Ĉiel means “in every way” or “by every relevant method.” It is the regular universal member of the -el manner series, but it is rare in modern use. Neutral prose often chooses ĉiamaniere, laŭ ĉiuj manieroj, or a more precise phrase instead.
The universal-manner cell
The 45 table words form a closed 5×9 grid. Initial ĉi- supplies total, universal force; final -el selects manner. Their fixed combination ĉiel therefore quantifies ways or methods.
| Form | Manner force |
|---|---|
| kiel | how; in which way |
| tiel | in that way; to that degree |
| iel | somehow; in some way |
| ĉiel | in every way |
| neniel | in no way |
Kiel la volontuloj helpis? — Ĉiel: ili kuiris, tradukis kaj transportis ekipaĵon.
How did the volunteers help? — In every way: they cooked, translated, and transported equipment.
The reply is concise and rhetorically effective, but it is uncommon. The context supplies a set of possible kinds of assistance, and ĉiel claims comprehensive coverage of that set.
Manner, method, and respect
Ĉiel modifies a predicate by universalizing how an action is performed or how a judgment holds. In practice, the “every way” set is contextually bounded rather than metaphysically unlimited.
La organizaĵo ĉiel subtenis la familiojn post la inundo.
The organization supported the families in every way after the flood.
La nova solvo estas ĉiel pli praktika ol la antaŭa.
The new solution is more practical in every respect than the previous one.
Both sentences are grammatical but lexically marked by rarity. In ordinary contemporary speech, speakers are more likely to say:
La organizaĵo ĉiamaniere subtenis la familiojn post la inundo.
The organization supported the families in every way after the flood.
La nova solvo estas pli praktika laŭ ĉiuj gravaj kriterioj.
The new solution is more practical by all the important criteria.
These alternatives are not mechanically interchangeable. Ĉiamaniere preserves manner; laŭ ĉiuj kriterioj explicitly shifts to standards of evaluation; per ĉiuj disponeblaj rimedoj emphasizes instruments or resources.
The broader relationship between a predicate and its method is covered under manner adverbs.
Ni provis solvi la problemon per ĉiuj disponeblaj rimedoj.
We tried to solve the problem by every available means.
Why ĉiel is not a universal degree word
Other -el forms, especially kiel and tiel, often express degree: Kiel alta? Tiel alta. PMEG notes a lexical asymmetry: ĉiel is used only for manner. It does not naturally mean “to every degree.” This is one place where knowing the table predicts the broad domain but not every cell's full usage.
La monto estas ekstreme alta.
The mountain is extremely high.
La rezulto estis multe pli bona ol ni atendis.
The result was much better than we expected.
Neither degree expression should be replaced by ĉiel alta or ĉiel pli bona if the intended meaning is simply “extremely.” The earlier example ĉiel pli praktika instead means practical in every respect—a manner/respect reading, not maximal degree.
Ĉiel versus neighboring universal words
Select the final element by semantic domain:
| Domain | Form | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| place | ĉie | everywhere |
| time | ĉiam | always |
| reason | ĉial | for every reason |
| manner | ĉiel | in every way |
| quantity | ĉiom | the whole amount |
Ni ĉie serĉis la dokumenton kaj ĉiel provis rekonstrui ĝian enhavon.
We searched everywhere for the document and tried in every way to reconstruct its contents.
Here ĉie answers “where did we search?” while rare ĉiel answers “how did we try?” English may use everywhere and every way, but Esperanto encodes the contrast in the endings -e and -el.
Negation and logical scope
Ne ĉiel means “not in every way”: some methods or respects remain excluded. Neniel means “in no way” and gives the predicate full negative force.
La du planoj ne ĉiel samas; iliaj kostoj estas tre malsamaj.
The two plans are not alike in every respect; their costs are very different.
La du planoj neniel samas.
The two plans are in no way alike.
Ĉu la nova sistemo ĉiel superas la malnovan? — Ne; ĝi estas pli rapida, sed malpli fleksebla.
Does the new system surpass the old one in every respect? — No; it is faster, but less flexible.
Because ne ĉiel is itself unusual, ne laŭ ĉiuj kriterioj will often communicate the partial-negation reading more smoothly.
Form, norm, and attestation
Ĉiel is an invariant adverb-like table word. It never takes -j or -n. The Fundamento includes it as part of the universal series, so it is standard rather than a later coinage. Detailed modern grammar describes it as manner-only and rare, and corpus use confirms that it is far less frequent than ĉie, ĉiam, or ĉio.
Do not confuse ĉiel with ĉielo, “sky,” or its regular adverb ĉiele, “heavenly/in a sky-like way.” The identical letters at the beginning reflect separate grammatical structures.
Super ni la ĉielo estis klara, kaj ni ĉiel klopodis teni la teleskopon senmova.
Above us the sky was clear, and we tried in every way to keep the telescope still.
The noun ĉielo names the sky. The later ĉiel is the rare but standard manner correlative.
Common Mistakes
Using ĉiel for place
❌ La novaĵoj aperis ĉiel en la urbo.
Incorrect for place — final -el selects manner.
✅ La novaĵoj aperis ĉie en la urbo.
The news appeared everywhere in the city.
Using ĉiel as a degree intensifier
❌ La valizo estas ĉiel peza.
Incorrect for ‘extremely heavy’ — ĉiel is manner-only in established usage.
✅ La valizo estas ekstreme peza.
The suitcase is extremely heavy.
Adding endings
❌ Ili ĉieln helpis nin.
Incorrect — ĉiel never takes accusative -n.
✅ Ili ĉiamaniere helpis nin.
They helped us in every way.
Building a hybrid from English “every how”
❌ Ĉiu-kiel ni provis ripari ĝin.
Incorrect — the table is a closed system, not free compounding.
✅ Ni ĉiel provis ripari ĝin.
We tried to repair it in every way.
Confusing ĉiel with ĉielo
❌ La ĉiel estis plena de steloj.
Incorrect — the noun ‘sky’ is ĉielo.
✅ La ĉielo estis plena de steloj.
The sky was full of stars.
Key Takeaways
Ĉiel is the standard but rare universal-manner correlative, meaning “in every way.” It is invariant and, unlike degree uses of kiel/tiel, does not serve as a general universal degree word. Prefer ĉiamaniere, per ĉiuj rimedoj, or laŭ ĉiuj kriterioj when one of those makes the intended relation clearer.
