The suffix ـيّة often creates abstract nouns from adjectives, nisba forms, or established lexical bases: مسؤولية “responsibility,” خصوصية “privacy,” إنسانية “humanity/humaneness,” and جدية “seriousness.” Traditional grammar calls this a “constructed” or “industrial” maṣdar. In current Egyptian it is best treated as a productive-looking word-formation family whose members still have to be learned individually.
This suffix does not turn every adjective into an equally natural Cairo noun. Meaning, pronunciation, countability, complements, and register belong to the lexical item.
For the broader system these nouns belong to, first review the maṣdar overview. The present page focuses only on the productive-looking ـيّة family and its limits.
A working pattern map
| Base | Abstract noun | Cairene value | Register |
|---|---|---|---|
| مسؤول masʾūl | مَسْؤُولِيَّةْ masʾūleyya | responsibility | neutral |
| خصوصي khuṣūṣi | خُصُوصِيَّةْ khuṣūṣeyya | privacy; specificity | neutral/professional |
| إنساني insāni | إِنْسَانِيَّةْ insāneyya | humanity; humaneness | neutral-formal |
| جدي geddi | جِدِّيَّةْ geddeyya | seriousness | neutral |
| واقعي wāʾeʿi | وَاقِعِيَّةْ wāʾeʿeyya | realism; practicality | academic/neutral |
| جاهز gāhiz | جَاهِزِيَّةْ gāhizeyya | readiness | professional/technical |
| أهم ʾahamm | أَهَمِّيَّةْ ʾahammeyya | importance | neutral |
حماية خصوصية المريض مسؤولية المستشفى
ḥimāyit khuṣūṣeyyit il-marīḍ masʾūleyyit il-mostashfa
Protecting the patient's privacy is the hospital's responsibility. (professional)
جدية الفريق فرقت في النتيجة
geddeyyit il-farīʾ faraʾit fin-natīga
The team's seriousness made a difference to the result. (neutral)
Rule 1: the abstract noun is feminine
Nouns in ـيّة are grammatically feminine, so adjectives, demonstratives, and predicates agree accordingly. In iḍāfa or before a suffix, final ة is pronounced t: أهمية القرار ʾahammiyyit il-ʾarār, مسؤوليته masʾūliyyitu.
الأهمية الحقيقية للقرار ظهرت بعدين
il-ʾahammeyya l-ḥaʾīʾeyya lil-ʾarār ẓihirit baʿdēn
The decision's real importance became clear later. (neutral)
مسؤوليته كبيرة، بس صلاحياته محدودة
masʾūleyyeto kibīra, bass ṣalāḥeyyāto maḥdūda
His responsibility is large, but his authority is limited. (professional)
Abstract mass readings are usually singular. Plurals appear when the noun has lexicalized count senses: شخصيات can mean personalities or characters, and خصوصيات private matters. Do not pluralize every abstraction merely because English has a plural.
Rule 2: distinguish an abstract noun from a feminine adjective
The same ending can mark a feminine nisba adjective. سياسة رسمية means “an official policy,” where رسمية modifies سياسة. الرسمية الزايدة means “excessive formality,” where الرسمية is a noun. Position, definiteness, and sentence function decide.
دي نسخة رسمية من العقد
di nuskha rasmeyya min il-ʿaʾd
This is an official copy of the contract. (رسمية is an adjective)
الرسمية الزايدة خلت الاجتماع تقيل
ir-rasmeyya z-zāyda khallit il-igtimāʿ tiʾīl
The excessive formality made the meeting feel heavy. (الرسمية is an abstract noun)
English often uses the same base with -al and -ality, but Egyptian ambiguity is resolved syntactically, not by spelling alone.
Rule 3: property noun versus participant state
An ـيّة noun packages a property as a topic. An adjective or participle predicates that property directly of a participant. Compare جاهزية المشروع “the project's readiness” with المشروع جاهز “the project is ready.”
جاهزية المشروع محتاجة مراجعة أخيرة
gāhizeyyit il-mashrūʿ miḥtāga murāgaʿa ʾakhīra
The project's readiness needs one final review. (professional abstraction)
المشروع جاهز للتسليم
il-mashrūʿ gāhiz lit-taslīm
The project is ready for delivery. (direct state predicate)
أهمية الخطة بانت وقت التنفيذ
ʾahammeyyit il-khuṭṭa bānit waʾt it-tanfīz
The plan's importance became apparent during implementation. (abstract property)
الخطة مهمة عشان بتوفر وقت
il-khuṭṭa mohemma ʿashān bitwaffar waʾt
The plan is important because it saves time. (direct predication)
The direct predicate is usually lighter in conversation. The abstract noun is useful when the property itself must become a subject, object, or complement.
Rule 4: learn complements lexically
مسؤولية عن introduces what someone is responsible for; أهمية لـ can identify relevance to someone or something; خصوصية often enters iḍāfa; مصداقية عند can locate credibility in an audience's judgment. No universal preposition follows ـيّة.
هي مسؤولة عن متابعة الطلبات
hiyya masʾūla ʿan mutābaʿit iṭ-ṭalabāt
She is responsible for following up the requests. (participant state)
مسؤوليتها عن المتابعة واضحة
masʾūleyyitha ʿan il-mutābaʿa wāḍḥa
Her responsibility for follow-up is clear. (abstract noun)
The pair contrasts a state predicate with an abstract nominalization while preserving the lexical عن frame.
Rule 5: time comes from the surrounding clause
Abstract nouns do not carry tense. A predicate and time expression locate the property.
جاهزية الفريق امبارح كانت ضعيفة
gāhizeyyit il-farīʾ imbāriḥ kānit ḍaʿīfa
The team's readiness was poor yesterday. (professional)
جاهزية الفريق بكرة حتكون أحسن
gāhizeyyit il-farīʾ bokra ḥatikūn ʾaḥsan
The team's readiness will be better tomorrow. (professional)
Register and productivity
أهمية، مسؤولية، جدية، خصوصية are common in educated Cairo conversation. جاهزية، مصداقية، استدامة cluster in professional, media, and academic domains (professional/academic). A finite or adjectival sentence is often more natural in casual speech. MSA case endings and tanwīn remain formal MSA features; they are not required by the abstract suffix. Regional, age, class, and community preferences may affect which abstraction feels ordinary.
Common Mistakes
❌ أقدر أزود ية لأي صفة
Incorrect—the suffix does not guarantee an established Egyptian abstract noun.
✅ لازم أتعلم الكلمة واستعمالها
lāzim ʾatʿallim il-kilma wi-stiʿmālha
I have to learn the word and its usage. (natural finite alternative)
❌ المشروع جاهزية
Incorrect for the intended participant state—جاهزية names readiness as an abstraction.
✅ المشروع جاهز
il-mashrūʿ gāhiz
The project is ready. (neutral)
❌ المسؤولية الكبير
Incorrect—nouns in ـيّة are feminine.
✅ المسؤولية الكبيرة
il-masʾūleyya l-kibīra
The major responsibility. (neutral)
❌ مسؤوليته يعني هو مسؤول
Incorrect—the abstract noun with a possessive suffix is not interchangeable with a participant predicate.
✅ هو مسؤول عن النتيجة
huwwa masʾūl ʿan in-natīga
He is responsible for the result. (neutral)
أهمية الموضوع واضحة
ʾahammeyyit il-mawḍūʿ wāḍḥa
ʾahammiyyatu al-mawḍūʿi wāḍiḥatun
Pronunciation/register error—ordinary Cairo does not add MSA case endings or tanwīn.
Key Takeaways
ـيّة creates many feminine abstract nouns, but every member is lexical. Distinguish abstract noun from feminine adjective, property from participant state, and mass abstraction from lexicalized count senses. Learn complements and register with the word, and let the surrounding clause—not the suffix—anchor time.
