Coordination does not erase weak-verb morphology. In راحت وقالت “she went and said,” both verbs carry feminine perfect agreement; in عايز يروح ويقول “he wants to go and say,” one modal licenses two bare imperfects; in بيروح وييجي “he goes and comes,” b- can scope over a tightly linked habitual pair. The central question is therefore not merely “Which word means and?” but which grammatical material is shared and which must be repeated.
The baseline here is mainstream urban Cairene (informal). Formal MSA coordinates related forms too, but its mood and agreement inventory is not imported into these Egyptian constructions. The general event-packaging contrast is developed further under serial coordination.
Every finite perfect verb keeps its agreement
Perfect verbs are independently inflected even when they share a subject. Weak stem alternations apply separately to each conjunct: راح / راحت / رحنا and قال / قالت / قلنا cannot borrow one another’s endings.
| Subject | Coordinated perfect | Analysis |
|---|---|---|
| هو | رَاحْ وَقَالْ — rāḥ wi-ʾāl | Two 3rd masculine singular forms |
| هي | رَاحِتْ وَقَالِتْ — rāḥit wi-ʾālit | Feminine ـت on both verbs |
| إحنا | رُحْنَاْ وَقُلْنَاْ — ruḥna wi-ʾulna | Short hollow stems plus ـنا |
| هم | رَاحُواْ وَقَالُواْ — rāḥu wi-ʾālu | Plural ـوا on both verbs |
راحت وقالت للمدير على المشكلة
rāḥit wi-ʾālit lil-mudīr ʿala l-mushkila
She went and told the manager about the problem.
رحنا وبعنا الأجهزة القديمة
ruḥna wi-biʿna l-ʾaghiza l-ʾadīma
We went and sold the old equipment.
English can state the subject once and leave both verbs unmarked for gender. Egyptian can omit the repeated independent pronoun, but the verbs themselves still show the available agreement.
Shared and repeated b- have different packaging
In a tight pair describing one conventional or repeated sequence, b- on the first verb can take scope over a following bare imperfect: بيروح وييجي “he goes back and forth,” بيشتري ويبيع “he buys and sells.” Repeating b-—بيروح وبييجي—is also grammatical. It gives each conjunct a more independent assertion and is useful when the second event is separately elaborated or contrasted.
بيروح وييجي بين المكتب والمخزن طول اليوم
biyrūḥ wi-yīgi bēn il-maktab wil-makhzan ṭūl il-yōm
He goes back and forth between the office and the warehouse all day.
بيروح بدري وبييجي قبل الاجتماع بساعة
biyrūḥ badri wi-biyīgi ʾabl il-igtimāʿ bi-sāʿa
He leaves early, and he comes an hour before the meeting.
The first sentence packages going and coming as one back-and-forth routine. The second asserts and times each movement separately. Neither pattern is inherently “more correct”; their discourse structures differ.
The same b-imperfect sequence can be current or habitual. Time expressions disambiguate without changing the coordinated verb shapes.
بيروح وييجي بين الأوضتين دلوقتي
biyrūḥ wi-yīgi bēn il-ʾuḍtēn dilwaʾti
He’s going back and forth between the two rooms now.
بيروح وييجي بين الفرعين كل أسبوع
biyrūḥ wi-yīgi bēn il-farʿēn kull ʾusbūʿ
He goes back and forth between the two branches every week.
Calling b- simply “present tense” misses this aspectual range.
One licenser can govern two bare imperfects
Modals and control predicates commonly license coordinated bare imperfects. In عايز يروح ويقول, both يروح and يقول fall inside the scope of عايز. Adding b- to the second verb would normally turn it into a separate actual/habitual assertion rather than the second desired act.
عايز يروح ويقول لهم الحقيقة بنفسه
ʿāyez yirūḥ wi-yʾūl lahum il-ḥaʾīʾa bi-nafsu
He wants to go and tell them the truth himself.
لازم نبيع العربية وندفع الدين
lāzem nibīʿ il-ʿarabiyya wi-nidfaʿ id-dēn
We have to sell the car and pay the debt.
No MSA subjunctive or jussive ending appears. Bare morphology is licensed by the Egyptian construction. Person marking is still repeated: first-plural نـ occurs on نبيع and ندفع.
Future scope: shared حـ versus repeated حـ
Future حـ can scope over a closely integrated sequence: حيروح ويقول لهم presents going-and-telling as one projected plan. Repeating it—حيروح وحيقول لهم—makes both future claims explicit and can support contrast, separate timing, or insistence.
حيروح ويقول لهم أول ما يوصل
ḥayirūḥ wi-yʾūl lahum ʾawwil ma yiwṣal
He’ll go and tell them as soon as he arrives.
حيروح النهارده وحيقول لهم بكرة
ḥayirūḥ in-nahārda wi-ḥayiʾūl lahum bukra
He’ll go today, and he’ll tell them tomorrow.
The separate adverbs in the second sentence favor repeated حـ because the events occupy different future times.
Negation and objects reveal scope
To negate one integrated pair, Egyptian often uses لا or ولا to coordinate the negative alternatives. To assert two independent negatives, repeat ما...ش. Weak stems and object clitics remain local to their own verbs.
ماراحش ولا قال لهم حاجة
ma-rāḥsh wala ʾāl lahum ḥāga
He neither went nor told them anything.
ماراحش وماقالش لهم السبب
ma-rāḥsh wi-ma-ʾālsh lahum is-sabab
He didn’t go, and he didn’t tell them the reason.
The positive-to-negative contrast راح وقال → ماراحش وماقالش repeats the circumfix because each verb is independently negated. With objects, each clitic attaches to the verb that selects it.
رماها وباع الباقي
ramāha wi-bāʿ il-bāʾi
He threw it away and sold the rest.
مارماهاش؛ خدها وباعها
ma-ramāhāsh؛ khad-ha wi-bāʿha
He didn’t throw it away; he took it and sold it.
In conversation
حتروح وتقول لهم ولا أروح أنا؟
ḥatirūḥ wi-tiʾūl lahum walla ʾarūḥ ʾana؟
Will you go and tell them, or should I go?
حروح وأقول لهم، بس استنى خمس دقايق
ḥarūḥ wi-ʾaʾūl lahum، bass istanna khams daʾāyeʾ
I’ll go and tell them; just wait five minutes.
The second future verb is bare because both actions form one promised sequence. The imperative استنى begins a separate instruction.
Key Takeaways
- Every finite perfect conjunct keeps its own agreement and weak-stem alternation.
- A licenser or aspect marker can scope over a tightly integrated pair; repeat it for independently timed or asserted events.
- Negation and object clitics remain local to the verb whose scope and argument structure they express.
Common Mistakes
❌ هي راح وقال للمدير
Incorrect — both coordinated perfect verbs must agree with the feminine subject.
✅ هي راحت وقالت للمدير
hiyya rāḥit wi-ʾālit lil-mudīr
She went and told the manager.
❌ عايز بيروح وبيقول لهم
Incorrect for two desired actions — عايز licenses bare imperfects.
✅ عايز يروح ويقول لهم
ʿāyez yirūḥ wi-yʾūl lahum
He wants to go and tell them.
❌ رمى هي وباعه
Incorrect — an object pronoun attaches to its own verb; independent هي cannot serve as this direct object.
✅ رماها وباعها
ramāha wi-bāʿha
He threw it away and sold it.
❌ هما راحوا ويقولوا لهم امبارح
Incorrect viewpoint mix for a completed sequence yesterday — the second verb needs perfect marking too.
✅ هما راحوا وقالوا لهم امبارح
humma rāḥu wi-ʾālu lahum mbāreḥ
They went and told them yesterday.
