Ĉial means “for every reason,” “on every relevant ground,” or “because of everything in the relevant set of reasons.” It is a fully regular, foundational table word, but it is scarcely used in practice. A strong command of ĉial therefore includes knowing both its precise meaning and when a transparent phrase will communicate more naturally.
The universal-reason cell
Esperanto's correlatives form a closed 5×9 system. The initial ĉi- contributes universal force, while final -al selects cause, motive, or reason. Their combination ĉial means “for every reason.”
| Form | Reason meaning |
|---|---|
| kial | for what reason; why |
| tial | for that reason; therefore |
| ial | for some reason |
| ĉial | for every reason |
| nenial | for no reason whatsoever; under no motivation |
Kial vi amas tiun urbon? — Ĉial: pro la homoj, la parkoj kaj eĉ la pluvo.
Why do you love that city? — For every reason: because of the people, the parks, and even the rain.
This witty answer is the clearest environment for ĉial: the question supplies the reason domain, and the reply universalizes it. It is grammatical and understandable, but deliberately striking because the word is rare.
What universal reason means
Like other universal table words, ĉial ranges over a contextually relevant set. It rarely claims that literally every logically imaginable cause applies. A committee may have discussed cost, safety, legality, and timing; ĉial can gather those stated grounds into one total judgment.
La propono ŝajnis ĉial defendebla: ĝi estis pli sekura, pli simpla kaj malpli kosta.
The proposal seemed defensible on every ground: it was safer, simpler, and less expensive.
Ni ekzamenis la planon laŭ kosto, tempo kaj risko. Ĉial ĝi superis la alternativon.
We examined the plan by cost, time, and risk. On every ground it surpassed the alternative.
Both uses are (formal) and rhetorically compressed. In neutral modern prose, laŭ ĉiu kriterio, pro ĉiuj ĉi kialoj, or an explicit list will usually sound more idiomatic and be easier to process.
Pro ĉiuj ĉi kialoj la komitato malakceptis la proponon.
For all these reasons, the committee rejected the proposal.
This explicit version is the recommended neutral choice in reports, arguments, and ordinary conversation. The rarity of ĉial is an honest lexical fact; the table's formal regularity does not force every cell to have equal frequency.
Ĉial is an adverbial reason expression
Ĉial can modify a predicate or an entire clause by supplying universal causal or motivational grounds. It does not name a countable object, determine a noun, or introduce a subordinate clause.
La kandidato estas ĉial taŭga por la posteno.
The candidate is suitable for the position on every relevant ground.
Ĉial ni devus konservi la malnovan arbon, se ĝia stato restas sekura.
For every relevant reason, we should preserve the old tree if its condition remains safe.
These sentences are grammatical but (formal) and unusual. Neutral alternatives would be laŭ ĉiuj kriterioj in the first and pro ĉiuj ĉi kialoj in the second. The alternative must fit the intended relation: criteria are not always causes, so do not replace mechanically.
Because ĉial itself represents a reason, it contrasts with ĉar, which introduces a clause giving a reason.
Ni restis hejme, ĉar la vojoj estis glaciaj.
We stayed home because the roads were icy.
La vojoj estis glaciaj; tial ni restis hejme.
The roads were icy; therefore we stayed home.
Ĉial would not mean “therefore” here. Tial points to one identified reason—the icy roads—whereas ĉial quantifies all reasons in a relevant set. See cause clauses for the clause-versus-adverb distinction.
Contrasts within the reason series
Choosing an initial changes the quantificational force while -al keeps the reason domain stable.
Kial ŝi rezignis? — Ial ŝi ne volas klarigi; eble la laboro estis tro streĉa.
Why did she resign? — For some reason she does not want to explain; perhaps the work was too stressful.
Ŝi citis tri kialojn, kaj pro ĉiuj tri ŝi volis rezigni.
She cited three reasons, and for all three she wanted to resign.
The second sentence is what rare ĉial could compress, but the explicit wording is more natural because it preserves the stated number and avoids lexical surprise.
Ĉial also differs by one vowel from ĉiel. -al selects reason; -el selects manner. The distinction is structural, not a matter of choosing whichever sounds closer to English.
Ĉu vi dankas ilin pro la tempo, la mono aŭ la konsiloj? — Ĉial; sen ili la projekto malsukcesus.
Are you thanking them for the time, the money, or the advice? — For all of those reasons; without them the project would have failed.
The compact reply is deliberately rhetorical. Natural explanatory prose would normally say pro ĉio ĉi. The contrast with ĉiel remains structural: ĉial supplies grounds, whereas ĉiel describes ways or methods.
Negation and scope
Ne ĉial rejects universal motivation: not every proposed reason supports the conclusion. It does not mean that no reason supports it. Nenial supplies the zero end of the same scale, though nenial is itself uncommon.
Ne ĉial mi subtenas la reformon; la ekonomia argumento konvinkas min, sed la jura ne.
I do not support the reform for every reason; the economic argument convinces me, but the legal one does not.
Mi nenial subtenus reformon, kiu forigus tiun protekton.
No reason could make me support a reform that removed that protection.
The first is a marked logical contrast; the more idiomatic neutral version is Ne ĉiuj argumentoj konvinkas min. Do not use nenial to mean “without a reason” while asserting that the event occurred; senkaŭze fills that role.
Li ne foriris senkaŭze; li ricevis urĝan telefonvokon.
He did not leave without a reason; he received an urgent phone call.
Form, norm, and attestation
All -al table words are invariant. Ĉial takes neither plural -j nor accusative -n. The Fundamento explicitly includes it in the correlative system, so it is not an invention or reform. PMEG, however, reports that it is hardly used in practice, and corpus evidence is correspondingly sparse. The responsible recommendation is therefore: recognize it as standard, reserve it for a context where its compact universal-reason meaning is genuinely useful, and otherwise choose a transparent phrase.
Common Mistakes
Using ĉial for “therefore”
❌ Pluvas; ĉial ni restu hejme.
Incorrect — one identified reason calls for tial, not universal ĉial.
✅ Pluvas; tial ni restu hejme.
It is raining; therefore let us stay home.
Using ĉial as a conjunction
❌ Ni nuligis la piknikon ĉial pluvis.
Incorrect — ĉial cannot introduce a reason clause.
✅ Ni nuligis la piknikon, ĉar pluvis.
We canceled the picnic because it was raining.
Confusing reason and manner
❌ La teamo helpis nin ĉial.
Incorrect for ‘in every way’ — final -al selects reason.
✅ La teamo helpis nin ĉiel.
The team helped us in every way.
Adding forbidden endings
❌ Mi ĉialn kontraŭas la proponon.
Incorrect — ĉial never takes accusative -n.
✅ Pro ĉiuj ĉi kialoj mi kontraŭas la proponon.
For all these reasons, I oppose the proposal.
Inventing a hybrid
❌ Ĉiu-kial la decido estas ĝusta.
Incorrect — table-word dimensions cannot be recombined as ordinary words.
✅ La decido estas ĝusta pro ĉiuj menciitaj kialoj.
The decision is right for all the reasons mentioned.
Key Takeaways
Ĉial is the standard universal-reason correlative: ĉi- “all” plus -al “reason.” It is invariant and does not introduce clauses. It contrasts with tial “for that reason,” ĉar “because,” and ĉiel “in every way.” Because modern usage is extremely rare, prefer explicit expressions such as pro ĉiuj ĉi kialoj unless the compact, rhetorically marked form serves a clear purpose.
