اِسْتَيْقَظَ / يَسْتَيْقِظُ is the standard formal-MSA verb “wake up, become awake.” It is Form X from root ي-ق-ظ. The root begins with yāʾ, and that consonant is visible inside استيقظ as the ي of ـتَيْـ; it is not an extra spelling letter and must not be omitted.
The central verb is intransitive: the person who becomes awake is the subject. To say that someone or something wakes another person, use causative Form IV أَيْقَظَ / يُوقِظُ. English uses wake in both frames, so this valency difference deserves to be learned together with the morphology.
For the preceding state and the contrasting hollow paradigm, see نام — sleep.
Principal parts and lexical profile
| Item | Verified form | Meaning or use |
|---|---|---|
| root and Form | ي-ق-ظ، Form X | root-initial yāʾ remains inside the derived stem |
| perfect | اِسْتَيْقَظَ | he woke up |
| imperfect | يَسْتَيْقِظُ | he wakes up / is becoming awake |
| imperative | اِسْتَيْقِظْ | wake up! |
| maṣdar | اِسْتِيقَاظٌ | waking, awakening |
| active participle | مُسْتَيْقِظٌ | awake |
| basic passive | not productive | the ordinary “wake up” sense is intransitive |
| causative counterpart | أَيْقَظَ — يُوقِظُ — إِيقَاظٌ | wake someone/something |
The principal-parts chain is اِسْتَيْقَظَ — يَسْتَيْقِظُ — اِسْتَيْقِظْ — اِسْتِيقَاظًا. Notice the contrast between -ay- in the finite stem and active participle, but long ī in the maṣdar استيقاظ. These forms are established lexical morphology; mechanically preserving one vowel sequence everywhere produces nonexistent forms.
استيقظت قبل المنبه بدقائق
istayqaẓtu qabla l-munabbihi bidaqāʾiq
I woke up a few minutes before the alarm. (Formal neutral.)
هل ما زال الأطفال مستيقظين؟
hal mā zāla l-ʾaṭfālu mustayqiẓīn?
Are the children still awake? (Formal neutral.)
A regular derived-form paradigm
Although the internal spelling looks dense, the finite verb behaves regularly once its stem is learned. The perfect adds suffixes to استيقظـ; the imperfect uses يستيقظـ. The initial alif in the perfect and imperative is hamzat al-waṣl: it is pronounced at utterance onset but elides after a preceding vowel.
| Environment | Form | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| perfect, 1 sg. | اِسْتَيْقَظْتُ | I woke up |
| indicative, 3 m.sg. | يَسْتَيْقِظُ | he wakes up |
| subjunctive after لن | لَنْ يَسْتَيْقِظَ | he will not wake up |
| jussive after لم | لَمْ يَسْتَيْقِظْ | he did not wake up |
| imperative | اِسْتَيْقِظْ، اِسْتَيْقِظِي، اِسْتَيْقِظُوا | wake up! (m.sg., f.sg., m./mixed pl.) |
Unlike a hollow verb such as نام, استيقظ does not delete a medial long vowel in the jussive. Its final radical ظ simply takes sukūn: لم يستيقظْ. In the five verbs, mood deletes nūn: لن يستيقظوا، لم يستيقظوا، لن تستيقظي.
لم يستيقظ المريض طوال الفحص
lam yastayqiẓi l-marīḍu ṭiwāla l-faḥṣ
The patient did not wake up throughout the examination. (Formal; jussive with a linking i.)
استيقظوا الآن كي لا تفوتكم الحافلة
istayqiẓū l-ʾāna kay lā tafūtakumu l-ḥāfila
Wake up now so that you do not miss the bus. (Formal instruction to a group.)
تعال واستيقظ، فقد أشرقت الشمس
taʿāla wastayqiẓ, faqad ʾashraqati sh-shams
Come on, wake up—the sun has risen. (Formal direct address; the imperative hamza elides after wa-.)
Ranked senses and time frames
1. Wake from sleep
The unmarked sense is the transition from sleeping to being awake. من النوم can make the source state explicit, especially where “recover consciousness” or another transition might otherwise be possible. It is not obligatory in ordinary contexts.
استيقظت الطفلة من النوم عندما سمعت صوت أمها
istayqaẓati ṭ-ṭiflatu mina n-nawmi ʿindamā samiʿat ṣawta ʾummihā
The girl woke from sleep when she heard her mother's voice. (Formal neutral.)
2. Wake at a time or to a stimulus
Use عند or an adverb for clock time: استيقظ عند السادسة / مبكرا / متأخرا. Use على صوت for the sound or stimulus present at waking, often corresponding to English “wake to.” A cause can also be stated with بسبب, but على is the established compact frame for what someone awoke to hear or find.
يستيقظ أبي عند الخامسة في أيام العمل
yastayqiẓu ʾabī ʿinda l-khāmisati fī ʾayyāmi l-ʿamal
My father wakes up at five on workdays. (Formal neutral.)
استيقظ سكان الحي على صوت انفجار بعيد
istayqaẓa sukkānu l-ḥayyi ʿalā ṣawti nfijārin baʿīd
The neighborhood's residents woke to the sound of a distant explosion. (Formal news style.)
3. Become alert or aware
In formal rhetorical prose, individuals or societies may يستيقظون على خطر / حقيقة “wake up to a danger/fact,” meaning become aware after neglect. This metaphor is transparent but marked; neutral analytical prose may prefer أدرك “realize” or انتبه إلى “become alert to.”
استيقظت المؤسسات أخيرا على خطورة تسرب البيانات
istayqaẓati l-muʾassasātu ʾakhīran ʿalā khuṭūrati tasarrubi l-bayānāt
The institutions finally woke up to the danger of data leaks. (Formal rhetorical use.)
The active participle مستيقظ describes a continuing awake state, not the transition itself. Its antonym in the sleep contrast is نائم; adjective يقظ more often means “alert, vigilant.” Thus كان مستيقظا means “was awake,” whereas كان يقظا can praise attentiveness.
بقيت مستيقظة حتى انتهى الاجتماع الافتراضي
baqītu mustayqiẓatan ḥattā ntahā l-ijtimāʿu l-iftirāḍī
I stayed awake until the online meeting ended. (Formal neutral; female speaker.)
Intransitive استيقظ versus causative أيقظ
استيقظ cannot take the sleeper as a direct object in its ordinary sense. Causative أيقظ supplies that frame: أيقظني المنبه “the alarm woke me,” أيقظت الأم طفلها “the mother woke her child.” Its maṣdar is إيقاظ, and its passive أُوقِظَ / يُوقَظُ is available when the awakened person is promoted to subject.
أيقظني رنين الهاتف قبل الفجر
ʾayqaẓanī ranīnu l-hātifi qabla l-fajr
The phone's ringing woke me before dawn. (Formal neutral.)
أوقظ المرضى في السادسة لإجراء الفحوص
ʾūqiẓa l-marḍā fī s-sādisati liʾijrāʾi l-fuḥūṣ
The patients were awakened at six for tests. (Formal medical passive.)
Do not analyze Form X here as automatically “seek wakefulness.” Derived-form labels describe recurring historical tendencies, not guaranteed meanings. استيقظ is a lexical intransitive “become awake”; speakers learn it as a unit.

Common Mistakes
Omitting the root-initial yāʾ
❌ استقظت عند السابعة
Incorrect spelling—the root begins with ي, which appears inside استيقظ.
✅ استيقظت عند السابعة
istayqaẓtu ʿinda s-sābiʿa
I woke up at seven.
Using the intransitive verb with a direct object
❌ استيقظ المنبه الطفل
Incorrect for ‘the alarm woke the child’—استيقظ is intransitive; use causative أيقظ.
✅ أيقظ المنبه الطفل
ʾayqaẓa l-munabbihu ṭ-ṭifl
The alarm woke the child.
Treating the sleeper as an object of a reflexive verb
❌ استيقظت نفسي في الخامسة
Incorrect—Arabic does not add نفسي to make this verb reflexive; the person waking is already the subject.
✅ استيقظت في الخامسة
istayqaẓtu fī l-khāmisa
I woke up at five.
Confusing the maṣdars of waking and causing to wake
❌ كان إيقاظي مبكرا عادة يومية
Incorrect for the intended ‘my waking up’—إيقاظ presents causation; use استيقاظ for the sleeper's own transition.
✅ كان استيقاظي مبكرا عادة يومية
kāna stīqāẓī mubakkiran ʿādatan yawmiyya
Waking up early was a daily habit of mine.
