
— Is the form contrary to the Fundamento? — Not necessarily; but the consultation service recommends a clearer alternative.
The two clauses answer different questions: compatibility and advisability. A responsible summary preserves both.
La respondo konstatas, ke la efektiva lingvouzo ankoraŭ ne estas stabila.
The answer observes that actual usage is not yet stable.
Such a conclusion is evidence of uncertainty, not institutional failure. A living language sometimes reaches no settled result yet.
How to report Akademio guidance accurately
Use a reproducible citation practice even in nonacademic discussion:
- Name the issuing body or section.
- Give the document title and date.
- Quote or paraphrase the operative wording accurately.
- State whether it is a decision, official addition, recommendation, or answer.
- Separate the document's claim from your own teaching choice.
La dokumento ne diras «malpermesite»; ĝi diras «malrekomendinde». Mi do ne nomos la formon kontraŭgramatika.
The document does not say ‘prohibited’; it says ‘not recommended.’ I therefore will not call the form ungrammatical.
Translations can distort modal force. If an English summary says must, inspect whether the Esperanto original says devas, oni uzu, estas rekomendinde, or merely estas preferinde.
Dates also matter. A later document may confirm, refine, or supersede an earlier institutional position, while an old consultation answer may simply reflect the evidence then available. Search for subsequent formal work before treating the first document you find as current guidance. Scope matters just as much: a recommendation about school terminology does not automatically govern literary style, and an answer about one compound does not necessarily prohibit every structurally similar compound. State the narrow rule first; only generalize when the source itself gives a general principle.
Finally, preserve named uncertainty. If a report presents two analyses and recommends one for teaching, write exactly that. Reducing the conclusion to “the Akademio says only X is correct” changes an advisory preference into a prohibition. For learners, an honest formulation can still be decisive: teach X as the default, recognize Y when reading, and explain the context in which the choice matters.
Authority and actual distribution
Formal status and community distribution complement each other. An official form may remain specialist or rare. A nonofficial form may be widespread and regular. The Akademio itself considers usage when evaluating mature vocabulary; corpus evidence therefore informs institutional work without replacing it.
La oficiala formo estas taŭga, sed la korpuso montras, ke verkistoj ofte elektas pli mallongan alternativon.
The official form is suitable, but the corpus shows that writers often choose a shorter alternative.
Do not invent geographic hierarchies from such differences. A choice may correlate with age, genre, professional field, publication policy, or first-language influence rather than a national Esperanto dialect.
La du formoj aperas ĉe aŭtoroj el pluraj landoj; la diferenco ŝajnas ĉefe historia kaj ĝenra.
The two forms occur in authors from several countries; the difference appears mainly historical and genre-based.
Common Mistakes
Calling every Akademio text a binding decision
❌ Akademiano skribis tion en artikolo, do la Akademio oficiale decidis ĝin.
Incorrect — an individual's article is not automatically an institutional decision.
✅ Akademiano proponis tiun analizon; mi serĉos apartan oficialan decidon.
An Akademio member proposed that analysis; I will look for a separate official decision.
Confusing official and Fundamental status
❌ La radiko estas oficiala, do ĝi troviĝis en la Fundamento de 1905.
Incorrect — it may have entered through a later Official Addition.
✅ La radiko estas oficiala pro posta Aldono, sed ĝi ne estas Fundamenta.
The root is official through a later Addition, but it is not Fundamental.
Treating absence from the Akademia Vortaro as prohibition
❌ La kunmetaĵo ne havas propran artikolon, do oni ne rajtas uzi ĝin.
Incorrect — transparent compounds need not be separately officialized.
✅ Ni kontrolu ĝian formadon, signifon kaj realan uzon, ne nur apartan vortaran artikolon.
Let us check its formation, meaning, and actual use, not only a separate dictionary entry.
Erasing a recommendation's qualification
❌ La Akademio rekomendis unu formon por lernolibroj, do ĝi deklaris la alian erara ĉie.
Incorrect — a pedagogical recommendation may explicitly accept the alternative.
✅ La rekomendita formo estas plej klara por komencantoj; la alia restas dokumentita alternativo.
The recommended form is clearest for beginners; the other remains a documented alternative.
Key Takeaways
Read Akademio guidance by document type and exact wording. The Fundamento remains the primary baseline; Official Additions create later official status without rewriting history. The Akademia Vortaro tracks that status, while recommendations and consultation answers supply reasoned guidance whose qualifications must be preserved. Combine authority with evidence of actual usage rather than forcing either to answer every question alone.
