Egyptian مش mish is an independent negative particle. It normally precedes a noun, adjective, participle, prepositional predicate, future proposition, or constituent placed in corrective focus. It can also precede a b-imperfect verbal phrase when the speaker treats that phrase as a current or contrasted description.
English uses not across all these environments, so English speakers often overextend مش to every verb. Mainstream Cairene instead divides the work: joined ما...ش normally negates a finite event, مش negates predicates or focused material, and مفيش negates existence or availability. The choice reveals how the speaker packages the proposition; see the negation overview for the complete map.
Rule 1: put مش directly before a nonverbal predicate
Present-time Egyptian nominal clauses have no overt copular verb. مش therefore appears directly before the material being denied.
| Predicate type | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| noun | subject + مش + noun | كريم مش المدير |
| adjective | subject + مش + adjective | الخطة مش واضحة |
| participle | subject + مش + participle | سلمى مش جاية |
| prepositional phrase | subject + مش + PP | المفتاح مش في الدرج |
كريم مش مدير الفرع؛ هو مسؤول المخزن.
Karīm mish modīr il-farʿ; huwwa masʾūl il-makhzan.
Karim isn't the branch manager; he's the storeroom supervisor.
الخطة مش واضحة من غير جدول زمني.
il-khoṭṭa mish wāḍḥa min ghēr gadwal zamani.
The plan isn't clear without a timeline.
نهى مش جاية المكتب النهارده؛ شغالة من البيت.
Noha mish gayya l-maktab in-naharda; shaghghāla min il-bēt.
Noha isn't coming to the office today; she's working from home.
الختم مش على النسخة دي؛ على النسخة الزرقا.
il-khatm mish ʿala n-noskha di; ʿala n-noskha z-zarʾa.
The stamp isn't on this copy; it's on the blue one.
The predicate itself keeps gender and number morphology. مش never agrees: مش واضح، مش واضحة، مش واضحين.
Rule 2: tense is carried by the surrounding construction
Bare مش gives present-time negation with a zero-copula predicate. Past predicates use negated كان; future predicates commonly use مش + حـ + يبقى or مش + future verb.
العرض مش جاهز للمراجعة.
il-ʿarḍ mish gāhiz lil-morāgaʿa.
The proposal isn't ready for review.
العرض ماكانش جاهز امبارح لما المدير طلبه.
il-ʿarḍ ma-kānsh gāhiz imbāriḥ lamma l-modīr ṭalabo.
The proposal wasn't ready yesterday when the manager requested it.
العرض مش حيبقى جاهز قبل يوم الخميس.
il-ʿarḍ mish ḥa-yibʾa gāhiz ʾabl yōm il-khamīs.
The proposal won't be ready before Thursday.
Do not treat مش as carrying tense. كان places the state in the past; future حـ + يبقى projects it forward.
Rule 3: مش can negate a future proposition
Future حـ forms behave as predicates under independent مش. The two words remain separate, while حـ stays joined to its verb.
أنا مش حمضي العقد قبل ما المحامي يراجعه.
ʾana mish ḥamḍi l-ʿaʾd ʾabl ma l-moḥāmi yirāgʿo.
I'm not going to sign the contract before the lawyer reviews it.
هي مش حتتأخر المرة دي؛ خرجت بدري.
hiyya mish ḥa-titʾakhkhar il-marra di; kharagit badri.
She won't be late this time; she left early.
The future word is one host: حمضي، حتتأخر. Writing مشحمضي would wrongly join an independent negator; writing ح امضي would split a bound future marker.
Rule 4: compare plain event negation with verbal-focus مش
Joined ما...ش is the safest neutral answer to “Does this event happen?” Independent مش can present a b-imperfect phrase as a current, corrective, or metalinguistic description.
ليلى مابتراجعش الحسابات يوم الجمعة.
Lēla ma-bitrāgiʿsh il-ḥisābāt yōm il-gomʿa.
Laila doesn't review the accounts on Fridays. (neutral habit)
ليلى مش بتراجع الحسابات دلوقتي؛ بتكلم العميل.
Lēla mish bitrāgiʿ il-ḥisābāt dilwaʾti; bitikallim il-ʿamīl.
Laila isn't reviewing the accounts right now; she's speaking to the customer.
This is a scope minimal pair, not an absolute tense rule. مابتراجعش دلوقتي is possible, and مش بتراجع عادة can correct a claim about a habit. The continuation and prosody reveal whether the speaker simply denies an event or replaces one verbal description with another.
أنا مش بقول إن السعر غالي؛ بقول إن الشروط مش واضحة.
ʾana mish baʾūl inn is-siʿr ghāli; baʾūl inn ish-shorūṭ mish wāḍḥa.
I'm not saying the price is high; I'm saying the terms aren't clear.
Here مش بقول rejects an interpretation of the speaker's words. The second مش negates an adjective predicate.
Rule 5: مش before a constituent corrects that constituent
Position and contrastive stress can narrow scope to a person, object, place, or time.
مش نادر اللي اتصل بالشركة؛ أخوه هو اللي اتصل.
mish Nādir illi ittaṣal bish-shirka; ʾakhūh huwwa lli ittaṣal.
It wasn't Nader who called the company; his brother did.
نادر اتصل بالشركة مش بالبنك.
Nādir ittaṣal bish-shirka mish bil-bank.
Nader called the company, not the bank.
The first corrects the caller; the second corrects the destination. A strong pitch accent normally falls on نادر or البنك, and the corrective continuation confirms the intended scope. In writing, the continuation is more reliable than trying to represent stress.
Rule 6: existence belongs to مفيش
Compare a known entity with a denied property against denial that any entity exists.
القاعة مش فاضية؛ فيها محاضرة.
il-ʾāʿa mish fāḍya; fīha moḥāḍara.
The hall isn't empty; there's a lecture in it.
مفيش قاعة فاضية في المبنى النهارده.
mafīsh ʾāʿa fāḍya fi l-mabna n-naharda.
There isn't an empty hall in the building today.
The first identifies the hall and denies “empty.” The second denies that any empty hall is available. Neutral Cairo does not replace the second with مش فيه.
A natural turn
إنت مشغول؟ ـ مش مشغول، بس مش حقدر أخرج قبل ما أخلص المكالمة.
ʾinta mashghūl? — mish mashghūl, bass mish ḥa-ʾdar ʾakhrog ʾabl ma ʾakhallaṣ il-mokālma.
Are you busy? — I'm not busy, but I won't be able to go out before I finish the call.
The first مش negates an adjective state. The second scopes over a future ability proposition. A more forceful stress on مشغول would correct the label “busy”; neutral stress simply answers the question.
Register and variation
Independent مش is mainstream urban Egyptian (informal/neutral). Alexandrian, Delta, Upper Egyptian, Bedouin, age, class, and community varieties differ in vowel quality and in how freely مش occurs before verbal material (regional/social). Formal MSA uses constructions including ليس، لا، لم، لن according to predicate and tense (formal); none is a word-for-word casual replacement for all uses of مش. Songs, slogans, and dramatic dialogue may prolong or heavily stress مش (performance).
Common Mistakes
1. Joining independent مش to its predicate.
❌ العقد مشجاهز للتوقيع.
Incorrect house spelling — مش is an independent word.
✅ العقد مش جاهز للتوقيع قبل مراجعة المحامي.
il-ʿaʾd mish gāhiz lit-tawʾīʿ ʾabl morāgaʿit il-moḥāmi.
The contract isn't ready to be signed before the lawyer's review.
2. Putting مش after the predicate by English-like afterthought.
❌ المكتب مفتوح مش النهارده.
Wrong for neutral ‘the office isn't open today’ — this order instead creates a marked correction such as ‘open, but not today.’
✅ المكتب مش مفتوح للزوار النهارده بسبب الصيانة.
il-maktab mish maftūḥ liz-zuwwār in-naharda bisabab iṣ-ṣiyāna.
The office isn't open to visitors today because of maintenance.
3. Using مش for a neutral completed event.
❌ سلمى مش بعتت الملف امبارح.
Incorrect as a plain report that the event did not happen — use joined ما...ش.
✅ سلمى مابعتتش الملف امبارح عشان النت كان فاصل.
Salma ma-baʿatitsh il-malaf imbāriḥ ʿashān in-nitt kān fāṣil.
Salma didn't send the file yesterday because the internet was down.
4. Using مش فيه for neutral nonexistence.
❌ مش فيه حد في الاستقبال.
Incorrect as the neutral existential negative — use مفيش.
✅ مفيش حد في الاستقبال بعد الساعة ستة.
mafīsh ḥadd fi l-istiʾbāl baʿd is-sāʿa sitta.
There isn't anyone at reception after six.
5. Replacing مش mechanically with formal ليس.
العقد ليس جاهزا للتوقيع.
al-ʿaqdu laysa dʒāhizan lit-tawqīʿi.
The contract is not ready for signature. (formal MSA)
✅ العقد مش جاهز للتوقيع لسه.
il-ʿaʾd mish gāhiz lit-tawʾīʿ lissa.
The contract isn't ready to be signed yet. (neutral Cairene)
The first is valid formal Arabic, not an error; the mistake is treating it as the unmarked everyday form.
Key Takeaways
- Keep مش independent and place it before noun, adjective, participial, or prepositional predicates.
- Use ماكانش for a past negative predicate and مش + حـ-verb for future scope.
- Distinguish neutral event ما...ش from current, corrective, or metalinguistic مش + verbal phrase.
- Put مش before the constituent being corrected and let prosody plus a continuation identify focus.
- Use مفيش for nonexistence rather than treating مش as a universal word for English not.
