Ĉie: The Universal Place Correlative

Ĉie means “everywhere” or “in every relevant place.” It combines universal force with the domain of location; its directional form ĉien means “to every place” or “in every direction.” All unmarked uses on this page are neutral in register.

The universal-place cell

Esperanto's table words form a closed 5×9 system. The initial ĉi- supplies universal, all-inclusive force, while the final -e selects place. This gives ĉie, “in every place.” The spelling is one word: the initial is not the separate proximity particle ĉi found in ĉi tie.

FormPlace meaning
kiewhere; in which place
tiethere; in that place
iesomewhere
ĉieeverywhere
nenienowhere

Mi serĉis la okulvitrojn ĉie, sed ili estis en mia poŝo.

I looked for the glasses everywhere, but they were in my pocket.

Kie oni povas pagi per karto? — Ĉie en la konstruaĵo.

Where can one pay by card? — Everywhere in the building.

The second example shows that universal force is normally restricted by context. Ĉie en la konstruaĵo covers every relevant place inside the building, not every place in the universe. The same contextual restriction applies when the domain is merely understood.

Position: ĉie

Use ĉie for location, distribution, or occurrence across places. It is adverb-like: it can modify a verb, a whole proposition, or an existential expression.

Post la ŝtormo rompitaj branĉoj kuŝis ĉie.

After the storm, broken branches were lying everywhere.

La nova regularo validas ĉie, kie la organizaĵo havas oficejon.

The new regulation applies everywhere the organization has an office.

In ĉie, kie ..., the relative kie defines the set of places over which ĉie ranges. A comma is appropriate when the clause adds the domain as an explanation; punctuation can change with sentence structure, but the grammatical relation remains universal place plus relative place.

Ni kontrolis la sonon en la halo, sur la balkono kaj apud la scenejo; ĉie ĝi estis klara.

We checked the sound in the hall, on the balcony, and beside the stage; it was clear everywhere.

This connected context makes the relevant place set explicit. Ĉie then gathers those locations into one universal claim.

Direction: ĉien

The -e family is exceptional among adverb-like correlatives because it can take directional -n. Ĉien does not mark a direct object; it changes static “in every place” into motion or orientation “toward every place/in every direction.”

La infanoj kuris ĉien kiam la balonoj liberiĝis.

The children ran in every direction when the balloons came loose.

La novaĵo disvastiĝis ĉien en kelkaj horoj.

The news spread everywhere within a few hours.

Compare the same verb frame with position and direction:

La polico serĉis ĉie.

The police searched everywhere.

La polico sendis teamojn ĉien.

The police sent teams in every direction.

Do not add al before ĉien. Directional -n already contributes the relation “toward.” With a preposition that supplies its own relation, use ĉie: de ĉie “from everywhere,” tra ĉie “throughout,” preskaŭ ĉie “almost everywhere.”

Mesaĝoj venis de ĉie post la intervjuo.

Messages came from everywhere after the interview.

💡
Use ĉie for where things are or happen, and ĉien for where movement is directed. The -n in ĉien is directional, never an object marker.

For the wider rule, see direction with spatial adverbs.

Ĉie versus related universal forms

The English word “every” does not select the Esperanto ending. Ask which domain is universal:

Universal domainFormExample
placesĉieĉie videbla
individualsĉiu/ĉiujĉiu vendejo
things as a totalityĉioĉio pretas
timesĉiamĉiam malfermita

Ĉiu vendejo en la kvartalo estis fermita, do ĉie regis silento.

Every shop in the neighborhood was closed, so silence prevailed everywhere.

Ĉiu vendejo distributes over individual shops and participates in the noun phrase. Ĉie instead supplies a spatial setting. Use ĉio only when the universal set consists of things or matters, not places.

Negation and scope

Ne ĉie means “not everywhere”: at least one relevant place is excluded. Nenie means “nowhere”: every relevant place is excluded. This is the same logical contrast English makes between not everywhere and nowhere, but flexible Esperanto word order makes deliberate placement of ne helpful.

La interreto ne funkcias ĉie en la hotelo.

The internet does not work everywhere in the hotel.

La interreto funkcias nenie en la hotelo.

The internet works nowhere in the hotel.

Ĉu ĉi tiu karto estas akceptata ĉie, aŭ nur en la urbocentro?

Is this card accepted everywhere, or only in the city center?

The question contrasts the full spatial domain with a restricted one. Moving ĉie nearer the phrase it scopes can prevent an unintended reading in a dense sentence.

Form and normative status

Foundational Esperanto includes ĉie, and modern usage treats it as an ordinary high-frequency place word. It takes no plural -j. It takes -n only as ĉien with directional meaning. Derived ĉiea, “found everywhere,” is grammatical but uncommon; neutral prose usually prefers trovebla ĉie or another transparent phrase.

💡
The productive system predicts ĉie, but not invented mixtures such as ĉi-kie. Learn ĉi- as the universal table-word initial and keep it distinct from separate ĉi, which marks proximity.

Common Mistakes

Confusing ĉie with ĉi tie

❌ La biletejo estas ĉie apud la enirejo.

Incorrect for ‘right here’ — ĉie means everywhere.

✅ La biletejo estas ĉi tie apud la enirejo.

The ticket office is right here beside the entrance.

Adding an impossible plural

❌ Ni vidis afiŝojn ĉiej.

Incorrect — place correlatives never take plural -j.

✅ Ni vidis afiŝojn ĉie.

We saw posters everywhere.

Using directional -n for a direct object

❌ Dum la vojaĝo ni vizitis ĉien.

Incorrect — ĉien is a destination, not a direct object meaning ‘every place.’

✅ Dum la vojaĝo ni vizitis ĉiujn planitajn lokojn.

During the trip we visited every planned place.

Doubling the direction marker

❌ La vojoj kondukas al ĉien.

Incorrect in the intended simple direction construction — al and directional -n duplicate the relation.

✅ La vojoj kondukas ĉien.

The roads lead in every direction.

Confusing partial and total negation

❌ La servo estas nenie disponebla.

Incorrect if the intended meaning is only ‘not available everywhere.’

✅ La servo ne estas ĉie disponebla.

The service is not available everywhere.

Key Takeaways

Use ĉie for every relevant location and ĉien for direction toward every place. Neither form takes plural -j, and the -n of ĉien is exclusively directional. Keep ne ĉie “not everywhere” distinct from nenie “nowhere,” and do not confuse universal ĉie with proximal ĉi tie.
