Egyptian بين bēn locates something in a relation bounded by two or more participants. It covers both English between and among: بين البنك والصيدلية “between the bank and the pharmacy,” بين صحابي “among my friends.” It also builds abstract frames for differences, relationships, comparisons, disputes, choices, and distribution.
The useful question is not “between or among?” but “what set or boundaries define this relation?” A pair is normally coordinated after بين; a plural noun or plural suffix can supply the whole set at once.
For the reciprocal pronouns that often occur with this relation, see Reciprocal Pronouns.
The suffix paradigm
With pronouns, بين takes attached suffixes. Before “us,” the two n sounds merge into a strong consonant: بيننا bēnna. Masculine and feminine “you” have one spelling بينك but distinct Cairene readings.
| Person | Form | Cairene reading | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| me | بيني | bēni | between/among me |
| you (m.sg.) | بينك | bēnak | between/among you |
| you (f.sg.) | بينك | bēnik | between/among you |
| him/it | بينه | bēnu | between/among him/it |
| her/it | بينها | bēnha | between/among her/it |
| us | بيننا | bēnna | between/among us |
| you (pl.) | بينكم | bēnkum | between/among you all |
| them | بينهم | bēnhum | between/among them |
قسمنا الحساب بيننا بالتساوي.
ʾasamna l-ḥisāb bēnna bit-tasāwi.
We split the bill equally among ourselves.
حصل بينهم سوء تفاهم واتحل بسرعة.
ḥaṣal bēnhum sūʾ tafāhum wi-tḥall bi-sorʿa.
A misunderstanding arose between them and was resolved quickly.
Two boundaries: بين X وY
For two full noun phrases, the basic pattern is بين X وY. One بين introduces the relation; و coordinates the second boundary.
A spatial scene
الكافيه بين البنك والصيدلية، وقدامه موقف الأتوبيس.
il-kāfēh bēn il-bank wi-ṣ-ṣaydaliyya, wi-ʾoddāmu mawʾif il-ʾotobīs.
The café is between the bank and the pharmacy, and the bus stop is in front of it.
حطيت الكرسي بين الترابيزة والحيطة.
ḥaṭṭēt il-kursi bēn it-tarābēza wi-l-ḥēṭa.
I put the chair between the table and the wall.
With two pronouns, Egyptian repeats the preposition because a free subject pronoun cannot serve as the ordinary complement after و: بيني وبينك “between me and you,” بينه وبينها “between him and her.”
الكلام ده بيني وبينك، ماتقولوش لحد.
il-kalām da bēni wi-bēnak, ma-tʾolūsh li-ḥadd.
This stays between you and me; don’t tell anyone.
في فرق كبير بينه وبين أخوه في الطباع.
fi farʾ kibīr bēnu wi-bēn ʾakhūh fiṭ-ṭibāʿ.
There is a big difference in temperament between him and his brother.
Repeating بين before the second full noun is also possible for balance or emphasis, especially in longer phrases. It is required structurally when each side is a suffix form.
Among a group
Egyptian does not require a separate preposition equivalent to English among. A plural noun after بين defines the set.
الخبر انتشر بين الطلبة قبل المحاضرة.
il-khabar intashar bēn iṭ-ṭalaba ʾabl il-moḥāḍara.
The news spread among the students before the lecture.
هي معروفة بين جيرانها إنها بتساعد الكل.
hiyya maʿrūfa bēn gīrānha innaha bitsāʿid il-koll.
She is known among her neighbors for helping everyone.
وسط can also mean “in the middle of/among,” but it highlights physical or social embeddedness: واقف وسط الزحمة “standing in the middle of the crowd.” بين is the broader relational term and works naturally for abstract sets.
Whole predicate frames
Several high-frequency predicates select بين, even where English chooses another shape. Learn them as complete frames.
| Egyptian frame | Natural English | Common trap |
|---|---|---|
| قارن بين X وY | compare X with/to Y | English does not say “compare between” |
| فرق بين X وY | distinguish/tell the difference between X and Y | English verb may take direct objects |
| اختار من بين | choose from among | compound frame includes من |
| قسم بين | divide among | English uses among for a group |
قارن بين العرضين قبل ما تختار.
ʾārin bēn il-ʿarḍēn ʾabl ma tikhtār.
Compare the two offers before you choose.
مش بعرف أفرق بين أصواتهم في التليفون.
mish baʿraf ʾafarraʾ bēn ʾaṣwāthum fit-tilifōn.
I can’t tell their voices apart on the phone.
اختار اسم من بين التلات اقتراحات دول.
ikhtār ism min bēn it-talāt iʾtirāḥāt dōl.
Choose a name from among these three suggestions.
The first predicate is especially important for English speakers: Egyptian قارن بين, not an English-shaped direct-object construction followed by a translated with.
Optional ما بين and abstract relations
Colloquial Egyptian frequently uses ما بين with the same core relational meaning, especially in balanced or emphatic phrases: ما بيني وبينك “between you and me,” العلاقة ما بين الشغل والراحة “the relationship between work and rest.” The shorter بين is fully natural and is the production baseline here.
Abstract nouns readily take the relation:
العلاقة بين النوم والتركيز واضحة.
il-ʿalāʾa bēn in-nōm wit-tarkīz wāḍḥa.
The relationship between sleep and concentration is clear.
لازم نلاقي توازن بين السرعة والدقة.
lāzim nilāʾi tawāzon bēn is-sorʿa wid-diʾʾa.
We need to find a balance between speed and accuracy.
Relatives resume the relation
English may leave a gap: “the people a dispute arose between.” Egyptian keeps بين with a suffix inside the relative clause.
دول الزميلين اللي حصل بينهم الخلاف.
dōl iz-zimīlēn illi ḥaṣal bēnhum il-khilāf.
These are the two colleagues between whom the disagreement arose.
فاكر المكتبين اللي الممر بينهم ضيق؟
fākir il-maktabēn illi l-mamarr bēnhum ḍayyiʾ?
Do you remember the two offices with the narrow corridor between them?
Register
بين works across conversational, professional, and formal Egyptian (neutral). فيما بين and heavily balanced repetitions are common in administrative or academic prose (formal/academic) but can sound needlessly heavy in casual speech. Regional and community varieties may vary the suffix vowels; the syntactic contrast between a plural set and coordinated boundaries is shared, while this page uses Cairene forms.
Common Mistakes
Copying English compare without بين
❌ قارن العرض الأول مع العرض التاني.
English-shaped valency; the standard Egyptian frame taught here is قارن بين.
✅ قارن بين السعر والخدمة في العرضين.
ʾārin bēn is-siʿr wil-khidma fil-ʿarḍēn.
Compare the price and service in the two offers.
Using a free pronoun as the second boundary
❌ الموضوع بيني وإنت.
Incorrect—the second pronoun also needs a preposition host.
✅ الموضوع بيني وبينك ومش محتاج يقلق حد.
il-mawḍūʿ bēni wi-bēnak wi-mish miḥtāg yiʾallaʾ ḥadd.
The matter is between you and me and needn’t worry anyone.
Separating the suffix
❌ وزعنا الشغل بين هم.
Incorrect—the plural pronoun attaches directly.
✅ وزعنا الشغل بينهم حسب الخبرة.
wazzaʿna sh-shoghl bēnhum ḥasab il-khibra.
We distributed the work among them according to experience.
Stranding بين in a relative
❌ دول الفرق اللي المنافسة قوية.
Incorrect for ‘the teams between which competition is strong’; the relation is missing.
✅ دول الفرق اللي المنافسة بينهم قوية السنة دي.
dōl il-firaʾ illi l-monāfasa bēnhum ʾawiyya s-sana di.
These are the teams whose competition is strong this year.
Key Takeaways
بين covers English between and among. Use بين X وY for two noun boundaries, repeat the host with two pronouns (بيني وبينك), and use a plural complement for a set (بينهم). Learn abstract frames such as قارن بين، فرق بين، اختار من بين, and keep the suffixed relation inside relative clauses.
