以上 / 以下 / 以内 / 之间: Formal Ranges

Once you leave everyday speech and start reading rules, price tags, statistics and official notices, you meet a small family of formal localizers that bound a number or a reference point: 以上 (yǐshàng, above / over / and up), 以下 (yǐxià, below / under), 以内 (yǐnèi, within), 以外 (yǐwài, beyond / outside), and 之间 (zhījiān, between). Two facts organise the whole set. First, they behave like ordinary localizers such as 上 and 里 — they trail the word they bound (三十岁以上, not 以上三十岁), the mirror image of English "over thirty." Second, 以上 and 以下 *include the boundary number by convention, a quiet trap English speakers walk into constantly. Register throughout is formal / written — regulations, forms, timetables, signage.

The 以-series: bounding a single number

The 以-series clamps one quantity — an age, a price, a length of time, a distance — from one side. Read it as "and up / and down / and in / and out," and remember it comes after the number.

LocalizerSenseExampleMeaning
以上 (yǐshàng)at or above三十岁以上thirty and over
以下 (yǐxià)at or below十八岁以下eighteen and under
以内 (yǐnèi)within (a limit)一周以内within a week
以外 (yǐwài)beyond / apart from三公里以外beyond three km

这个游戏适合六岁以上的儿童。

zhège yóuxì shìhé liù suì yǐshàng de értóng

This game is for children aged six and up. (formal, product label) — 以上 trails the age.

月薪三万以上的工作其实不好找。

yuèxīn sān wàn yǐshàng de gōngzuò qíshí bù hǎo zhǎo

Jobs paying over thirty thousand a month are actually hard to find. (neutral) — 以上 caps a salary from below.

请在一周以内给我们答复。

qǐng zài yì zhōu yǐnèi gěi wǒmen dáfù

Please reply to us within a week. (formal) — 以内 sets a time limit.

购买满三百元,三公里以外也可以免费配送。

gòumǎi mǎn sānbǎi yuán, sān gōnglǐ yǐwài yě kěyǐ miǎnfèi pèisòng

Spend three hundred yuan and free delivery reaches beyond three km too. (formal, notice) — 以外 marks the outer zone.

💡
These are localizers (方位词), so they behave like 上 / 里 / 里边: they attach after the quantity, never before it. If you catch yourself saying *以上三十岁, flip it — 三十岁以上.

The inclusive-boundary trap

Here is the point that trips up English speakers. In standard Chinese usage, 以上 and 以下 include the boundary number. 三十岁以上 normally means "thirty and over," not "thirty-one and over"; 六十分以下 means "sixty and below." English "over thirty" excludes thirty, so learners silently assume the Chinese does too — and misread a rule by one whole unit.

六十分以下算不及格,所以正好六十分是过了的。

liùshí fēn yǐxià suàn bù jígé, suǒyǐ zhènghǎo liùshí fēn shì guò le de

Below sixty counts as failing, so exactly sixty is a pass. (neutral) — 以下 here does NOT include sixty because the sentence spells out the cutoff, but the default reading of 以下 is inclusive.

超过三十岁就不能报名了。

chāoguò sānshí suì jiù bù néng bàomíng le

Once you're over thirty you can no longer sign up. (formal) — to exclude the boundary cleanly, use 超过 / 不到 instead of 以上 / 以下.

When you genuinely need "strictly more than" or "strictly less than," reach for 超过 (chāoguò, exceed) or 不到 (bú dào, less than) rather than 以上 / 以下 — those verbs make the exclusion explicit, whereas 以上 / 以下 lean inclusive.

之间 and the 之-series: between two endpoints

The parallel 之-series — 之上, 之下, 之间, 之中, 之外 — is more abstract and more literary, and it is bolted onto a preceding phrase with the classical particle . The workhorse is 之间 (zhījiān, between), which is special because it needs two endpoints, joined by 和 or 到:

会议安排在下午三点到五点之间。

huìyì ānpái zài xiàwǔ sān diǎn dào wǔ diǎn zhījiān

The meeting is scheduled between three and five in the afternoon. (formal) — A 到 B 之间.

北京和上海之间每天有很多航班。

Běijīng hé Shànghǎi zhījiān měitiān yǒu hěn duō hángbān

There are lots of flights between Beijing and Shanghai every day. (neutral) — A 和 B 之间.

两者之间其实没什么大区别。

liǎng zhě zhījiān qíshí méi shénme dà qūbié

There's really not much difference between the two. (informal) — 两者之间, 'between the two'; note 两, not 二.

The other 之-forms mostly live in fixed, elevated expressions: 意料之中 (yìliào zhī zhōng, "within expectation" = as expected), 意料之外 (yìliào zhī wài, unexpected), 人群之中 (rénqún zhī zhōng, amid the crowd).

这个结果完全在我意料之中。

zhège jiéguǒ wánquán zài wǒ yìliào zhī zhōng

This outcome was entirely within my expectations. (literary) — 之中 in a set expression.

除此以外,我没有别的要求。

chú cǐ yǐwài, wǒ méiyǒu bié de yāoqiú

Apart from this, I have no other requirements. (formal) — 以外 in the abstract sense 'apart from'.

💡
Rough division of labour: 以内 / 以外 handle concrete ranges (time, distance, quantity); 之内 / 之外 / 之中 are more written and abstract; 之间 is your word for 'between two things'. When in doubt in speech, the 以-series is the safer, more everyday choice.

Common Mistakes

1. Fronting them English-style. English says "over thirty"; Chinese postposes the localizer.

❌ 以上三十岁的人可以参加。

Incorrect — the localizer trails the number: 三十岁以上.

✅ 三十岁以上的人可以参加。

sānshí suì yǐshàng de rén kěyǐ cānjiā

People aged thirty and over may take part. — 三十岁以上, number first.

2. Using plain 上 / 下 for a numeric range. Bare 上 / 下 mark physical surfaces; a number needs the formal 以上 / 以下.

❌ 三十岁上的人。

Incorrect — for an age range you need 以上, not bare 上: 三十岁以上.

✅ 三十岁以上的人。

sānshí suì yǐshàng de rén

people aged thirty and over — 以上 for the numeric boundary.

3. Giving 之间 only one endpoint. 之间 means "between," so it demands two poles, linked by 和 or 到.

❌ 我们五点之间见面吧。

Incorrect — 之间 needs two endpoints; one time alone is ungrammatical here.

✅ 我们五点到七点之间见面吧。

wǒmen wǔ diǎn dào qī diǎn zhījiān jiànmiàn ba

Let's meet between five and seven. — 五点到七点之间, two endpoints.

4. Assuming 以上 excludes the boundary. If you mean strictly more than, don't rely on 以上 — say 超过.

❌ 三十岁以上(想表达“不含三十岁”)

Misleading — 三十岁以上 conventionally INCLUDES thirty, so it can't cleanly mean 'strictly over thirty'.

✅ 超过三十岁

chāoguò sānshí suì

strictly over thirty (thirty not included) — use 超过 when you must exclude the boundary.

Key Takeaways

  • 以上 / 以下 / 以内 / 以外 and the more literary 之上 / 之下 / 之间 / 之中 / 之外 are formal localizers that trail the quantity: 三十岁以上, 一周以内, 三公里以外.
  • 以上 / 以下 include the boundary number by convention; for a strict "more/less than," switch to 超过 / 不到.
  • 之间 means "between" and needs two endpoints: A 和 B 之间 or A 到 B 之间 — 两者之间, 五点到七点之间.
  • The 之-forms cluster in set phrases: 意料之中, 意料之外, 除此以外.
  • Register is formal / written — rules, prices, timetables, signs. In casual speech, everyday localizers and 超过 / 不到 do most of this work.
