More High-Frequency Radicals (日月火土辶宀刂)

Once you know a handful of top radicalsperson, woman, tree — a second tier pays off almost as fast. This page tours seven of them at a brisk pace. Each is a meaning neighborhood: spot it, and you have narrowed what the character is about. Two of them, 辶 and 宀, hide inside so many HSK1 words that recognizing them will change how quickly you read.

日 — the sun / day radical

日 (rì) is a picture of the sun; on its own it means "sun" or "day." As a radical it flags things about the sun, light, and time. It usually sits on the left or top.

CharacterMeaningThe logic
时 (shí)time / hour日 sun + 寸 — telling time by the sun
明 (míng)bright / tomorrow日 sun + 月 moon — the two brightest lights
早 (zǎo)early / morning日 sun rising over the horizon
晚 (wǎn)late / evening日 sun + 免 (sound)

明天早上我们几点见?

míngtiān zǎoshang wǒmen jǐ diǎn jiàn

Tomorrow morning, what time shall we meet? (明 'bright/tomorrow' = 日 sun + 月 moon; 早 'morning' is the sun over the horizon)

月 — the moon and the flesh radical (the big one)

Here is the radical that catches everyone, so it gets the most space. The shape 月 does double duty:

  1. Moon 月 (yuè) — the actual moon, and by extension "month." This is the source in 朋 (péng, "friend") and time words.
  2. Flesh ⺼ — a completely different radical that happens to have merged into the same printed shape. It is a picture of a slab of meat, and it marks body parts and the physical body.

This is why the body-part vocabulary is riddled with 月 that has nothing to do with the moon:

"Moon" 月"Flesh" ⺼
朋 (péng) friend脸 (liǎn) face
月 (yuè) month胃 (wèi) stomach
明 (míng) bright脚 (jiǎo) foot
期 (qī) period胖 (pàng) fat / plump

我朋友昨天扭伤了脚。

wǒ péngyou zuótiān niǔshāng le jiǎo

My friend twisted their foot yesterday. (朋 'friend' carries the moon 月; 脚 'foot' carries the flesh ⺼ — same printed shape, two different radicals)

他最近胖了一点,脸都圆了。

tā zuìjìn pàng le yìdiǎn, liǎn dōu yuán le

He's put on a little weight lately — his face has gone round. (胖 'plump' and 脸 'face' both carry the flesh 月 — body words)

💡
Rule of thumb: when 月 sits on the left of a character about the body, read it as flesh (脸, 胃, 脚, 胖, 肚, 腿). When it stands alone or means light/time, it's the moon. The historical merger is real — don't fight it, just remember body words wear "flesh," and it will save you from mis-guessing the meaning family.

火 / 灬 — the fire radical

火 (huǒ) is a pictograph of flames. It appears full-size on the left (灯 dēng "lamp," 烧 shāo "burn"), and — crucially — as four little dots 灬 on the bottom, its "fire-underneath" form. Those four dots mean heat rising from a fire below.

CharacterMeaningFire form
灯 (dēng)lamp / light火 on the left
烧 (shāo)to burn / cook火 on the left
热 (rè)hot灬 four dots below
点 (diǎn)dot / o'clock / to light灬 four dots below

小心,锅很热!

xiǎoxīn, guō hěn rè

Careful, the pot is hot! (热 rè 'hot' — the four dots 灬 at the bottom are fire underneath)

土 — the earth radical

土 (tǔ) means "earth / soil / ground," a little mound of dirt on the ground line. It marks land, ground, and structures built from earth.

CharacterMeaningThe logic
地 (dì)ground / earth土 earth + 也 (sound)
坐 (zuò)to sittwo 人 sitting on the 土 ground
城 (chéng)city wall / city土 earth + 成 — walls of rammed earth
场 (chǎng)a field / open ground土 earth + phonetic

你坐在地上不冷吗?

nǐ zuò zài dì shàng bù lěng ma

Aren't you cold sitting on the ground? (坐 'sit' is two people on the 土 earth; 地 'ground' carries 土)

辶 — the movement radical (walking)

Now one of the two highest-payoff radicals on this page. 辶 (chuò), nicknamed the 走之旁 (zǒuzhīpáng, "the walking side"), is a stylized picture of a foot on a road. It wraps around the bottom-left of a character and marks movement, travel, and roads. It sits under a huge share of HSK1 words:

CharacterMeaningCharacterMeaning
这 (zhè)this过 (guò)to pass / cross
边 (biān)side进 (jìn)to enter
远 (yuǎn)far近 (jìn)near
道 (dào)road / way还 (hái)still / also

这条路我走过很多遍了。

zhè tiáo lù wǒ zǒu guò hěn duō biàn le

I've walked this road many times. (这 'this', 过 'pass', and 遍 'a time/round' all carry the movement radical 辶)

💡
The movement radical is written last, even though it ends up on the left — you draw the inside component first, then sweep the 辶 around the bottom. That is the opposite of true left-side radicals like 亻 or 木, which you write first. If you write 辶 first, the character comes out cramped.

宀 — the roof radical

宀 (mián), the 宝盖头 (ogàitóu, "treasure-cover top"), is a picture of a roof with walls. It caps a character from above and marks buildings, rooms, and being indoors.

CharacterMeaningUnder the roof
家 (jiā)home / family宀 roof over 豕 (a pig) — the household
字 (zì)written character宀 roof over 子 (child)
安 (ān)peace / safe宀 roof over 女 (woman) — settled at home
客 (kè)guest宀 roof + 各 — someone under your roof

我一个人在家,你过来吧。

wǒ yí ge rén zài jiā, nǐ guòlái ba

I'm home alone — come on over. (家 'home' is a household under the roof radical 宀)

刂 — the knife radical

刂 is the compressed side form of 刀 (dāo, "knife"), standing on the right of a character. It marks cutting, dividing, and sharp actions.

CharacterMeaningThe logic
别 (bié)don't / otherto divide off → separate → "don't"
刻 (kè)to carve / a quarter-hour亥 + 刂 knife — cutting into stone
利 (lì)sharp / profit禾 grain + 刂 knife — harvesting
到 (dào)to arrive至 arrive + 刂 (here a sound clue)

你别走,再等我一下。

nǐ bié zǒu, zài děng wǒ yíxià

Don't go — wait for me a moment. (别 bié 'don't' carries the knife radical 刂 on the right, from 'to divide off')

Common Mistakes

1. Missing the "flesh" sense of 月. Body-part characters wear 月 as flesh, not moon.

❌ Reading the 月 in 脸 (liǎn 'face') as the moon.

Incorrect — the 月 on the left of body words (脸 face, 胃 stomach, 脚 foot) is the flesh radical ⺼, which merged into the same printed shape as 'moon.'

✅ 脸、胃、脚里的“月”是“肉”,不是月亮。

liǎn, wèi, jiǎo lǐ de yuè shì ròu, bú shì yuèliang

The 月 in 'face,' 'stomach,' and 'foot' is 'flesh,' not the moon — body words all carry it.

2. Assuming the four dots 灬 always mean fire. Usually yes — but not always.

❌ Reading the four dots under 鱼 (yú 'fish') as fire.

Incorrect — in 鱼 'fish' and 燕 'swallow (bird)', the bottom strokes are the tail, not the fire radical. In 热, 点, 煮 they are fire; check the character.

✅ 热的“灬”是火,鱼的“灬”是尾巴。

rè de huǒ shì huǒ, yú de huǒ shì wěiba

The four dots in 'hot' are fire; the four dots in 'fish' are the tail. Same shape, different origin.

3. Writing the movement radical 辶 first. It wraps the bottom and is written last.

❌ Drawing the 辶 of 这 (zhè) before the inside component.

Incorrect — for 辶 characters, write the inside first, then sweep 辶 around the bottom-left last. Writing it first cramps the character.

✅ 先写“文”,再写“辶”,才是“这”。

xiān xiě wén, zài xiě chuò, cái shì zhè

Write the inside (文) first, then the movement radical 辶 — that's the correct order for 这 'this.'

4. Assuming a visible component is the filing radical. A character has exactly one filing radical, and it may not be the one you'd pick.

❌ Filing 明 (míng) under 月 because you see a moon on the right.

Incorrect — 明 contains both 日 and 月, but dictionaries file it under 日 (the sun). A component you can see isn't automatically the filing radical.

✅ 明有日也有月,但归在“日”部。

míng yǒu rì yě yǒu yuè, dàn guī zài rì bù

明 has both a sun and a moon, but it's filed under the sun radical 日 — one filing radical per character.

Key Takeaways

  • (sun/day) → time and light: 时, 明, 早, 晚.
  • does double duty — moon (朋, 期) and flesh (脸, 胃, 脚, 胖). Body-part words wear the flesh sense; this is the trap to remember.
  • 火 / 灬 (fire) → 灯, 烧 on the left, and four dots below in 热, 点 — but 灬 isn't always fire (鱼's is a tail).
  • (earth) → ground and built things: 地, 坐, 城, 场.
  • (movement) hides in HSK1 gold — 这, 过, 进, 远, 近 — and is written last.
  • (roof) → indoors: 家, 字, 安, 客. (knife) → cutting/dividing: 别, 刻, 利.
