呗 (Resignation / 'Obviously, So Just…')

(bei, neutral tone) is the sound of a shrug. It closes a sentence with the attitude "well, obviously — so just do that," or "eh, that's just how it is." If you can't do something, 不会就学呗 "then just learn it, duh"; if there's no money, 没钱就别买呗 "then just don't buy it." The particle wraps the whole clause in easygoing resignation: the answer is so obvious, or the situation so unchangeable, that there is nothing to agonise over. English has no single word for this — we reach for a tone of voice plus a filler: "well, just…", "then obviously…", "eh, whatever." 呗 is strongly colloquial and distinctly northern (Beijing and the north-east), so hearing it or using it well is a quick way to sound like an insider rather than a textbook.

The "so just do it" 呗: the obvious easy answer

The commonest 呗 offers up the easy, obvious solution to a small problem — and it almost always follows a 就-clause that names that solution. The structure is [if such-and-such] 就 [do the obvious thing] 呗: the sets up "then simply," and 呗 stamps it "…it's not complicated."

不懂就问呗,没人会笑话你。

bù dǒng jiù wèn bei, méi rén huì xiàohua nǐ

If you don't get it, just ask — nobody's going to laugh at you. (informal) — the obvious solution, framed as no big deal.

不会就学呗,谁天生就会啊。

bú huì jiù xué bei, shéi tiānshēng jiù huì a

If you can't do it, just learn — nobody's born knowing how. (informal) — 呗 says 'obviously', 啊 adds the warm rhetorical push.

累了就休息呗,别硬撑。

lèi le jiù xiūxi bei, bié yìng chēng

If you're tired, just rest — don't push through it. (informal) — offering the easy fix with a shrug.

你想去就去呗,又没人拦你。

nǐ xiǎng qù jiù qù bei, yòu méi rén lán nǐ

If you want to go, then just go — it's not like anyone's stopping you. (informal).

💡
呗 is the particle of the obvious solution, but its obviousness is a shrug, not a push. When you want to actively coax someone — "come on, just help him" — you want 嘛 instead (see ). 你帮帮他嘛 nudges; 你帮帮他呗 says "eh, just help him then, no big deal." Same "obviously," opposite energy: 嘛 leans in, 呗 leans back.

The shrug: "that's just how it is"

The second flavour of 呗 is pure resignation. Here there's no neat solution — the situation simply is what it is, so you accept it and move on. This is the take-it-or-leave-it 呗, often after 就这样 "so, like this" or 反正 "anyway."

反正也没别的办法,就这样呗。

fǎnzhèng yě méi bié de bànfǎ, jiù zhèyàng bei

There's no other way anyway, so that's just how it'll be. (informal) — flat acceptance.

他不来就算了呗,我们照样玩。

tā bù lái jiù suàn le bei, wǒmen zhàoyàng wán

If he's not coming, then forget it — we'll have fun all the same. (informal) — writing off a small loss.

大不了重做呗,又不是天塌下来。

dà bù liǎo chóng zuò bei, yòu bú shì tiān tā xiàlai

Worst case we just redo it — it's not the end of the world. (informal) — 大不了…呗 shrugs off the downside.

爱去不去,不去就拉倒呗。

ài qù bú qù, bú qù jiù lādǎo bei

Go or don't, suit yourself — if you're not going, then just drop it. (informal, a touch blunt).

This is why 呗 often answers a worried 怎么办 "what do we do?" with a calm dismissal:

能怎么办,只能等呗。

néng zěnme bàn, zhǐ néng děng bei

What can you do — all we can do is wait. (informal) — resignation to the unavoidable.

呗 vs its neighbours 嘛 and 啦

The three casual particles all say something like "obviously," but they point in different emotional directions. Keeping them apart is what makes each land right.

ParticleAttitudeExample
呗 (bei)shrug / resignation / "so just…"不喜欢就别去呗 ("then just don't go")
嘛 (ma)persuasive obviousness / mild protest — leans in你就陪我去嘛 ("come on, just come with me")
啦 (la)cheerful update, = 了 + 啊 (see )好啦,我知道啦 ("okay okay, I get it")

不喜欢就别去呗,何必勉强自己。

bù xǐhuan jiù bié qù bei, hébì miǎnqiǎng zìjǐ

If you don't like it, then just don't go — why force yourself. (informal) — 呗 shrugs the decision off.

💡
呗 is register-locked to casual speech — chat with friends, family, texting. It never appears in formal writing, a report, or a polite request to a stranger, and it doesn't soften anything: adding 呗 to a request makes it more offhand ("eh, just do it"), not more polite. If you want polite softening, that's 吧, not 呗.

Common Mistakes

1. Using 呗 in formal or written contexts. 呗 is markedly colloquial and northern; in an email, an essay, or to someone you're being polite with, it clangs.

❌ 若有疑问,直接询问呗。

Register clash — 呗 is chatty; formal prose drops it: 若有疑问,请直接询问。

✅ 有问题就直接问呗。

yǒu wèntí jiù zhíjiē wèn bei

If you've got a question, just ask — casual, among friends. (informal).

2. Confusing 呗's shrug with 嘛's coaxing. 嘛 pushes ("come on, do it"); 呗 shrugs ("eh, just do it then"). Swapping them flips the tone.

❌ 你就帮帮我呗!(when actively pleading)

Off — active pleading wants 嘛: 你就帮帮我嘛! 呗 would make it sound like you barely care.

✅ 你就帮帮我嘛!

nǐ jiù bāngbang wǒ ma

Come on, just help me out! (informal) — 嘛 leans in to coax.

3. Treating 呗 as a question particle. 呗 dismisses; it does not ask. For a real yes/no question use .

❌ 你去不去呗?

Wrong — 呗 isn't a question particle. To ask, use 吗 (你去吗?) or A-not-A (你去不去?).

✅ 你去就去呗,别磨蹭了。

nǐ qù jiù qù bei, bié móceng le

If you're going, just go — quit dawdling. (informal) — 呗 dismisses, doesn't question.

4. Expecting 呗 to soften a request. It's a shrug particle, not a politeness marker. To soften, reach for 吧.

❌ 帮我拿一下呗。(to a stranger, meaning to be polite)

Too offhand for a stranger — 呗 sounds 'eh, just grab it for me'. Polite softening is 吧: 帮我拿一下吧。

✅ 帮我拿一下吧。

bāng wǒ ná yíxià ba

Could you grab that for me? (neutral-polite) — 吧 softens; 呗 would sound careless.

Key Takeaways

  • (bei) closes a sentence with an easygoing shrug: "well, obviously — so just…" or "eh, that's just how it is."
  • The "obvious solution" 呗 rides on a 就-clause: 不懂就问呗, 不会就学呗 — "then simply do the obvious thing, no big deal."
  • The "resignation" 呗 accepts an unchangeable situation: 就这样呗, 能怎么办,只能等呗.
  • It leans back where 嘛 leans in: 帮帮他呗 (shrug) vs 帮帮他嘛 (coax).
  • Register is strictly casual and northern; 呗 never goes in formal writing, never asks a question, and never softens a request — that's 吧's job.
