放 (fàng) — put / place / release

(fàng) means "to put, place, set down." Every other sense grows from that single image of releasing something from your hand into a resting place: release it into a location (put it down), release it from control (let go, take a holiday), release sound into the air (play music), release an ingredient into a pot (add salt). Once you feel the "let it out / set it down" core, the scattered dictionary entries — 放假, 放心, 放音乐, 放盐 — line up as one verb. The main grammar hurdle is the placement frame: putting X somewhere almost always uses 把 X 放在…, not plain word order.

Sense 1: put, place, set down

The workhorse sense. Because you are handling a specific, known object and settling it in a specific place, 放 lives naturally in the disposal construction, with the location attached after 放 as a 在-complement: 把 X 放在 + place.

我把钥匙放在门口的桌子上了。

wǒ bǎ yàoshi fàng zài ménkǒu de zhuōzi shàng le

I put the keys on the table by the door.

请把手机放好,别弄丢了。

qǐng bǎ shǒujī fàng hǎo, bié nòng diū le

Put your phone away properly — don't lose it.

你把行李放哪儿了?我怎么找不到?

nǐ bǎ xíngli fàng nǎr le? wǒ zěnme zhǎo bu dào

Where did you put the luggage? Why can't I find it?

Sense 2: let go, release, set at ease

Release from your grip or your control. 放手 (fàngshǒu) "let go of the hand," 放假 (fàng jià) "let out for a holiday," 放弃 (fàngqì) "give up," and the reassuring 放心 (fàngxīn) "let the heart down = don't worry / rest assured."

你放心,这件事我一定帮你办好。

nǐ fàngxīn, zhè jiàn shì wǒ yídìng bāng nǐ bàn hǎo

Don't worry — I'll definitely get this sorted out for you.

学校下周一开始放假,我想回家看看。

xuéxiào xià zhōuyī kāishǐ fàng jià, wǒ xiǎng huí jiā kànkan

都这么晚了,你就别不放心了。

dōu zhème wǎn le, nǐ jiù bié bú fàngxīn le

It's this late already — stop worrying.

Sense 3: play (media)

For turning on recorded sound or video — music, a song, a film, a voice message — the verb is 放, meaning "let it play." (This is a device playing back; making or performing music yourself is a different verb.)

你能放点儿轻音乐吗?我想放松一下。

nǐ néng fàng diǎnr qīng yīnyuè ma? wǒ xiǎng fàngsōng yíxià

Can you play some light music? I'd like to relax a bit.

今晚电影院放一部老电影,要不要去看?

jīn wǎn diànyǐngyuàn fàng yí bù lǎo diànyǐng, yào bu yào qù kàn

The cinema's showing an old film tonight — want to go see it?

Sense 4: add, put in (ingredients)

In cooking, 放 is "add / put in" an ingredient. It competes with 加 (jiā) "add," but 放 is the more everyday kitchen word.

这个菜别放太多盐,我们都吃得清淡。

zhège cài bié fàng tài duō yán, wǒmen dōu chī de qīngdàn

Don't put too much salt in this dish — we all eat light.

Grammar notes

The placement frame is the thing to drill. Chinese won't accept a bare 放书在桌子上 in flat subject-verb-object order: a specific object being disposed of needs either the 把 construction or, at minimum, the location bundled onto the verb as *放在…. The location is a result complement after 放, not a coverb before it — contrast this with the free-standing locative 在, sorted out on the 在 as coverb vs. verb page. See also the progressive/locative uses of 在 (zài).

Note that 放假 is a separable verb (离合词): 放 "release" + 假 "leave" are a verb-object pair, so a duration or measure splits them — 放两个星期的假 "have a two-week holiday," never *放假两个星期. The mirror-image verb, taking something up rather than setting it down, is 拿 (ná).

Common Mistakes

1. Putting the location before 放 as a coverb. In the 把 frame, the place goes after 放 as a 在-complement.

❌ 请把手机在桌子上放。

Incorrect — the location attaches after 放 as 放在…, not before it.

✅ 请把手机放在桌子上。

qǐng bǎ shǒujī fàng zài zhuōzi shàng

Please put your phone on the table.

2. Placing a definite object with flat SVO order. A specific object needs 把 (or at least 放在…).

❌ 我放这本书在书架上。

Incorrect — a definite object being placed needs the 把 disposal frame.

✅ 我把这本书放在书架上。

wǒ bǎ zhè běn shū fàng zài shūjià shàng

I'll put this book on the shelf.

3. Treating 放心 as transitive with a person. 放心 is "set one's own mind at ease"; you don't 放心 someone.

❌ 我很放心你。

Incorrect — 放心 takes no direct person object.

✅ 你放心吧,我对你很放心。

nǐ fàngxīn ba, wǒ duì nǐ hěn fàngxīn

Don't worry — I have full confidence in you.

4. Failing to split the separable verb 放假. Duration goes inside, as 放…的假.

❌ 我们暑假放假两个月。

Incorrect — 放假 splits: the duration goes between 放 and 假.

✅ 我们暑假放两个月的假。

wǒmen shǔjià fàng liǎng ge yuè de jià

We get a two-month break over the summer.

Key Takeaways

  • 放 = "release / set down," and every sense flows from it: put down, let go, play (media), add (ingredient).
  • Placement uses the disposal frame 把 X 放在 place — the location is a complement after 放, never a coverb before it.
  • 放心 = "rest assured" (no person object); 放假 is a separable verb (放两周的假).
  • 放音乐 = play back a recording; 放盐 = add salt — the object tells you which "release" you mean.

  • The 把 Disposal ConstructionHSK 3把 (bǎ) pulls a definite object in front of the verb so the sentence can say what is DONE to it and how it ends up: 我把门关了 (I closed the door), 请把书放在桌子上 (put the book on the table). There's no English equivalent — 把 means 'take this specific thing and dispose of it thus.'
  • 拿 (ná) — take / hold / carry (in the hand)HSK 2拿 (ná) is the hands-on verb — grab, pick up, hold, fetch: 拿书, 拿着伞, 拿来, 拿走. It works as an instrument coverb (拿筷子吃) and hides in 拿手 'be good at'. The key contrast: you 拿 things in your hand, but 带 them along on a trip.
  • 在 (zài) — be at / progressive / -ingHSK 1在 (zài) is the verb 'be located at' (我在家), the location coverb that sits BEFORE the verb (在家吃饭), and the progressive marker 'be V-ing' (他在打电话) — three linked uses of one word.
