Kio: The Question/Relative Thing Correlative

Kio asks or relates an unspecified thing, matter, event, or idea: Kio okazis? “What happened?” and Mi faris tion, kion vi petis “I did what you asked.” Its initial ki- supplies question or relative force; its final -o supplies the broad domain “thing or matter.”

The core uses below are neutral in conversation and writing. A rare plural kioj is attested, but it remains nontraditional and unusual; standard learner usage treats kio as nonplural.

Kio in the 5×9 table

Esperanto’s 45 table words combine five fixed initial series with nine fixed final domains. They form a closed system rather than ordinary roots plus ordinary word endings.

DimensionRelevant forms
Initial serieski- question/relative, ti- demonstrative, i- indefinite, ĉi- universal, neni- negative
Final domains-u individual, -o thing, -a kind, -es possessor, -e place, -am time, -al reason, -el manner, -om quantity
The -o columnkio, tio, io, ĉio, nenio
The ki- rowkiu, kio, kia, kies, kie, kiam, kial, kiel, kiom

The architecture makes kio predictable: question/relative ki- plus thing-domain -o. Do not build forms such as kiu-o or kioa. See The Table-Word System for the complete grid.

Asking about a thing or matter

Use kio when the answer is an unspecified thing, an activity, an event, or a whole idea rather than a selected individual.

Kio okazis al la fenestro?

What happened to the window?

— Kio estas en la skatolo? — La malnova fotilo de mia avo.

— What is in the box? — My grandfather's old camera.

Kio tiel maltrankviligas vin?

What is worrying you so much?

In these examples kio is the subject. When it is a direct object, add -n:

Kion vi mendis por tagmanĝo?

What did you order for lunch?

Mi ne aŭdis, kion ŝi diris ĉe la fino.

I didn't hear what she said at the end.

After an ordinary preposition, use basic kio, because the preposition marks the role:

Pri kio vi volas paroli post la kunveno?

What do you want to talk about after the meeting?

Per kio ni povas malfermi ĉi tiun skatolon?

What can we use to open this box?

💡
Use kio for a subject, kion for a direct object, and preposition + kio for a prepositional role: kio okazis, kion vi vidis, pri kio vi pensas.

No ordinary plural

The -o table words present their content as a general “thing/matter” whole. They can take accusative -n, but normally not plural -j. If you mean countable individual things, choose kiuj with an understood or expressed noun.

Kiuj el tiuj iloj ankoraŭ funkcias?

Which of those tools still work?

Standard usage does not ask Kioj ankoraŭ funkcias? Use kiuj objektoj, kiuj aferoj, or simply kiuj when a countable set is understood. Forms such as kioj occur in modern usage when a speaker wants to separate several hard-to-name matters. PMEG describes that use as logical but nontraditional and still uncommon. It is best recognized rather than adopted in ordinary learner prose.

Kio, kiu, or kia?

English what covers several questions that Esperanto separates by semantic domain.

QuestionWhat it seeksTypical answer
Kio estas tio?thing or definitionĜi estas ŝargilo.
Kiu estas via kuracisto?identity of an individualDoktoro Marin.
Kia estas via kuracisto?quality or kindTre pacienca.

When kio refers to a person, it normally asks about profession, status, or role rather than identity:

Kio ŝi estas? — Ŝi estas arkitekto.

What is she? — She is an architect.

To ask who she is, use Kiu ŝi estas? To ask what she is like, use Kia ŝi estas? The English surface word alone cannot choose the Esperanto correlative; you must choose both the ki- force and the semantic ending.

Modifiers follow kio

An adjective describing an -o correlative normally follows it and carries matching accusative marking when needed.

Kion interesan vi eksciis dum la vojaĝo?

What interesting thing did you learn during the trip?

Kio nova okazis en la oficejo hodiaŭ?

What new thing happened at the office today?

Compare ordinary noun phrases, where adjective position is freer. With kio, io, tio, ĉio, nenio, the established pattern is table word first: io utila, nenion gravan.

Embedded questions

The same form introduces an indirect or embedded question. Its case comes from its role inside that embedded clause, not from the main verb.

Ĉu vi scias, kio kaŭzis la prokraston?

Do you know what caused the delay?

Mi ankoraŭ ne decidis, kion fari ĉi-vespere.

I still haven't decided what to do this evening.

In the second example, kion fari is a shortened question-like clause: roughly “what I should do.” This is a productive and neutral construction.

Relative kio

Relative kio commonly refers back to an -o table word such as tio, io, ĉio, nenio, or to an understood tio.

Mi faris ĉion, kion mi povis por helpi.

I did everything I could to help.

Prenu tion, kio estas sur la supra breto.

Take what is on the top shelf.

Elektu, kion vi bezonas, kaj lasu la ceteron.

Choose what you need and leave the rest.

The last example contains an understood tion: Elektu [tion], kion vi bezonas. If the antecedent is an ordinary countable noun, use kiu, not kio: la libro, kiun vi bezonas.

Relative kio can also comment on a whole preceding clause or event:

La trajno denove malfruis, kio ĝenis ĉiujn pasaĝerojn.

The train was late again, which annoyed all the passengers.

Here kio represents the fact that the train was late, not the train itself. Kiu would instead point to a particular noun antecedent.

💡
If English “which” comments on an entire preceding event, use kio. If it identifies a particular noun again, use the appropriate form of kiu.

Common Mistakes

1. Omitting object -n

❌ Kio vi aĉetis ĉe la bazaro?

Incorrect — kio is the direct object of aĉetis.

✅ Kion vi aĉetis ĉe la bazaro?

What did you buy at the market?

2. Pluralizing standard kio

❌ Kioj aparatoj estas tiuj?

Incorrect in standard usage — kio neither pluralizes nor directly determines aparatoj.

✅ Kiuj aparatoj estas tiuj?

Which devices are those?

3. Putting kio directly before a noun

❌ Kio libro estas via?

Incorrect — choose identity with kiu or kind with kia.

✅ Kiu libro estas via?

Which book is yours?

4. Using kio for a quality question

❌ Kio estis la filmo? — Tre amuza.

Incorrect for asking what the film was like.

✅ Kia estis la filmo? — Tre amuza.

What was the film like? — Very funny.

Key Takeaways

  • Ki- gives question/relative force; -o gives the broad thing or matter domain.
  • Use kio as subject, kion as direct object, and preposition + kio after a preposition.
  • Standard kio has no plural; choose kiuj or a noun phrase for countable individuals.
  • Relative kio follows tio/io/ĉio/nenio, an understood tio, or a whole preceding idea.
  • Choose kiu for individual identity and kia for kind or quality.
