Kontraŭ

The core image of kontraŭ is inverse direction: two fronts face each other, a force meets resistance, or one position stands opposed to another. From that image come physical facing, impact, disagreement, defense, hostile feeling, and exchange. English distributes these meanings among “against,” “opposite,” “toward,” “for,” and “in exchange for.”

Facing position

In a static scene, kontraŭ can mean “opposite” or “facing”:

La akceptejo estas kontraŭ la ĉefa enirejo.

The reception desk is opposite the main entrance.

We sat facing each other and calmly discussed the problem.

The complement has no -n because the sentence describes an established position. Kontraŭ differs from antaŭ: something can stand in front of a building without facing it, while kontraŭ la enirejo presents orientation toward the entrance.

💡
Picture two arrows pointing toward each other. Physical kontraŭ identifies the opposed direction; abstract kontraŭ preserves the same idea as resistance or disagreement.

Direction, turning, and contact

Directional -n can appear when something turns toward or moves into impact with the reference object:

Ŝi turnis la seĝon kontraŭ la fenestron por vidi la ĝardenon.

She turned the chair to face the window so she could see the garden.

The ball flew into the wall and bounced back into the street.

In both, the endpoint or new orientation matters. Compare a continuing relation without endpoint marking:

Dum la ŝtormo ni devis marŝi kontraŭ la vento.

During the storm we had to walk against the wind.

The walking continually opposes the wind; the walkers do not arrive at “the wind” as a destination. Likewise, froti alumeton kontraŭ la muro presents contact during rubbing and normally needs no directional -n.

The cabinet stands against the wall, but it is not attached to it.

Here contact or supporting position is static. A motion verb alone never licenses -n automatically; the meaning must involve a new direction or attained impact. See Prepositions with Optional Directional -n.

Opposition and disagreement

The most common abstract use marks a person, proposal, rule, or principle opposed by someone:

Plimulto de la komitato voĉdonis kontraŭ la propono.

A majority of the committee voted against the proposal.

I will not act against my conscience merely to avoid criticism.

— Are you for or against the new plan? — I am against it in its current form.

In this political or evaluative contrast, por supports and kontraŭ opposes. No accusative appears: a position kontraŭ la propono is not movement into the proposal.

Verbs and nouns can select the same relation: protesti kontraŭ, batali kontraŭ, argumento kontraŭ, riproĉo kontraŭ. Do not replace these established frames with vague je.

Hostility, emotion, and conduct toward someone

Kontraŭ can mark the target of an unfavorable attitude or action:

Ŝi ankoraŭ sentas koleron kontraŭ la firmao pro la maljusta maldungo.

She still feels anger toward the company because of the unfair dismissal.

La trejnisto kondutis malrespekte kontraŭ la arbitraciisto.

The coach behaved disrespectfully toward the referee.

Neutral or favorable conduct is more often directed with al or expressed another way. Kontraŭ is natural when resistance, negative orientation, or reciprocal facing remains part of the meaning.

The construction unu kontraŭ alia can be hostile or simply reciprocal depending on the verb: batali unu kontraŭ alia is opposition; stari unu kontraŭ alia is physical facing.

Protection and remedies

The opposed force may be a danger rather than an enemy:

Ĉi tiu vakcino protektas kontraŭ pluraj variantoj de la viruso.

This vaccine protects against several variants of the virus.

Take a raincoat to protect yourself from the wind and rain.

La apotekisto rekomendis mildan kremon kontraŭ la jukado.

The pharmacist recommended a mild cream for the itching.

The remedy and the problem point in opposing directions: the remedy works to prevent or remove the problem. English often says “for a headache,” but Esperanto rimedo kontraŭ kapdoloro makes the adversarial relation explicit. De marks source or separation; it does not by itself express active protection.

Exchange and price

In an exchange, each item stands on the other side of the transaction:

La banko ŝanĝis cent eŭrojn kontraŭ la egalvaloro en kronoj.

The bank exchanged one hundred euros for the equivalent amount in kronor.

Mi donus mian malnovan fotilon kontraŭ tiu uzita objektivo.

I would give my old camera in exchange for that used lens.

With ŝanĝi, kontraŭ marks what is received in place of the first item. In ordinary sales, por is often more idiomatic for price: Mi aĉetis ĝin por dudek eŭroj. Kontraŭ foregrounds the two-sided exchange rather than simply naming cost.

— Ĉu vi vendus la biciklon kontraŭ ducent eŭroj? — Ne, sed mi pripensus ducent kvindek.

— Would you sell the bicycle for two hundred euros? — No, but I would consider two hundred and fifty.

For currency rates, kontraŭ names the comparison currency:

La kurzo de la eŭro kontraŭ la dolaro denove falis ĉi-semajne.

The euro's exchange rate against the dollar fell again this week.

When the actual conversion value matters, a direct equivalence is often clearer: Hodiaŭ unu eŭro egalas al proksimume tiom da dolaroj. Do not use kontraŭ with anstataŭigi: one anstataŭigas malnovan parton per nova, because per introduces the replacement installed.

Kontraŭ versus laŭ, kun, al, and per

  • laŭ la regulo follows or conforms to the rule; kontraŭ la regulo violates or opposes it.
  • batali kun aliancano can present the ally as a companion; batali kontraŭ malamiko presents the opponent.
  • iri al iu has that person as destination; iri kontraŭ iun presents approach into confrontation and uses directional -n.
  • premi kontraŭ la muro places pressure in the wall's direction; premi per la mano names the instrument.

The team acted according to the safety plan, not against it.

These contrasts are semantic, not translations of isolated English prepositions.

Word formation

Kontraŭa means opposite or contrary; kontraŭe means in the opposite way or on the contrary; kontraŭi means oppose.

Mi atendis malfruon; kontraŭe, la trajno alvenis kvin minutojn frue.

I expected a delay; on the contrary, the train arrived five minutes early.

Prefix-like kontraŭ- is productive: kontraŭargumento, kontraŭleĝa, kontraŭdolorilo, kontraŭstari. The second element determines the exact relationship, so established compounds should be preferred to opaque inventions.

Norm and usage

Facing position, opposition, protection, impact, and exchange are foundational uses. Directional -n is standard when a new facing direction or attained contact is foregrounded; nominative is standard for position, continuing resistance, and abstract opposition. Some older hostile-motion examples use kontraŭ + -n more readily than everyday contemporary prose, which often chooses direkte al or a full verb of attack.

All central uses are neutral across registers. Elaborate reciprocal and comparison uses occur more often in (formal) or (literary) prose, but ordinary por aŭ kontraŭ, protekti kontraŭ, and ŝanĝi kontraŭ are everyday language.

💡
Use -n after kontraŭ only when the sentence presents a change toward a new facing direction or an impact endpoint. Opposition by itself never requires it.

Common Mistakes

Adding -n to abstract opposition

❌ Mi voĉdonis kontraŭ la proponon.

Incorrect — voting opposition is not directional movement.

✅ Mi voĉdonis kontraŭ la propono.

I voted against the proposal.

Using kun for an opponent

Incorrect for the intended opposition — kun can present the champion as a companion.

Our team will fight against the champion in the final.

Adding directional -n to static contact

❌ La ŝranko staras kontraŭ la muron.

Incorrect — the cabinet is already in a static position.

✅ La ŝranko staras kontraŭ la muro.

The cabinet stands against the wall.

Using kontraŭ after anstataŭigi

❌ La teknikisto anstataŭigis la malnovan baterion kontraŭ nova baterio.

Incorrect — the installed replacement is introduced with per.

The technician replaced the old battery with a new one.

Key Takeaways

  • Kontraŭ begins with inverse direction and extends to opposition, protection, hostile feeling, and exchange.
  • Static facing and abstract opposition take a complement without -n.
  • Directional -n marks turning toward or impact with an attained target.
  • Use por for a straightforward purchase price and kontraŭ when a two-sided exchange is foregrounded.
  • The clearest oppositions are laŭ/kontraŭ, kun/kontraŭ, and por/kontraŭ.
