台 (Machines & Appliances)

(tái) is the classifier of the machine age. Its core image is a powered apparatus — a substantial electronic or mechanical device that sits on a surface and does work: a computer, a television, a fridge, an air conditioner, an industrial machine. English has no grammatical counterpart; we just say "a computer," "a TV." But Chinese sorts these devices into their own class, and reaching for 台 instead of the all-purpose is one of the clearest signs that a learner has moved past the beginner stage. The character 台 literally means "platform / stand," and that is the picture to hold: a piece of equipment mounted on its base, ready to run.

The "apparatus" image

If a thing plugs in, has a motor or a circuit board, and is big enough to sit on a table or the floor, it almost certainly takes 台. Once you see the category as "powered equipment," the membership list stops feeling like a list to memorise:

NounWith 台Meaning
电脑 (diànnǎo)一台电脑 (yì tái diànnǎo)a computer
电视 (diànshì)一台电视 (yì tái diànshì)a TV set
冰箱 (bīngxiāng)一台冰箱 (yì tái bīngxiāng)a refrigerator
空调 (kōngtiáo)一台空调 (yì tái kōngtiáo)an air conditioner
洗衣机 (xǐyījī)一台洗衣机 (yì tái xǐyījī)a washing machine
机器 (jīqì)一台机器 (yì tái jīqì)a machine
打印机 (dǎyìnjī)一台打印机 (yì tái dǎyìnjī)a printer
服务器 (fúwùqì)一台服务器 (yì tái fúwùqì)a server

Our computer is too old — I want to buy a new one. (informal) — 电脑 is the prototypical 台 device.

kètīng li bǎi zhe yì tái hěn dà de diànshì

There's a big TV set up in the living room. (neutral) — appliances take 台, not 个.

zhè tái xǐyījī yòu huài le, shīfu míngtiān lái xiū

This washing machine has broken down again — the repairman is coming tomorrow. (informal).

💡
Quick test for 台: "Does it plug in, have a motor or a screen, and sit on a surface or the floor?" Computers, TVs, fridges, printers, cameras, factory machines — all yes. If it's a big powered device, reach for 台 before 个.

From one machine to a room full of them

Because 台 counts discrete units of equipment, it scales naturally from a single household appliance to a whole factory floor:

办公室新装了两台空调,夏天终于不热了。

bàngōngshì xīn zhuāng le liǎng tái kōngtiáo, xiàtiān zhōngyú bú rè le

The office just had two air conditioners installed — summers finally aren't hot anymore. (informal) — note 两台, not 二台.

gōngchǎng li yǒu jǐshí tái jīqì zài tóngshí yùnzhuǎn

There are dozens of machines running at the factory at the same time. (neutral).

Your fridge is empty — isn't it time to swap it for a bigger one? (informal).

台 for staged performances

By a nice extension of the "platform / stage" root, 台 also counts a whole staged production — a variety gala, an opera, a theatrical evening treated as one unified show mounted on a stage. This is a fixed, idiomatic use worth recognising:

村里今晚有一台大戏,全村人都去看。

cūn li jīnwǎn yǒu yì tái dà xì, quán cūn rén dōu qù kàn

There's a big opera performance in the village tonight — the whole village is going to watch. (neutral) — 一台戏 = one staged show.

chūnjié wǎnhuì shì yì tái fēicháng rènao de yǎnchū

The Spring Festival gala is a very lively show. (neutral) — a whole gala is 一台.

台 vs 部 vs 辆 — dividing up the gadgets

Three neighbouring classifiers split the world of devices and vehicles, and mixing them up is the usual stumbling block. The dividing lines are worth committing to memory:

ObjectClassifierWhy
一台电脑 (a computer)large powered apparatus
一部手机 (a mobile phone)部 (not 台)handheld device / produced work — see 部
一部电影 (a film)部 (not 台)a complete produced work
一辆汽车 (a car)辆 (not 台)a wheeled vehicle — see 辆

The cleanest contrast is the computer versus the phone. A desktop or laptop is 一台电脑, but the phone in your pocket is 一部手机 (or colloquially 一个) — Chinese groups the handheld phone with films and other "produced works," not with the big machines. Get this pair right and you have the 台/部 boundary. For wheeled machines like cars and buses, the classifier is 辆 (liàng); see 辆 for vehicles.

zhuō shang fàng zhe yì tái diànnǎo hé yí bù shǒujī

There's a computer and a phone on the desk. (neutral) — 台 for the computer, 部 for the phone, side by side.

Common Mistakes

1. Defaulting to 个 for appliances. 个 will be understood, but for big powered devices it sounds distinctly unpolished — a native speaker says 一台电视, not 一个电视.

Marginal — a computer is a machine; native speakers say

wǒ xiǎng mǎi yì tái diànnǎo

I want to buy a computer. — 台 is the natural classifier for a computer.

2. Using 台 for a mobile phone. A phone belongs with 部, not 台. 台 is for the big stationary equipment; the handheld phone is 一部手机.

Incorrect — a phone takes 部 (or colloquial 个), not 台: 一部手机.

tā gāng mǎi le yí bù shǒujī

He just bought a phone. — 部 for a handheld phone.

3. Using 台 for a car. A car rolls on wheels and takes 辆, not 台. 台 is for machines that sit and run in place.

Incorrect — a car is a wheeled vehicle: 一辆车, not 一台车.

mén kǒu tíng zhe yí liàng chē

There's a car parked at the entrance. — 辆 for vehicles.

4. Using 二 instead of 两 before 台. For "two" in front of a measure word, it is always 两, never 二.

Incorrect — before a measure word 'two' is 两, not 二.

liǎng tái kōngtiáo

two air conditioners — 两台, not 二台.

Key Takeaways

  • (tái) classifies big powered machines, appliances and equipment: 电脑 (computers), 电视 (TVs), 冰箱 (fridges), 空调 (air conditioners), 洗衣机 (washing machines), 机器 (machines), 打印机 (printers).
  • The image is a platform-mounted apparatus — if it plugs in, has a motor or a screen, and sits on a surface, it takes 台.
  • By extension it counts a whole staged performance: 一台戏 (an opera), 一台晚会 (a gala).
  • Keep the boundaries sharp: 一台电脑 but 一部手机 and 一部电影 (); wheeled vehicles are 一辆 ().
  • Use , not 二, for "two": 两台空调.
