Nenio means “nothing,” “no thing,” or “nothing of the relevant kind.” It combines negative neni- with general thing/fact ending -o. It stands alone rather than determining a noun, takes accusative -n as nenion, and normally has no plural.
Negative column, thing row
The table-word system crosses five initial meanings with nine semantic endings:
| Element | Contribution | Contrast |
|---|---|---|
| neni- | negative: no qualifying referent exists | i- some, ĉi- every, ki- what |
| -o | general thing, matter, fact, or content | -u individual, -a kind/quality |
The -o row is kio, tio, io, ĉio, nenio. These forms package their referent as a general whole rather than selecting an individual from a named class.
Nenio ŝanĝiĝis post la dua ĝisdatigo.
Nothing changed after the second update.
Mi aŭdis nenion pro la laŭta muziko.
I heard nothing because of the loud music.
Subject nenio has no case ending. Direct-object nenion takes -n. In both cases, the neni- word itself negates the clause; an additional verbal ne would change the logic.
Things, facts, and propositional content
The “thing” covered by -o may be concrete, abstract, or an entire proposition. Context supplies the domain.
Estas nenio en la skatolo krom malnova kvitanco.
There is nothing in the box except an old receipt.
Nenio en lia klarigo kongruas kun la dokumentoj.
Nothing in his explanation matches the documents.
Ŝi promesis reveni hodiaŭ, sed nenio okazis.
She promised to return today, but nothing happened.
— Kion diris la kuracisto? — Nenion alarman; mi nur devas pli ripozi.
— What did the doctor say? — Nothing alarming; I just need to rest more.
In the exchange, nenion stands for no content of an alarming kind. The following adjective describes the implicit thing; it is not a noun determined by nenio.
Adjectives follow and agree in case
Direct descriptions of -o table words follow them: nenio grava, nenion novan. When the table word is accusative, the adjective is accusative too.
Nenio grava mankas el la raporto.
Nothing important is missing from the report.
La komisiono trovis nenion kontraŭleĝan en la kontrakto.
The commission found nothing illegal in the contract.
Mi povas aldoni nenion utilan al tio, kion vi jam diris.
I can add nothing useful to what you have already said.
Do not interpret grava/kontraŭleĝa/utila as evidence that nenio is an adjective-like determiner. The understood structure is approximately “no important thing,” and the descriptive adjective comes after the table word by rule.
Accusative but normally no plural
The forms are nenio and nenion. The -o row permits object -n, but normally rejects plural -j because it presents a general totality rather than counted individuals.
Ni nenion subskribos antaŭ ol la advokato legos la tekston.
We will sign nothing before the lawyer reads the text.
If you need countable items, switch to neniu/neniuj plus a noun: neniuj dosieroj, neniun el la proponoj. A form such as nenioj is not the neutral standard solution.
The possibility of -n is syntactic, not semantic emphasis. Compare Nenio helpis (subject) with Mi provis nenion (object). The negative meaning is unchanged.
One negative marker and double negation
A neni- table word normally negates the entire clause. English “I did not see anything” therefore corresponds to a positive-form verb plus nenion.
Mi vidis nenion tra la densa nebulo.
I did not see anything through the dense fog.
Mi ne vidis nenion; mi ja rimarkis lumon en la fenestro.
It is not true that I saw nothing; I did notice a light in the window.
The second example is deliberate double negation: ne rejects “I saw nothing,” producing the positive inference that something was seen. It is not the ordinary way to say “I didn’t see anything.”
Multiple neni- forms can sometimes reinforce each other in attested expressive usage, but they can also be interpreted compositionally as two negations. Clear expository prose normally places negative force in one table word:
Neniu diris ion pri la prokrasto.
Nobody said anything about the delay.
Here neniu negates the clause, while ion remains an indefinite thing within its scope. Neniu diris nenion can be understood as “Nobody said nothing,” hence everyone said at least something, unless a marked concord reading is forced by context. See negative concord for the full scope analysis.
Nenio, neniu, and nenia
The ending answers a semantic question:
| Form | Domain | Example |
|---|---|---|
| nenio | no thing or content, standalone | Nenio restis. |
| neniu | no individual, with or without noun | Neniu dosiero restis. |
| nenia | no kind or quality | Nenia spuro restis. |
Nenio restis en la dosierujo, ĉar neniu dosiero estis konservita.
Nothing remained in the folder because no file was saved.
The first clause summarizes the absence of any content. The second names the excluded individual class dosiero and therefore uses neniu.
Exception, restriction, and figurative “nothing”
Krom can exempt content from the negative set:
En la retmesaĝo estis nenio krom ligilo al la formularo.
There was nothing in the email except a link to the form.
Nenio alia ol means “nothing other than” and can identify something restrictively rather than deny its existence.
La tiel nomata sekreto estis nenio alia ol simpla kalkuleraro.
The so-called secret was nothing other than a simple calculation error.
Nenio also has an established figurative use meaning something insignificant, powerless, or negligible.
Kompare kun la pasintjara krizo, ĉi tiu problemo estas nenio.
Compared with last year's crisis, this problem is nothing.
That sentence does not claim that the problem literally fails to exist. The comparison presents it as negligible. This figurative extension is standard in speech and writing.
Questions and negative expectations
An open information question uses io. A question containing nenio is biased toward, or surprised by, a zero result.
Ĉu io ŝanĝiĝis post la kunveno?
Did anything change after the meeting?
Ĉu vere nenio ŝanĝiĝis post ĉiuj tiuj diskutoj?
Did nothing really change after all those discussions?
This difference is pragmatic, not merely stylistic. The second question makes the suspected negative outcome salient.
Norm and usage
The negative force, standalone syntax, nenio/nenion case contrast, postposed adjectives, and normal lack of plural are foundational. The Tekstaro abundantly attests concrete, abstract, exception, and figurative uses. Very rare nenioj can occur when a writer deliberately treats several separate “nothings” as countable things, especially in literary or metalinguistic language. That is marked ordinary-noun use, not the neutral plural of nenio; normal prose uses neniuj + noun for countable individuals.
Deliberate ne + nenio is grammatical double negation, but using it as ordinary negative concord conflicts with the standard logical reading. Multiple neni- words can be emphatic in some attested passages; the recommended default remains one negative marker plus appropriately scoped i- forms.
Common Mistakes
Adding verbal ne
❌ Mi ne komprenis nenion.
Incorrect for the intended 'I understood nothing' meaning — this is logical double negation.
✅ Mi komprenis nenion.
I understood nothing.
Forgetting accusative -n
❌ La polico trovis nenio suspektinda.
Incorrect — the table word and its description are the direct object.
✅ La polico trovis nenion suspektindan.
The police found nothing suspicious.
Putting the description before nenio
❌ Grava nenio okazis.
Incorrect — direct descriptions of -o table words follow them.
✅ Nenio grava okazis.
Nothing important happened.
Pluralizing nenio
⚠️ Nenioj restis sur la listo.
Marked and unsuitable here — ordinary list items require an individual expression.
✅ Neniuj eroj restis sur la listo.
No items remained on the list.
Using nenio before a noun
❌ Nenio mesaĝo alvenis.
Incorrect — nenio is standalone and cannot determine mesaĝo.
✅ Neniu mesaĝo alvenis.
No message arrived.
Key Takeaways
- neni- negates; -o denotes a general thing, fact, or content.
- Use nenio as subject/complement and nenion as direct object.
- Descriptive adjectives follow: nenio grava, nenion gravan.
- Do not add ne unless you intend a positive double-negation inference.
- Nenio normally has no plural and never determines a following noun.
