Slip 并 (bìng) in front of a negator — 并不 or 并没(有) — and you turn a flat "not" into an emphatic, argument-making one: "not, contrary to what you think." 这并不难 isn't just "this isn't hard"; it's "this isn't hard at all — despite how it looks." The tricky part for English speakers is that 并 barely translates as a word. It doesn't mean "very" or "really" in the dictionary sense; it marks a stance — the speaker is pushing back against a belief, claim, or impression that the opposite is true. Learning to hear that implied "you assumed X, but actually…" is the whole game. This is why 并 shows up so much in careful speech, clarifications, and writing (formal), where setting the record straight matters.
What 并 adds: a rebuttal, not a meaning
Think of 并 as a small flag planted before the negator that says: "someone believes, expects, or implied the opposite — and I'm correcting that." The bare negative simply reports a fact; the 并-version answers a mistaken assumption.
这道题看起来复杂,其实并不难。
zhè dào tí kànqǐlai fùzá, qíshí bìng bù nán
This problem looks complicated, but it's actually not hard at all. (neutral) — 并不 rebuts the impression that it's hard.
我并不介意,你别放在心上。
wǒ bìng bú jièyì, nǐ bié fàng zài xīn shàng
I really don't mind — don't take it to heart. (informal) — rebuts the listener's worry that you're upset.
事情并不像你想的那么简单。
shìqíng bìng bú xiàng nǐ xiǎng de nàme jiǎndān
Things aren't as simple as you think. (neutral) — directly corrects the other person's assumption.
并不 vs 并没(有): pick by the same rule as 不 vs 没
并 doesn't change which negator you need — it rides on top of the normal 不 vs 没 split. Use 并不 for qualities, states, habits, the copula 是, and modal verbs; use 并没(有) for completed or experienced actions and for 有.
| Form | Negates | Rebuts a belief about… | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| 并不 | quality, state, habit, 是, modals | how things are | 并不难 (isn't hard at all) |
| 并没(有) | completed / experienced action, 有 | what happened | 并没说过 (never said that) |
他嘴上答应了,心里并不愿意。
tā zuǐ shàng dāying le, xīnlǐ bìng bú yuànyì
He agreed out loud, but deep down he wasn't willing at all. (neutral) — 并不 negates the state 愿意.
你放心,我并没告诉别人。
nǐ fàngxīn, wǒ bìng méi gàosu biérén
Don't worry — I didn't tell anyone. (informal) — 并没 rebuts a suspicion about a completed action.
我并没说过这样的话。
wǒ bìng méi shuō guo zhèyàng de huà
I never said anything like that. (neutral, firm) — 并没 pushes back against a claim about what you said.
When NOT to use 并
Because 并 presupposes a contrary belief, dropping it into a neutral statement makes you sound defensive or argumentative for no reason. 今天不冷 is a plain "it's not cold today"; 今天并不冷 implies "you expected it to be cold — well, it isn't." If nobody thought otherwise, the second version is odd.
今天并不冷,用不着穿羽绒服。
jīntiān bìng bù lěng, yòng bu zháo chuān yǔróngfú
It's really not cold today — no need for a down jacket. (informal) — 并 works here because it rebuts the assumption that it's cold.
This also separates 并不 from 不太 (bú tài, "not very"). 不太 softens — it's the polite, hedging negative you use to decline gently (不太 polite negation). 并不 does the opposite: it insists, correcting an error. 我不太喜欢 ("I don't really like it") is gentle; 我并不喜欢 ("I actually don't like it — whatever you assumed") is pointed.
并不是, and the other 并
Put 并 before the copula 是 and you get 并不是 — "it's actually not (that)…", the emphatic, record-straightening version of the 不是 correction. It rebuts a mistaken identification just as 并不 rebuts a mistaken quality.
这并不是你的错,你别自责了。
zhè bìng bú shì nǐ de cuò, nǐ bié zìzé le
This really isn't your fault — stop blaming yourself. (informal) — 并不是 firmly overturns the assumption of blame.
One caution: 并 leads a completely separate life as a conjunction, 并 / 并且 (bìng / bìngqiě, "and, moreover"), which links verbs or clauses. That 并 has nothing to do with negation — the rebuttal 并 only ever appears directly before 不 or 没.
他学习努力,并且成绩很好。
tā xuéxí nǔlì, bìngqiě chéngjì hěn hǎo
He studies hard, and his grades are excellent. (neutral) — here 并且 means 'and'; it is NOT the negating 并.
Common Mistakes
1. Pairing 并 with the wrong negator. 并 rides on the normal 不/没 choice — a completed action still needs 没, not 不.
❌ 这件事我并不做。
Incorrect for 'I didn't do it' — a completed action takes 没: 并没做.
✅ 这件事我并没做。
zhè jiàn shì wǒ bìng méi zuò
I didn't do this — contrary to what you think. — 并没 for the completed action.
2. Putting 并 in the wrong slot. 并 sits right before the negator, after the subject — never at the head of the clause.
❌ 并我不知道这件事。
Incorrect — 并 attaches to the negator: 我并不知道这件事.
✅ 我并不知道这件事。
wǒ bìng bù zhīdào zhè jiàn shì
I really didn't know about this. — 并 directly before 不.
3. Using 并 where there's no contrary belief. Without an assumption to rebut, 并 sounds combative.
❌ 我并不喜欢咖啡,我喜欢茶。
Odd — if no one implied you like coffee, 并 sounds defensive; just say 我不喜欢咖啡.
✅ 我不喜欢咖啡,我喜欢茶。
wǒ bù xǐhuān kāfēi, wǒ xǐhuān chá
I don't like coffee — I like tea. — a plain preference needs no 并.
4. Confusing 并不 (rebuttal) with 不太 (softening). They pull in opposite directions — one insists, one hedges.
❌ 谢谢,我并不饿。
Too blunt when politely declining food — 并不 rebuts rather than softens; say 我不太饿.
✅ 谢谢,我不太饿。
xièxie, wǒ bú tài è
Thanks, I'm not really hungry. — 不太 softens the refusal politely.
Key Takeaways
- 并 marks a stance, not a dictionary meaning: "contrary to what you think / to set the record straight."
- It presupposes a contrary belief, claim, or impression — use it to rebut, not to state neutral facts.
- 并不 for qualities/states/modals (并不难), 并没(有) for completed actions and 有 (并没说过) — the normal 不/没 split still applies.
- 并 sits right before the negator, after the subject: 我并不知道.
- Don't confuse the insisting 并不 with the softening 不太 — opposite jobs.

- 不 or 没? Habitual vs Completed ActionHSK 2 — The make-or-break negation choice: 不 negates a habit, intention, or quality (我不喝酒 'I don't drink'), while 没 negates a specific event that failed to happen (我没喝酒 'I didn't drink [that time]'). Sort by meaning, not by English 'don't' vs 'didn't'.

- 不太 (bú tài): Not Very (Polite Understatement)HSK 2 — 不太 (bú tài) literally 'not too', but in real speech it's a face-saving hedge meaning 'not very / not really': 我不太喜欢 'I don't really like it', 不太清楚 'I'm not quite sure', 味道不太好 'the food's not great'. It softens a blunt 不 into gentle understatement — and it is NOT the mirror image of 太…了.
