左 (zuǒ) "left" and 右 (yòu) "right" behave differently from localizers like 上 or 里. Where 上/里 happily attach straight to a noun (桌子上, 书里), the single characters 左/右 almost never stand alone as a location — they live inside compounds (左手 "left hand," 右转 "turn right"), and to name the place "on the left / on the right" you reach for the two-syllable 左边 (zuǒbian) and 右边 (yòubian). For English speakers the trap is treating 左/右 like free-standing prepositional objects ("it's on the left") and forgetting they need the 边 suffix — and, when modifying a noun, an extra 的.
左边 / 右边 as the place
To say something is on the left or on the right, use 左边 / 右边 after 在 or 有. The 边 is what turns the bare direction into a noun-like position word you can point to.
银行在马路左边。
yínháng zài mǎlù zuǒbian
The bank is on the left side of the road. (neutral)
洗手间在右边,你看到了吗?
xǐshǒujiān zài yòubian, nǐ kàndào le ma?
The restroom is on the right — do you see it? (informal)
他坐在我左边。
tā zuò zài wǒ zuǒbian
He's sitting on my left. (informal)
To modify a following noun, add 的: 左边的房间 "the room on the left." Without 的, the two nouns just collide.
左边这条路更近。
zuǒbian zhè tiáo lù gèng jìn
The road on the left is closer. (informal) — here 这条路 is demonstrative, so 的 is optional.
你要左边的还是右边的?
nǐ yào zuǒbian de háishì yòubian de?
Do you want the left one or the right one? (informal) — 左边的 = 'the left one', 的 nominalizes.
Bare 左/右 in motion and compounds
The single characters do appear alone — but bound into fixed compounds and, crucially, after the direction coverbs 往 (wǎng) / 向 (xiàng) "toward" when you give directions. Motion "to the left / to the right" is 往左 / 往右 (or 向左 / 向右) + verb.
到了红绿灯往右拐。
dào le hónglǜdēng wǎng yòu guǎi
Turn right at the traffic light. (informal)
向左看,那就是我家。
xiàng zuǒ kàn, nà jiùshì wǒ jiā
Look to the left — that's my house. (informal)
请举起你的右手。
qǐng jǔ qǐ nǐ de yòushǒu
Please raise your right hand. (neutral) — 右手 is a fixed compound.
左右 = "approximately"
Put 左 and 右 together after a number or quantity and the meaning shifts entirely: 左右 (zuǒyòu) becomes "approximately, or so, about." It literally evokes "a little to the left or right" of the figure. This is one of the most common ways to hedge a number in everyday speech.
我们六点左右到,行吗?
wǒmen liù diǎn zuǒyòu dào, xíng ma?
We'll get there around six, is that okay? (informal)
这件衣服一百块左右。
zhè jiàn yīfu yìbǎi kuài zuǒyòu
This piece of clothing is about a hundred kuai. (informal)
| Form | Reading | Use |
|---|---|---|
| 左边 / 右边 | zuǒbian / yòubian | the place "on the left / right" |
| 左边的 + noun | zuǒbian de … | modifying a noun ("the left one / room") |
| 往左 / 往右 + verb | wǎng zuǒ / wǎng yòu … | motion "to the left / right" |
| 左手 / 右手, 左转 / 右转 | zuǒshǒu / yòuzhuǎn … | bare 左/右 in fixed compounds |
| number + 左右 | … zuǒyòu | "approximately, about" |
Common Mistakes
1. Using bare 左/右 as a standalone place. "It's on the left" needs 左边, not 左.
❌ 银行在左。
Incorrect — the standalone place is 左边: 银行在左边.
✅ 银行在左边。
yínháng zài zuǒbian
The bank is on the left.
2. Dropping 的 when modifying a noun with 左边/右边. Two bare nouns can't just sit side by side here.
❌ 我要左边房间。
Incorrect — insert 的: 左边的房间.
✅ 我要左边的房间。
wǒ yào zuǒbian de fángjiān
I want the room on the left.
3. Putting 左右 before the number. For "approximately," 左右 follows the quantity.
❌ 左右三点我们出发。
Incorrect — 'about three o'clock' is 三点左右.
✅ 三点左右我们出发。
sān diǎn zuǒyòu wǒmen chūfā
We'll set off around three.
4. Using 在 + 左/右 for motion. Direction of movement uses 往/向, not 在.
❌ 在左拐就到了。
Incorrect — motion 'turn left' uses 往/向: 往左拐.
✅ 往左拐就到了。
wǎng zuǒ guǎi jiù dào le
Turn left and you're there.
Key Takeaways
- To name the place "on the left / right," use 左边 / 右边 — the bare characters 左/右 rarely stand alone as a location.
- Add 的 when 左边/右边 modifies a noun: 左边的房间, and 左边的 = "the left one."
- Motion uses 往左 / 往右 (or 向左/向右) + verb: 往右拐 "turn right."
- Bare 左/右 live in fixed compounds: 左手, 右手, 左转, 右转.
- After a number, 左右 flips to mean "approximately": 三点左右 "around three," 一百块左右 "about a hundred."

- 往 (wǎng): Toward (Direction of Motion)HSK 2 — 往 (wǎng) sets the heading of a movement — 往前走 'walk forward', 往左拐 'turn left', 往北开 'drive north'. It points the way without asserting arrival (that's 到), and often takes a bare direction word.
