Super places something higher than a reference point, normally more or less above it and with space between them. Its central contrast is with sur, which highlights contact with a surface. From physical height, super extends to rank, power, value, and coverage—the higher thing may dominate, exceed, or spread over what lies below.
Higher than, normally without contact
In a static scene, super identifies the lower reference object but does not normally imply contact:
Super la manĝotablo pendas tri simplaj lampoj.
Three simple lamps hang above the dining table.
Nigraj nuboj amasiĝis super la urbo antaŭ la ŝtormo.
Dark clouds gathered over the city before the storm.
— Kie estas la rezerva ŝlosilo? — En la malgranda ŝranketo super la lavujo.
— Where is the spare key? — In the small cabinet above the sink.
The complement stays without -n because these are positions: super la tablo, super la urbo, super la lavujo.
Super versus sur
The difference is contact, not simply English “above” versus “on”:
La afiŝo pendas sur la muro, kaj lampo pendas super ĝi.
The poster hangs on the wall, and a lamp hangs above it.
The poster is attached to the wall's surface, so it is sur la muro. The lamp occupies a higher location relative to the poster, so it is super ĝi. The Sur page develops the contact side of this contrast.
The contrast survives when both items are physically high:
La telero estas sur la supra breto; alia breto troviĝas super ĝi.
The plate is on the upper shelf; another shelf is located above it.
Occasionally super is used where slight contact exists but the speaker ignores it, or where something spreads as a covering. A blanket pulled super sin covers the person and necessarily touches them. If the contact or support is the central fact, however, sur is clearer: la libro kuŝas sur la litkovrilo.
Position above versus movement to above
Plain super + noun can accompany a motion verb when the movement takes place in the higher region:
Dum preskaŭ horo la helikoptero rondiris super la stadiono.
For almost an hour the helicopter circled above the stadium.
The helicopter is already in the airspace above the stadium. Directional -n marks a new endpoint above the reference object:
La birdo saltis de la barilo kaj flugis super la tegmenton.
The bird jumped from the fence and flew to a position above the roof.
La suno leviĝis super la montojn kaj lumigis la valon.
The sun rose above the mountains and lit the valley.
The accusative does not mean “because the verb involves motion.” It means al loko super.... Compare:
La virabelo flugas super la kampo, sed nun la piloto direktas ĝin super la arbaron.
The drone is flying above the field, but now the pilot is directing it to a position above the forest.
The first phrase describes the drone's current flight area; the second gives its new destination.
Super is not automatically “across”
English over can describe either height or crossing. Esperanto separates them. Super la rivero means higher than the river; super la riveron means movement into a position above it. Neither form by itself guarantees arrival on the far bank. Trans la riveron explicitly means to/across to the other side.
The plane flew above the river while the train traveled across the river on the bridge.
Use super when the elevated path is relevant; use trans when the far-side result is relevant. One event can satisfy both descriptions, but the preposition selects a different feature.
Neither a bare accusative nor vague je replaces this established spatial relation. Say super la urbo or directional super la urbon, according to meaning; je la urbo does not mean “above the city.”
Covering and spread
Super can present one thing as extending over another, even where contact is possible:
Ŝi tiris la litkovrilon super la ŝultrojn kaj tuj endormiĝis.
She pulled the blanket over her shoulders and immediately fell asleep.
A thin layer of dust lay over the old files.
Here the covering relation outranks the usual expectation of a gap. The same logic appears in supervesto, an outer garment worn over other clothes. Contrast subvesto, worn beneath another layer.
Directional -n in super la ŝultrojn marks the blanket's newly reached covering position. Static La litkovrilo kuŝis super ŝiaj kruroj describes the resulting arrangement.
Rank, power, and superiority
Vertical height provides a familiar model for hierarchy:
La konstitucio staras super ordinara leĝo en la jura hierarkio.
The constitution stands above an ordinary law in the legal hierarchy.
No one should be above the rules, not even the director.
The court has no authority over foreign companies in that matter.
These uses express higher rank or power. They are not simple comparisons with pli.
Super also locates measurements above a reference point:
La temperaturo restos super nulo dum la tuta nokto.
The temperature will remain above zero throughout the night.
For a bare quantity meaning “more than,” pli ol is generally clearer: pli ol cent homoj. Concise super cent occurs in numerical and technical contexts, but should not become an automatic calque of English over.
Working on a subject
Established usage permits labori super io when a person figuratively bends over a task and works to develop or improve it:
La redakta teamo laboras super la fina versio de la raporto.
The editorial team is working on the final version of the report.
This is not a general topic marker. Ni parolis pri la raporto means that the report was the topic; ni laboris super la raporto presents it as the object of sustained work. In internationally oriented prose, labori pri is also widespread and often simpler. Both are accepted, but sur la raporto is normally a physical surface reading, not “on the report” as a topic.
Super, supre, supra, and supera
These similar-looking forms are not interchangeable:
- super la pordo — above the door; super takes a complement;
- supre — above/up at the top, without that prepositional complement;
- la supra breto — the upper/top shelf in a physical arrangement;
- supera kvalito — superior quality in value or rank.
The guest rooms are upstairs, on the upper floor.
This model is superior to the previous one in battery life.
Superi means exceed or surpass: La enspezoj superis la elspezojn. The object is directly accusative, not introduced by super. Malsupera and malsuperi express lower rank or value, but spatial “below” is sub, not the nonexistent preposition malsuper.
Compounds and lexicalized extensions
Productive super- compounds include superhoma, supernacia, superregi, and superflua. Their relationship may be “above in degree,” “above in institutional level,” or historically lexicalized. Superflua, for example, means unnecessary or surplus, not physically floating above something.
Because compounds can develop conventional meanings, an ordinary phrase is safer when literal geometry matters: ponto super la rivero, not a newly invented compound. For the far side or crossing, use trans- words such as transiri.
Norm and register
The gap-centered contrast super versus contact-centered sur, and the position/destination contrast without or with -n, belong to the foundational norm. Covering and figurative power are also established. The task sense labori super is attested and standard, though labori pri is a common clarity-oriented alternative.
Abstract hierarchy is frequent in (formal) and (academic) prose. Everyday spatial uses require no special register label. Older literary uses of time “passing over someone's head” are understandable but (literary); modern neutral prose usually states the elapsed years directly.
Common Mistakes
Using super where contact is central
❌ Mi lasis la telefonon super la tablo.
Incorrect for the intended resting position — the phone is supported by the tabletop.
✅ Mi lasis la telefonon sur la tablo.
I left the phone on the table.
Adding -n to a static higher position
❌ La lampo pendas super la tablon.
Incorrect — the lamp is already hanging above the table.
✅ La lampo pendas super la tablo.
The lamp hangs above the table.
Confusing the preposition with the adverb
Incorrect — supre is an adverb and cannot take la butiko as its complement.
The apartment above the shop is brighter; the office is upstairs.
Using super for a far-side destination
Wrong relation — super highlights a position above, not crossing to the far side.
We swam across the wide river to reach the opposite bank.
Key Takeaways
- Super normally marks higher position without significant contact; sur foregrounds contact.
- Plain super marks position or motion in the upper region; super + -n marks movement into it.
- Trans + -n, not super + -n, explicitly profiles crossing to a far side.
- Power, rank, excess over a reference point, and coverage extend the vertical core.
- Keep super, supre, supra, supera, and superi grammatically distinct.
