This page analyzes an original three-turn joke rather than quoting a circulating routine. A customer asks about a self-help book on stopping procrastination; his final answer performs the very habit the book promises to cure. The humor depends on grammar, reference, expectation, and timing working together.
Complete original joke
واحد كلم مكتبة وقال: عندكم كتاب اسمه إزاي تبطل تأجيل؟
wāḥid kallim maktaba wi-ʾāl: ʿandukum kitāb ismu ʾizzāy tibaṭṭal taʾgīl?
A man called a bookshop and said, ‘Do you have a book called How to Stop Procrastinating?’
الموظف قاله: موجود، أحجزهولك دلوقتي؟
il-muwaẓẓaf ʾālu: mawgūd, ʾaḥgizholak dilwaʾti?
The employee told him, ‘It's available. Shall I reserve it for you now?’
الراجل سكت شوية وقاله: طب ما نخلي الموضوع ده لبكرة بقى.
ir-rāgil sikit shiwayya wi-ʾālu: ṭabb ma nikhalli l-mawḍūʿ da li-bokra baʾa.
The man paused and replied, ‘Well then, why don't we leave this whole thing until tomorrow?’
The joke is complete at لبكرة بقى. Explaining the irony inside the performance would weaken it; annotation belongs after the audience has had time to connect the book title with the delayed reservation.
Setup: build a serious practical frame
Initial واحد introduces a nonspecific male protagonist, much like “a man” in an English joke. كلم مكتبة means he contacted a bookshop; the object is an institution, so the natural English adds called. The coordinated perfects كلم... وقال move directly into reported speech.
Inside the question, عندكم is literally “at you-plural.” Addressing a shop as an institution commonly uses plural ـكم even when one employee answers. كتاب اسمه... is “a book whose name is...,” with ـه on اسمه referring to masculine كتاب.
واحد دخل محل وسأل: عندكم منبه مايتأخرش؟
wāḥid dakhal maḥall wi-saʾal: ʿandukum munabbih mayitʾakhkharsh?
A man entered a shop and asked, ‘Do you have an alarm clock that isn't late?’ (original setup pattern)
This reuse example creates a premise but not yet a joke. A setup must sound ordinary enough for the later reinterpretation to surprise the listener.
The employee's turn: clitics make the offer compact
قاله joins the recipient suffix ـه to قال: “said to him.” موجود is a zero-copula answer, “It is available.” The book remains recoverable, so no independent subject pronoun is needed.
أحجزهولك packages three ideas into one word: أحجز “I reserve,” ـه “it,” and ـلك “for you.” The connecting vowel is audible in ʾaḥgizholak, but the written clitics remain attached. English spreads the same roles across several words.
التذكرة موجودة، أحجزهالك قبل ما السعر يزيد؟
it-tazkara mawgūda, ʾaḥgizhālak ʾabl ma s-siʿr yizīd?
The ticket is available; shall I reserve it for you before the price rises?
The employee's دلوقتي؟ creates the crucial time contrast. The expected answer is an immediate yes or no; the punchline instead chooses delay.
Punchline: ambiguity plus enacted contradiction
الراجل سكت شوية explicitly gives the performer a short beat. It lets the audience anticipate a decision. The particle طب marks a response or adjustment, roughly “well then.” ما نخلي...؟ is a suggestion, “why don't we leave...?”; this ما is not the negative circumfix ما...ش.
الموضوع ده is deliberately loose. It can refer narrowly to reserving the copy, broadly to the purchase, or humorously to the entire project of stopping procrastination. English this whole thing preserves that ambiguity better than a falsely precise noun.
Final بقى does not mean one fixed English word. Here it gives the delayed proposal a resigned, conversational finish. لبكرة then enacts procrastination. The man has not merely discussed delay: he delays obtaining the anti-delay book.
قال إنه حيبطل تأجيل، وبعدين أجل القرار نفسه.
ʾāl innu ḥayibaṭṭal taʾgīl, wi-baʿdēn ʾaggal il-ʾarār nafsu.
He said he would stop procrastinating, and then postponed the decision itself. (the comic mechanism stated directly)
Four performance diagnostics
- Keep the setup neutral. A comic voice too early announces the trick.
- Stress the time contrast. The offer ends on دلوقتي; the punchline ends on لبكرة.
- Pause once, not everywhere. The short silence after the employee's offer represents hesitation and prepares the reversal.
- Stop after بقى. An extra explanation competes with the audience's inference.
المؤدي وقف لحظة بعد دلوقتي، وبعدها قال لبكرة بهدوء.
il-muʾaddi wiʾif laḥẓa baʿd dilwaʾti, wi-baʿdaha ʾāl li-bokra bihudūʾ.
The performer paused for a moment after ‘now,’ then said ‘until tomorrow’ calmly. (performance direction)
Written punctuation can suggest the boundary, but timing belongs to delivery. A long theatrical silence may work onstage and feel unnatural in ordinary conversation. The performance guide separates scripted timing from neutral speech.
Grammar systems cooperating
The joke's three perfect verbs كلم، قال، سكت provide the narrative spine. Zero-copula موجود keeps the employee's reply quick. Joined suffixes maintain the man and book as referents without repeated nouns. طب، ما، بقى organize stance. Finally, دلوقتي/لبكرة create the semantic opposition that unlocks the joke.
If any one layer is flattened, the joke weakens. Replacing every clitic with a full pronoun makes it heavy; translating بقى mechanically can make it puzzling; removing the title of the book destroys the contradiction.
Register, variation, and code choice
The joke uses mainstream Cairene (informal/performance language). إزاي، دلوقتي، طب، بقى are ordinary Egyptian resources, but their arrangement and pause are crafted for a joke. A formal MSA retelling could be grammatical (formal) yet would create a different persona and rhythm.
Regional and social repertoires use different particles, timing, and joke frames (regional/social). Do not assign this invented speaker a class or community identity from بقى alone. Code-switching the book title into English could fit some speakers and settings, but it would be a marked characterization choice, not a universal Cairo habit.
The text is wholly original. When analyzing a real comedian's routine, attribute the writer and performer, quote only the minimum required, and distinguish the scripted text from the delivered version.
Reusing the structure without copying the joke
Build a neutral need, offer an immediate solution, then let the final response undermine the stated goal. The contradiction must come from the character's own action rather than from a random surprise.
قال إنه عايز يوفر، وبعدها طلب أغلى حاجة في المحل.
ʾāl innu ʿāyiz yiwaffar, wi-baʿdaha ṭalab ʾaghla ḥāga fil-maḥall.
He said he wanted to save money, then ordered the most expensive thing in the shop. (incongruity pattern)
Common Mistakes
1. Explaining the punchline before it lands
❌ الراجل بيأجل كل حاجة، وعشان كده قال نخليها لبكرة.
Poor performance choice — it states the inference before the audience can make it.
✅ حسيب جملة لبكرة في الآخر من غير شرح.
ḥasīb gomlit li-bokra fil-ʾākhir min ghēr sharḥ.
I'll leave the ‘until tomorrow’ line at the end without explanation.
2. Separating the object clitics
❌ أحجز هو لك دلوقتي؟
Incorrect — Egyptian attaches the book and beneficiary clitics to أحجز.
✅ لو الكتاب موجود، خليهولي لحد بليل.
law il-kitāb mawgūd, khallīhūli laḥadd bilēl.
If the book is available, keep it for me until tonight.
3. Silently formalizing the voice
❌ لازم أغير إزاي إلى كيف لأن النكتة مكتوبة.
False rule — written annotation can preserve the performed Egyptian form.
✅ حكتب إزاي زي ما اتقالت، وأسجل الفصحى لو المتكلم تحول ليها.
ḥaktob ʾizzāy zayy ma itʾālit, wi-ʾasaggil il-foṣḥa law il-mitkallim taḥawwal līha.
I'll write ʾizzāy as it was said and record MSA if the speaker actually switches to it.
4. Treating stage timing as ordinary service behavior
❌ حسكت وقت طويل كل ما موظف يسألني سؤال بسيط.
Pragmatic mismatch — a punchline pause can sound obstructive in a real service exchange.
✅ في مكالمة حقيقية حرد بسرعة، وفي الأداء حستخدم سكتة واحدة محسوبة.
fi mukālma ḥaʾīʾiyya ḥarod bisorʿa, wi-fil-ʾadāʾ ḥastakhdim sakta waḥda maḥsūba.
In a real call I'll answer promptly; in performance I'll use one measured pause.
Key Takeaways
- The joke opposes immediate دلوقتي to delayed لبكرة.
- أحجزهولك compresses verb, object, and beneficiary into one written word.
- الموضوع ده stays usefully ambiguous, while طب and بقى shape the response.
- A single pause prepares the reversal; extra explanation weakens it.
- Preserve Cairene forms and label performance, MSA, regional, and code-switched choices.
