Nenies: The Negative Possessor Correlative

Nenies means “no one’s” or “belonging to nobody.” It combines negative neni- with possessor ending -es. It is an invariant determiner: it normally precedes the possessed expression, supplies definiteness, and never takes plural -j or accusative -n.

Negative column, possessor row

The table-word system combines five information-status initials with nine semantic endings:

ElementContributionContrast
neni-no qualifying referent existsi- some, ti- that, ki- whose
-espossessor or a related “of” role-u individual, -o thing, -a kind

The possessor row is kies, ties, ies, ĉies, nenies. The initial element changes whose identity status is involved; the -es ending consistently expresses possession, belonging, authorship, or a comparable semantic relation.

Esperanto estas nenies privata propraĵo.

Esperanto is nobody's private property.

Mi bezonas nenies permeson por publikigi mian propran tekston.

I need nobody's permission to publish my own text.

In both examples, nenies itself supplies negative force. The first denies ownership by any person. The second denies that any person’s permission is required. Adding ne would reverse rather than reinforce that meaning in logical standard usage.

💡
Expand nenies libro as la libro de neniu persono. This reveals three facts at once: the possessor is negative, the possessed phrase is definite, and nenies replaces la.

A determiner with definite force

Like possessive pronouns and other -es words, nenies is a determiner. It stands before what is possessed and does not combine with the definite article.

Nenies nomo aperis sur la unua versio de la dokumento.

No one's name appeared on the first version of the document.

La aŭtoro de la anonima noto restis nekonata; nenies subskribo videblis.

The author of the anonymous note remained unknown; no one's signature was visible.

The phrase nenies nomo does not mean an arbitrary unnamed name. It denies that the name of any relevant person appeared. If rewritten with a postposed possessor phrase, it becomes approximately la nomo de neniu persono; the article appears because de neniu persono no longer occupies the determiner position.

Standalone use is possible when the possessed item is already given:

— Al kiu apartenas ĉi tiu pluvombrelo? — Ŝajne ĝi estas nenies; ĝi kuŝas ĉi tie de monatoj.

— Who does this umbrella belong to? — Apparently it is nobody's; it has been lying here for months.

Here nenies means “nobody’s [umbrella/property].” In a neutral ownership question, ask Kies ĝi estas?; the negative reply selects nenies.

Normally human possessors

PMEG notes that nenies, like ies and ĉies, is normally used about persons rather than things. If a nonhuman possessor or a class of entities must be named, a de neniu + noun phrase is clearer.

La signalo venis de neniu el la registritaj aparatoj.

The signal came from none of the registered devices.

La spuroj kongruis kun la piedoj de neniu besto konata en la regiono.

The tracks matched the feet of no animal known in the region.

Do not compress these automatically into nenies aparato or nenies besto. The full phrases preserve the nonhuman class and, in the first example, selection from a defined set.

This is a strong usage tendency rather than a morphological impossibility. Context can license creative extensions, especially personification, but the human reading remains the unmarked norm.

Invariant form; agreement stays on the possession

All -es table words reject -j and -n. Number and case belong to the possessed noun phrase.

PhraseWhere marking appears
nenies opiniosingular subject
nenies opiniojplural on the noun
nenies opinionaccusative on the noun
nenies antaŭajn opiniojnplural and accusative on adjective and noun

Mi akceptas nenies opinion sen kritika ekzameno.

I accept nobody's opinion without critical examination.

La redaktoro kopiis nenies antaŭajn komentojn en la finan version.

The editor copied nobody's earlier comments into the final version.

Nenies stays unchanged even though opinion is accusative and komentojn is both plural and accusative. The form does not agree because -es is not the ordinary adjective ending.

The possessor row covers many relations that can be paraphrased with de, including semantic subject or source.

Nenies helpo alvenis dum la unua horo post la akcidento.

No one's help arrived during the first hour after the accident.

La malsukceso estas nenies ekskluziva kulpo; la tuta estraro aprobis la planon.

The failure is no one person's exclusive fault; the whole board approved the plan.

In nenies helpo, the absent person would have provided the help. In nenies kulpo, no individual bears sole responsibility. The precise semantic relation comes from the possessed noun, just as with English possessives.

Clause negation and double negation

A neni- word normally negates the clause. Compare simple negation with deliberate cancellation of that negation:

Tiu terpeco estas nenies propraĵo.

That plot of land is nobody's property.

Tiu terpeco ne estas nenies propraĵo; la municipo posedas ĝin.

It is not true that that plot is nobody's property; the municipality owns it.

The second ne has real semantic work: it denies “belongs to nobody,” yielding “belongs to somebody.” It must not be used merely because English says does not belong to anyone.

When another neni- word already carries clause negation, prefer ies for an additional indefinite possessor slot:

Neniu ŝanĝis ies pasvorton sen permeso.

Nobody changed anyone's password without permission.

The one-negative structure is transparent. Neniu ŝanĝis nenies pasvorton may be interpreted as two negations or as marked concord. The negative-concord guide explains why such stacking is risky.

💡
Use one explicit negative carrier in ordinary prose. If neniu already negates the clause, use ies for “anyone’s”; if nenies carries the negation, do not add ne.

Nenies versus de neniu

The two often overlap, but their syntax differs:

Nenies konsilo ŝanĝis ŝian decidon.

No one's advice changed her decision.

La konsilo de neniu el la fakuloj ŝanĝis ŝian decidon.

The advice of none of the experts changed her decision.

Nenies is compact and preposed. De neniu el la fakuloj can identify the comparison set and take further modifiers. Use the full phrase whenever the possessor must be described, contrasted, or explicitly nonhuman.

Questions and pragmatic force

A neutral possessor question uses kies. A question with nenies seeks confirmation of ownerlessness and is therefore strongly biased.

Kies estas la biciklo ĉe la pordo?

Whose is the bicycle by the door?

Ĉu tiu forlasita biciklo vere estas nenies?

Does that abandoned bicycle really belong to nobody?

The second is natural only when the possibility of no owner is already under discussion. It is not a neutral way to ask who owns something.

Norm and usage

The possessor meaning, determiner behavior, definite force, invariant form, and clause-negating power are standard. PMEG and the Tekstaro particularly attest nenies with human possessors and nouns such as propraĵo, helpo, opinio, and kulpo.

Extensions to nonhuman possessors are interpretable but less neutral. For precise modern prose, reserve nenies primarily for persons and use de neniu + noun when the possessor’s category matters.

Common Mistakes

Adding verbal ne

❌ Mi ne bezonas nenies aprobon.

Incorrect for the intended 'I need nobody's approval' meaning — this is double negation.

✅ Mi bezonas nenies aprobon.

I need nobody's approval.

Adding the article

❌ La nenies nomo aperis en la protokolo.

Incorrect — nenies already determines the possessed noun.

✅ Nenies nomo aperis en la protokolo.

No one's name appeared in the minutes.

Adding accusative to nenies

❌ Mi prenis neniesn dosieron.

Incorrect — -es table words never take -n.

✅ Mi prenis nenies dosieron.

I took nobody's file.

Pluralizing the possessor word

❌ Neniesj argumentoj konvinkis la komisionon.

Incorrect — plurality belongs to argumentoj, not nenies.

✅ Nenies argumentoj konvinkis la komisionon.

No one's arguments convinced the committee.

Using nenies for a nonhuman possessor

⚠️ Nenies tegmento estis difektita de la ŝtormo.

Understandable but unclear for the intended building relation — standalone nenies normally evokes a human possessor.

✅ La tegmento de neniu konstruaĵo estis difektita de la ŝtormo.

No building's roof was damaged by the storm.

Key Takeaways

  • neni- negates; -es marks a possessor or related “of” role.
  • Nenies is a determiner and replaces la.
  • It never takes -j or -n; inflect the possessed phrase instead.
  • It normally refers to human possessors; use de neniu + noun for explicit classes.
  • Do not add ne unless you intend to cancel the negative meaning.
