شَاهَدَ / يُشَاهِدُ is the high-frequency verb for “watch,” “view,” or “observe.” It comes from root ش-ه-د in Form III, but its contemporary syntax is simpler than the English alternatives suggest: the thing watched is normally a direct object, with no preposition.
Form III often has an associative or reciprocal tendency, but that tendency does not mechanically determine every verb's meaning. شاهد is lexically transitive: شاهد فيلما، شاهد المباراة، شاهد الحادث. Its relation to Form-I شهد “witness, testify, attend” is real, yet the two verbs are not freely interchangeable.
For momentary direction of the eyes and the contrast in prepositions, see نظر with إلى and في.
Lookup card and principal parts
| Item | Form | Use |
|---|---|---|
| root and Form | ش-ه-د، Form III | sound derived verb |
| perfect | شَاهَدَ | he watched / observed |
| imperfect | يُشَاهِدُ | he watches / is watching |
| imperative | شَاهِدْ | watch! / view! |
| maṣdar | مُشَاهَدَةٌ | watching, viewing, observation |
| active participle | مُشَاهِدٌ | viewer, spectator, observer |
| passive | شُوهِدَ — يُشَاهَدُ | was/is seen or observed |
| passive participle | مُشَاهَدٌ | viewed, observed |
The long ā after the first radical belongs to the Form-III perfect and imperative stem. The imperfect has the characteristic Form-III prefix vowel and internal ā: يُشَاهِدُ, not Form-I يَشْهَدُ. The two may share an English translation in a particular context, but their paradigms remain distinct.
شاهدنا فيلما وثائقيا عن تغير المناخ.
shāhadnā fīlman wathāʾiqiyyan ʿan taghayyuri l-munākh.
We watched a documentary about climate change. (Formal neutral.)
يشاهد الفني الشاشة بحثا عن أي تغير مفاجئ.
yushāhidu l-fanniyyu sh-shāshata baḥthan ʿan ʾayyi taghayyurin mufājiʾ.
The technician watches the screen for any sudden change. (Formal technical register.)
The useful paradigm
As a sound Form-III verb, شاهد keeps its stem throughout ordinary person marking. Mood changes the imperfect ending, and the five verbs lose their final ن in the subjunctive and jussive.
| Environment | Form | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| perfect samples | شَاهَدَ، شَاهَدَتْ، شَاهَدْتُ، شَاهَدُوا | he/she/I/they watched |
| indicative | يُشَاهِدُ، تُشَاهِدِينَ، يُشَاهِدُونَ | watches; you f.sg. watch; they watch |
| subjunctive | لَنْ يُشَاهِدَ، لَنْ يُشَاهِدُوا | will not watch |
| jussive | لَمْ يُشَاهِدْ، لَمْ يُشَاهِدُوا | did not watch |
| imperatives | شَاهِدْ، شَاهِدِي، شَاهِدُوا | watch! by addressee |

Ranked senses and valency
1. Watch or view media and events
The most frequent sense is sustained viewing: films, programs, matches, broadcasts, performances, and recordings. All are direct objects. A location or device can follow separately with في or على: شاهد المباراة في المنزل “watched the match at home,” شاهد المقطع على هاتفه “watched the clip on his phone.” Those prepositions introduce circumstances, not the verb's object.
شاهدت الأسرة نشرة الأخبار بعد العشاء.
shāhadati l-ʾusratu nashrata l-ʾakhbāri baʿda l-ʿashāʾ.
The family watched the news after dinner. (Formal neutral.)
يشاهد آلاف المتابعين البث المباشر على الإنترنت.
yushāhidu ʾālāfu l-mutābiʿīna l-baththa l-mubāshira ʿalā l-ʾintarnit.
Thousands of followers are watching the livestream online. (Media register.)
2. Observe a person, process, or phenomenon
In scientific, technical, and professional prose, شاهد can mean “observe” or “see occurring.” It reports visual evidence without necessarily implying prolonged monitoring. For systematic monitoring over time, راقب is often more exact; for a single viewed occurrence, شاهد is natural.
شاهد الباحثون تغيرا واضحا في سلوك الحيوانات بعد العاصفة.
shāhada l-bāḥithūna taghayyuran wāḍiḥan fī sulūki l-ḥayawānāti baʿda l-ʿāṣifa.
The researchers observed a clear change in the animals' behavior after the storm. (Academic.)
شاهدت الطبيبة المريض يمشي من دون مساعدة.
shāhadati ṭ-ṭabībatu l-marīḍa yamshī min dūni musāʿada.
The doctor observed the patient walking without assistance. (Formal clinical context.)
The last example uses object + imperfect clause: the doctor saw the patient performing the action. Arabic does not need an equivalent of English to before يمشي.
3. Witness or see an incident firsthand
شاهد الحادث means “saw/witnessed the accident” as an eyewitness. It emphasizes perception of the event. Form-I شهد الحادث can also mean “witnessed the incident,” but شهد additionally covers attending, testifying, and bearing witness—meanings that شاهد does not automatically carry.
شاهد سائق الحافلة الحادث واتصل بالشرطة فورا.
shāhada sāʾiqu l-ḥāfilati l-ḥāditha wa-ttaṣala bish-shurṭati fawran.
The bus driver witnessed the accident and immediately called the police. (Formal neutral.)
4. Consult visual evidence
Imperative شاهد often means “see” in cross-references, demonstrations, and media instructions: شاهد الفيديو “watch the video,” شاهد الشكل الآتي “see the following figure.” In academic prose, انظر remains more conventional for a textual cross-reference, while شاهد suggests actual viewing.
لشرح الخطوات بالتفصيل، شاهد الفيديو المرفق بالتقرير.
lisharḥi l-khuṭuwāti bit-tafṣīli, shāhidi l-fīdyū l-murfaqa bit-taqrīr.
For a detailed explanation of the steps, watch the video attached to the report. (Formal instructional register.)
شاهد, نظر إلى, رأى, and راقب
These verbs divide visual experience differently.
| Verb | Core perspective | Typical object frame |
|---|---|---|
| نَظَرَ إِلَى | direct one's gaze toward | إلى + object |
| رَأَى | see, perceive, or form an opinion | direct object |
| شَاهَدَ | watch, view, or visually witness | direct object |
| رَاقَبَ | monitor or keep under observation | direct object |
نظرنا إلى السماء، ثم شاهدنا طائرة تعبر فوق المدينة.
naẓarnā ʾilā s-samāʾi, thumma shāhadnā ṭāʾiratan taʿburu fawqa l-madīna.
We looked up at the sky and then saw a plane crossing over the city. (Formal neutral.)
Passive, participles, and media collocations
The passive شُوهِدَ / يُشَاهَدُ is common in formal reports when the observer is unknown or irrelevant: شوهد دخان “smoke was seen,” يشاهد في المنطقة “is observed in the region.” The visible entity becomes the grammatical subject.
شوهد دخان كثيف قرب المستودع قبيل الفجر.
shūhida dukhānun kathīfun qurba l-mustawdaʿi qubayla l-fajr.
Thick smoke was seen near the warehouse shortly before dawn. (Formal reportive passive.)
مشاهد with kasra before the final radical is the active participle “viewer”: عدد المشاهدين “number of viewers.” مشاهد can also be the plural of مشهد “scene,” identical in unvocalized writing but pronounced مَشَاهِد. The passive participle مُشَاهَد “viewed/observed” appears in technical phrases such as السلوك المشاهد “observed behavior.”
| Collocation | Meaning and register |
|---|---|
| شَاهَدَ فِيلْمًا / مُبَارَاةً | watch a film / match (neutral) |
| شَاهَدَ بَثًّا مُبَاشِرًا | watch a livestream (media) |
| شَاهَدَ الْحَادِثَ | witness the incident visually (neutral/formal) |
| عَدَدُ الْمُشَاهَدَاتِ | view count (digital media) |
| قَيْدُ الْمُشَاهَدَةِ | under observation (formal/clinical) |
Common Mistakes
Adding إلى before the thing watched
❌ شاهدنا إلى الفيلم بعد العشاء.
Incorrect—شاهد is transitive and takes the film directly.
✅ شاهدنا الفيلم بعد العشاء.
shāhadnā l-fīlma baʿda l-ʿashāʾ.
We watched the film after dinner.
Using the Form-I imperfect for Form III
❌ هو يشهد برنامجا علميا الآن.
Incorrect for ‘is watching’—يشهد is Form I and normally means witnesses, attends, or testifies by context.
✅ هو يشاهد برنامجا علميا الآن.
huwa yushāhidu barnāmajan ʿilmiyyan l-ʾān.
He is watching a science program now.
Treating شاهد as “testify”
❌ شاهد الموظف أمام المحكمة بأن التوقيع مزور.
Incorrect for courtroom testimony—use شهد before the court; شاهد emphasizes visual observation.
✅ شهد الموظف أمام المحكمة بأن التوقيع مزور.
shahida l-muwaẓẓafu ʾamāma l-maḥkamati biʾanna t-tawqīʿa muzawwar.
The employee testified before the court that the signature was forged.
Choosing the precise verb for continuous monitoring
يشاهد المهندس ضغط النظام طوال اليوم.
yushāhidu l-muhandisu ḍaghṭa n-niẓāmi ṭawāla l-yawm.
The engineer watches the system pressure throughout the day. (Grammatical, but less precise for systematic monitoring.)
يراقب المهندس ضغط النظام طوال اليوم.
yurāqibu l-muhandisu ḍaghṭa n-niẓāmi ṭawāla l-yawm.
The engineer monitors the system pressure throughout the day. (Preferred technical wording.)
Key Takeaways
- شَاهَدَ — يُشَاهِدُ — شَاهِدْ — مُشَاهَدَة is a regular sound Form-III bundle from ش-ه-د.
- The viewed film, event, person, or phenomenon is normally a direct object, without إلى.
- Use نظر إلى for directing the gaze, رأى for seeing/perceiving, and راقب for systematic monitoring.
- Form-I شهد covers witnessing, attending, and testifying; it is not simply another conjugation of شاهد.
- Passive شوهد is productive in formal eyewitness reports, while مشاهد can mean “viewer” or, with different vocalization, “scenes.”
