Mainstream Cairene forms a productive future with bound حـ ḥa- plus the person-marked bare imperfect. The marker is written as part of the verb: حكتب، حتكتبي، حيكتبوا. It can present a prediction, intention, promise, offer, or consequence; context and interaction determine the exact force.
This page uses حـ consistently as the house spelling. Widespread Egyptian writing also uses هـ in forms such as هكتب (informal spelling variant). Learn to recognize it, but keep one spelling in your own text. The future-particle overview develops its discourse functions.
Formation rule: replace verbal بـ with حـ
Take the ordinary imperfect person form, remove verbal بـ, and join حـ. Do not remove the person prefix.
| Subject | Future of كتب / يكتب | Romanization |
|---|---|---|
| أنا | حكتب | ḥaktib |
| إنت, man | حتكتب | ḥatiktib |
| إنت, woman | حتكتبي | ḥatiktibi |
| هو | حيكتب | ḥayiktib |
| هي | حتكتب | ḥatiktib |
| إحنا | حنكتب | ḥaniktib |
| إنتوا | حتكتبوا | ḥatiktibu |
| هما | حيكتبوا | ḥayiktibu |
إحنا حنكتب الملخص بعد ما نراجع التسجيل.
ʾiḥna ḥaniktib il-molakhkhaṣ baʿd ma nirāgiʿ it-tasgīl.
We'll write the summary after we review the recording.
Future حنكتب contrasts with bare نراجع, licensed after بعد ما. Both retain first-person plural نـ.
Person and gender stay inside the future word
حـ itself does not agree. Agreement remains on the imperfect form beneath it. Masculine حتكتب, feminine حتكتبي, and plural حتكتبوا therefore stay distinct.
إنت حتخلص الشغل إمتى؟ وإنت حتخلصي الجزء بتاعك إمتى؟
ʾinta ḥatikhlaṣ ish-shoghl ʾimta? wi-ʾinti ḥatikhlaṣi l-gozʾ bitāʿik ʾimta?
When will you finish the work? And when will you finish your part? (first to a man, then to a woman)
English you will finish hides gender. Egyptian تخلص/تخلصي preserves it after حـ.
Prediction, intention, and commitment
Future حـ does not encode one English auxiliary. A weather forecast, personal intention, promise, or conditional consequence can all use the same form.
الجو حيبرد بالليل، فخد جاكيت معاك.
il-gaww ḥayibrad bil-lēl, fa-khod gākēt maʿāk.
It will get cold tonight, so take a jacket with you. (prediction)
حكلم الشركة بنفسي ومش حستنى رد بالإيميل.
ḥakallim ish-sharika binafsi wi-mish ḥastanna radd bil-īmēl.
I'll call the company myself and won't wait for an email reply. (intention)
لو اتأخرت، حستناك عند الباب الرئيسي.
law itʾakhkhart, ḥastannāk ʿand il-bāb ir-raʾīsi.
If you're late, I'll wait for you at the main entrance. (conditional consequence)
The suffix ـك in حستناك attaches after the future verb. It does not interrupt حـ and the person-marked stem.
Time-context minimal pair
بجهز القاعة كل خميس قبل الاجتماع.
bagahhiz il-ʾāʿa koll khamīs ʾabl il-igtimāʿ.
I prepare the room every Thursday before the meeting. (routine)
حجهز القاعة بكرة قبل ما الضيوف يوصلوا.
ḥagahhiz il-ʾāʿa bokra ʾabl ma ḍ-ḍuyūf yiwṣalu.
I'll prepare the room tomorrow before the guests arrive. (projected event)
The lexical stem and first-person prefix remain; بـ versus حـ changes the viewpoint from actual routine to projected occurrence.
Negation uses independent مش before the future word
The mainstream Cairo production baseline negates the future proposition with مش + حـ-verb. مش remains separate; حـ remains joined.
حنبعت النتيجة بكرة الصبح.
ḥanibʿat in-natīga bokra ṣ-ṣobḥ.
We'll send the result tomorrow morning.
مش حنبعت النتيجة قبل ما المدير يوافق.
mish ḥanibʿat in-natīga ʾabl ma l-modīr yiwāfiʾ.
We won't send the result before the manager approves.
Circumfixal future negation occurs in some speakers and regions (regional/social variation), but it is not the neutral production baseline here. This is variation, not evidence that every alternative is an error.
Object and recipient clitics follow the future verb
All ordinary clitic attachment remains available. Build from inside outward: future marker + person-marked verb + object + recipient.
حبعتهولك أول ما أوصل المكتب.
ḥa-bʿat-hū-lak ʾawwil ma ʾawṣal il-maktab.
I'll send it to you as soon as I reach the office. (male addressee)
حـ marks projection, بعت supplies first-person action, ـه is the object, and ـلك is the recipient. The whole chain is one written word.
High-frequency weak verbs keep their own imperfect stems
Do not derive weak futures by attaching حـ to the perfect. Use the verified imperfect stem: راح / يروح → حروح، جه / ييجي → حييجي، قال / يقول → حاقول.
حروح بدري، وهو حييجي بعدي بنص ساعة.
ḥarūḥ badri, wi-huwwa ḥayīgi baʿdi binoṣṣ sāʿa.
I'll go early, and he'll come half an hour after me.
حاقولك الحقيقة لما نبقى لوحدنا.
ḥaʾūlak il-ḥaʾīʾa lamma nibʾa liwaḥdina.
I'll tell you the truth when we're alone. (male addressee)
Spelling and connected pronunciation can vary, but the person prefix and lexical alternation remain part of the verb. Learn the perfect/imperfect pair before adding حـ.
Two-turn dialogue
حتعملي إيه بعد الشغل؟ ـ حعدي على أمي، وبعدها حروح البيت.
ḥatiʿmali ʾēh baʿd ish-shoghl? — ḥaʿaddi ʿala ʾommi, wi-baʿdaha ḥarūḥ il-bēt.
What will you do after work? — I'll stop by my mother's, then go home. (question to a woman)
Register and spelling variation
حـ is mainstream urban Egyptian (informal/neutral). هـ is a widespread colloquial spelling and may reflect the same marker. Formal MSA سـ/سوف belongs to a separate formal system (formal) and does not stack with حـ. Regional, age, class, and community practices vary in spelling and pronunciation (regional/social). Songs may stretch the future word for meter (performance language) without changing its morphology.
Common Mistakes
1. Separating the bound prefix
❌ إحنا ح نخلص الشغل بكرة.
Incorrect house segmentation — حـ joins the verb.
✅ إحنا حنخلص مراجعة العقد بكرة قبل الضهر.
iḥna ḥanikhlaṣ morāgʿit il-ʿaʾd bokra ʾabl iḍ-ḍohr.
We'll finish reviewing the contract tomorrow before noon.
2. Stacking حـ and verbal بـ
❌ هو حيبيكتب الرسالة بالليل.
Incorrect — future حـ selects the bare person-marked imperfect, not a b-imperfect.
✅ هو حيكتب الرسالة بعد ما يرجع.
huwwa ḥayiktib ir-risāla baʿd ma yirgaʿ.
He'll write the letter after he returns.
3. Omitting the person prefix
❌ هما حكتبوا الرد بكرة.
Incorrect — third-person plural keeps يـ inside the future word.
✅ هما حيكتبوا الرد ويبعتوه الصبح.
humma ḥayiktibu r-radd wi-yibʿatūhu ṣ-ṣobḥ.
They'll write the reply and send it in the morning.
4. Separating a clitic from its host
❌ حبعته هو لك لما أوصل.
Incorrect segmentation — object and recipient attach to the future verb.
✅ حجيبهالك وأنا راجع من السوق.
ḥa-gīb-hā-lik wi-ʾana rāgiʿ min is-sūʾ.
I'll bring it to you while I'm coming back from the market. (female object and addressee)
