You have learned the hard rule that an adjective takes no 是: 她很高, never 她是高. So it is a genuine surprise when 是 suddenly *does appear with an adjective — inside the frame 是…的: 她是很高的. This is not the copula sneaking back in. It is a separate construction, a stance marker that wraps a description to say "this really is so." It adds conviction, insists on a general truth, or gives a matter-of-fact, categorical tone. The same frame also classifies things by property — 这件衣服是红色的 "this one is (the) red (one)." The one thing you must keep apart is the other 是…的, the one that highlights the time, place, or manner of a past event; the two look identical but do different jobs.
是…的 as a stance marker: "it really is…"
Compare 他很聪明 with 他是很聪明的. Both mean "he's smart," but the second takes a stance: it insists on the quality, treats it as a settled fact, or reassures a doubter. You reach for it to vouch for something, to state a general principle, or to push back gently: "believe me, he is smart." The adjective inside still keeps its own 很 (or 太, 非常, etc.); the 是…的 wraps around the whole predicate.
别担心,他是很可靠的。
bié dānxīn, tā shì hěn kěkào de
Don't worry, he really is reliable. — 是…的 vouches for the quality.
这种手机是很耐用的,用三四年没问题。
zhè zhǒng shǒujī shì hěn nàiyòng de, yòng sān sì nián méi wèntí
This kind of phone really is durable — three or four years is no problem. — a confident general claim.
说实话,这个决定是很难的。
shuō shíhuà, zhège juédìng shì hěn nán de
Honestly, this was a hard decision. — matter-of-fact, weighing in.
When the statement is a general truth, the inner 很 is often dropped, and 是…的 alone carries the "as a rule, this holds" flavor:
我知道钱是重要的,但健康更重要。
wǒ zhīdào qián shì zhòngyào de, dàn jiànkāng gèng zhòngyào
I know money is important, but health matters more. — 是…的 states it as a general principle.
Classifying by property: 这件衣服是红色的
The same 是…的 sorts a thing into a category — its color, material, origin, or type. Here the closing 的 nominalizes the property into "the [X] one," and 是 links the subject to that class. This is the standard pattern for colors and materials, which are usually expressed as nouns (红色 "red color," 玻璃 "glass") that cannot take 很.
这件衣服是红色的,不是橘色的。
zhè jiàn yīfu shì hóngsè de, bú shì júsè de
This piece of clothing is red, not orange. — classifying by color.
这个杯子是玻璃的,小心点儿。
zhège bēizi shì bōli de, xiǎoxīn diǎnr
This cup is glass, be careful. — classifying by material.
那条围巾是羊毛的,很暖和。
nà tiáo wéijīn shì yángmáo de, hěn nuǎnhuo
That scarf is wool — very warm. — 是…的 for the material, then a plain 很暖和 predicate.
Negation of both uses is simply 不是…的: 这不是玻璃的 "this isn't glass," 他不是那么小气的 "he isn't that stingy."
Not the same as the past-event 是…的
Chinese has a second, high-frequency 是…的 that this page is not about: the one that frames the time, place, or manner of a completed event. It always has a real action verb inside it and answers "when / where / how did it happen?" — see the full 是…的 construction.
我是去年搬来的。
wǒ shì qùnián bān lái de
It was last year that I moved here. — past-event 是…的: highlights WHEN.
你是怎么知道的?
nǐ shì zěnme zhīdào de?
How did you find out? — past-event 是…的: highlights HOW.
Telling the two apart is easy once you look at what sits between 是 and 的. If it is a static quality, adjective, or category noun (聪明, 红色, 羊毛), you have the quality-emphasis frame of this page. If it is an adverbial of time/place/manner plus a real verb (去年搬来, 坐飞机来, 怎么知道), you have the past-event frame.
他是很聪明的。
tā shì hěn cōngming de
He's a smart guy. — quality: a static characteristic.
这个办法是他自己想出来的。
zhège bànfǎ shì tā zìjǐ xiǎng chūlái de
He came up with this method himself. — past-event: a real verb (想出来) is framed.
Common Mistakes
1. Over-using 是…的 for a plain, on-the-spot description. A simple present observation needs no stance frame.
❌ 今天是很热的。
Odd — sounds like you're arguing a point; for a plain observation just say 今天很热.
✅ 今天很热。
jīntiān hěn rè
It's hot today. — plain report, no 是…的 needed.
2. Dropping the closing 的. The frame is 是…的; without 的 you are left with the ungrammatical *是 + adjective.
❌ 他是很聪明。
Incorrect — the stance frame needs its closing 的.
✅ 他是很聪明的。
tā shì hěn cōngming de
He really is smart.
3. Putting 很 on a category noun instead of using 是…的. Colors-as-nouns and materials cannot take 很; classify them with 是…的.
❌ 这个杯子很玻璃。
Incorrect — 玻璃 is a noun; it can't take 很. Use 是…的.
✅ 这个杯子是玻璃的。
zhège bēizi shì bōli de
This cup is glass.
4. Bare 是 before an adjective (no 的). 是 alone before a quality is always wrong; use plain 很 for a neutral statement, or the full 是…的 to take a stance.
❌ 她是高。
Incorrect — no bare 是 before an adjective; say 她很高, or 她是很高的 to insist on it.
✅ 她很高。
tā hěn gāo
She's tall. — plain predicate, no 是.
Key Takeaways
- 是…的 around an adjective is a stance marker, not the copula: it asserts a quality with conviction or as a general truth (他是很聪明的, 钱是重要的).
- The inner 很 stays for a specific claim and is often dropped for a general principle; negate the whole thing with 不是…的.
- The same frame classifies by color, material, or type — 这件衣服是红色的, 杯子是玻璃的 — where the property noun can't take 很.
- Keep it separate from the past-event 是…的 (是去年搬来的, 是怎么知道的), which frames the time/place/manner of a real action.

- 的 (Firm Assertion / Reassurance)HSK 3 — A sentence-final 的 can seal a firm statement or reassurance — 会成功的 'it'll work out', 我不会告诉他的 'I won't tell him, I promise' — stamping the clause with conviction; this stance 的 is an abbreviated (是)…的, distinct from the past-event 是…的 cleft.
- The 是…的 Construction (Overview)HSK 3 — The 是…的 (shì…de) construction spotlights the CIRCUMSTANCES of a completed, known event — the time, place, manner, means, or agent. 我是坐飞机来的 'it was by plane that I came', 他是昨天到的 'it was yesterday that he arrived'. The frame is Subject + 是 + [circumstance] + Verb + 的. It's Chinese's version of English clefting — 'It was X that…' — and it works only for realized, past events, never future ones.
- Adjectives Are Stative Verbs (No 是)HSK 1 — A Chinese adjective is a kind of verb — it predicates on its own, with NO copula 是 (shì). 她很高 'she is tall', 天气很好 'the weather is good', 这个太贵了 'this is too expensive' — never *她是高. 高 already means 'to be tall', so 是 has no job; negate with 不 (不高), not 没.
- 会…的 (Confident Prediction)HSK 4 — The 会…的 frame wraps a modal 会 and a sentence-final 的 around a verb to make a confident prediction — 他会来的 'he'll definitely come', 一切都会好的 'everything will be fine'; the bracket upgrades a mere 'may' into a reassuring 'surely will'.
