之 (zhī) is the most common surviving piece of classical grammar in modern Chinese, and it does two classical jobs at once. First, it is the literary equivalent of the attributive 的 — a compact "of" that links a modifier to a noun (中国之声 "the voice of China"). Second, it is a resumptive object pronoun meaning "it / them" (总之 "sum it up → in short"). You will meet 之 constantly in fractions, ratios, four-character idioms, and written connectives — but almost never in casual speech, where 的 and 它 have taken over. This page sorts the living uses so you can parse them at sight. For the wider literary family, see the classical particle residue overview.
之 as a compact, formal 的
In its attributive role, 之 does exactly what 的 does — it joins a modifier to the noun it modifies — but in a terser, more literary key. Countless set phrases and chengyu freeze this 之 in place. You don't build these fresh; you learn them whole.
这是一件无价之宝。
zhè shì yí jiàn wújià zhī bǎo
This is a priceless treasure. (literary / set phrase) — 无价之宝 = 'treasure of no price,' 之 = 的.
请助我一臂之力。
qǐng zhù wǒ yí bì zhī lì
Please lend me a hand. (formal) — 一臂之力 = 'the strength of one arm,' 之 = 的.
这项研究具有划时代之意义。
zhè xiàng yánjiū jùyǒu huàshídài zhī yìyì
This research is of epoch-making significance. (formal, written) — 之 as an elevated 的.
之 in fractions and ratios — a mechanical use
The one place every learner must handle 之 productively is fractions and percentages, built on the frame X 分之 Y = "Y out of X parts" = Y/X. The denominator comes first (before 分之), the numerator second. So 三分之一 is 1/3, 百分之五十 is 50%. Note that inside a fraction the numeral "two" is 二, not 两 — 三分之二 (2/3), because this is arithmetic, not counting before a measure word.
| Chinese | Structure | Value |
|---|---|---|
| 三分之一 (sān fēn zhī yī) | 3 分之 1 | 1/3 |
| 三分之二 (sān fēn zhī èr) | 3 分之 2 | 2/3 |
| 百分之五十 (bǎi fēn zhī wǔshí) | 100 分之 50 | 50% |
| 百分之九十 (bǎi fēn zhī jiǔshí) | 100 分之 90 | 90% |
三分之二的学生赞成这个决定。
sān fēn zhī èr de xuésheng zànchéng zhège juédìng
Two thirds of the students support this decision. (neutral) — denominator 三 first, numerator 二 after 分之.
百分之九十的受访者表示满意。
bǎi fēn zhī jiǔshí de shòufǎngzhě biǎoshì mǎnyì
Ninety percent of respondents said they were satisfied. (formal, survey register)
The mechanics live in full on the fractions page; here the point is simply that the 之 inside them is the same classical "of."
之 as the object "it / them"
Classical 之 was also a pronoun standing in for a preceding object — "it, him, them." This survives only inside fixed expressions, where 之 is the swallowed object of the verb. In 总之, the verb-ish 总 ("to sum up") takes 之 ("it") as its object: "sum it up" → "in short." In 求之不得, 求 ("seek") takes 之 ("it"): "seek it but can't get it."
总之,我们必须尽快行动。
zǒngzhī, wǒmen bìxū jǐnkuài xíngdòng
In short, we must act as soon as possible. (formal) — 总之 = 'to sum it up.'
这个职位很多人求之不得。
zhège zhíwèi hěn duō rén qiú zhī bù dé
This is a position many people would love but can't get. (neutral-formal) — 求之不得, 之 = 'it.'
他对这些批评置之不理。
tā duì zhèxiē pīpíng zhì zhī bù lǐ
He simply ignored all this criticism. (formal) — 置之不理 = 'set it aside and pay no heed,' 之 = 'it.'
Crucially, this 之 is not productive: you cannot say 我看之了 for "I saw it." Object-pronoun 之 only lives inside these frozen idioms; free "it" is 它 (or simply dropped).
之 in written connectives
A large family of formal connectives and position words is built on 之 — and here 之 behaves like the attributive "of" again, gluing a relational word to what follows: 之后 (after), 之前 (before), 之间 (between), 之中 (among), 之一 (one of), 之类 (and the like), plus the discourse hinges 反之 (conversely) and 换言之 (in other words). These are the backbone of written discourse connectors.
会议之后我们再详谈。
huìyì zhī hòu wǒmen zài xiángtán
We'll talk in detail after the meeting. (neutral-formal) — 之后 = 'after.'
这是全球最大的港口之一。
zhè shì quánqiú zuì dà de gǎngkǒu zhī yī
This is one of the largest ports in the world. (neutral) — 之一 = 'one of.'
反之,如果价格上涨,需求就会下降。
fǎnzhī, rúguǒ jiàgé shàngzhǎng, xūqiú jiù huì xiàjiàng
Conversely, if prices rise, demand will fall. (formal, academic) — 反之 = 'turn it around → conversely.'
Common Mistakes
1. Using 之 for 的 in casual speech. 之 is written / frozen; everyday possession is 的.
❌ 这是我之钱包。
Over-formal / wrong in speech — say 这是我的钱包 for 'this is my wallet.'
✅ 这是我的钱包。
zhè shì wǒ de qiánbāo
This is my wallet. (neutral) — everyday possessive is 的.
2. Inverting the fraction. The denominator comes before 分之, the numerator after. English order (numerator first) produces the wrong number.
❌ 一分之三
Wrong for 'one third' — this reads 3/1 = 3. Put the denominator first: 三分之一.
✅ 三分之一
sān fēn zhī yī
one third (1/3) — denominator 三 before 分之, numerator 一 after.
3. Using 两 instead of 二 inside a fraction. Fractions are arithmetic, so the numeral is 二, not the measure-word 两.
❌ 三分之两
Wrong — inside a fraction 'two' is 二, not 两: 三分之二.
✅ 三分之二
sān fēn zhī èr
two thirds (2/3) — fractions take 二.
4. Treating object-pronoun 之 as productive. 之 = "it" survives only in set idioms; you can't drop it into a fresh sentence.
❌ 我看之了。
Wrong — you can't use classical 之 as a free object 'it.' Say 我看到它了 or just 我看到了.
✅ 我看到了。
wǒ kàndào le
I saw it. (neutral) — modern Chinese drops the object or uses 它, not 之.
Key Takeaways
- 之 (zhī) is the classical "of" (= 的) and object "it / them", surviving in fixed phrases and written Chinese, rarely in speech.
- As "of," it freezes into set phrases and chengyu: 无价之宝, 一臂之力; you can paraphrase with 的 but keep 之 when quoting the idiom.
- In fractions, the frame is X 分之 Y (denominator first, numerator second) — and the numeral is 二, not 两.
- As object "it," 之 lives only in idioms (总之, 求之不得, 置之不理); it is not a free pronoun — use 它 or drop it.
- 之 also builds written connectives — 之后, 之前, 之一, 反之, 换言之 — the skeleton of formal discourse.

- Classical Particle Residue in Modern ChineseBeyond — The literary particles 之 / 其 / 所 / 者 / 也 / 乎 / 矣 / 焉 survive in modern Chinese as frozen residue — inside fixed phrases, formal writing, names, and 成语 (chengyu): 三分之一, 其中, 所以, 记者, 心不在焉. You recognize them, you don't compose freely with them.
- Fractions (三分之一)HSK 3 — Chinese states fractions denominator-first with the frame X 分之 Y ('of X parts, Y'): 三分之一 = 1/3, 四分之三 = 3/4. The order is the exact reverse of English, and 之 is the classical 'of'.
- 的 as Attributive / PossessiveHSK 1 — 的 (de) is the all-purpose linker that ties a modifier to the noun it describes — possession (我的书), a noun's property (老师的话), an adjective (漂亮的花) or a whole phrase (很贵的东西): modifier + 的 + noun.
