اِسْتَمَرَّ / يَسْتَمِرُّ means “continue, persist, remain in progress.” It is Form X from the geminate root م-ر-ر: the last two root consonants merge under a shadda in استمرّ, but separate before consonant-initial suffixes in استمررتُ، استمررنا.
The verb may stand without a complement (استمر المطر “the rain continued”), take في + noun or verbal noun (استمر في العمل “continued working”), or be followed by an imperfect clause (استمر يعمل “kept working”). استمر في أن + finite verb is grammatical and attested in formal prose, especially with “continue to be/remain,” but it is heavier than the other frames and should not be taught as the automatic equivalent of English continue to.
For how this continuation reaches its endpoint, compare انتهى with من and إلى; for the shared doubled-radical mechanics, see the geminate overview.
Lookup card and principal parts
| Item | Form | Use |
|---|---|---|
| root and Form | م-ر-ر، Form X | geminate derived verb |
| perfect | اِسْتَمَرَّ | he/it continued |
| imperfect | يَسْتَمِرُّ | he/it continues |
| imperative | اِسْتَمِرَّ / اِسْتَمْرِرْ | continue!; merged and unmerged variants |
| maṣdar | اِسْتِمْرَارٌ | continuation, continuity, persistence |
| active participle | مُسْتَمِرٌّ | continuing, ongoing, continuous |
| passive | اُسْتُمِرَّ فِيهِ — يُسْتَمَرُّ فِيهِ | impersonal “it was/is continued,” rare and bureaucratic |
| passive participle | مُسْتَمَرٌّ فِيهِ | persisted in/continued, rare; not the normal adjective “continuous” |
The common adjective is active مستمر vocalized مُسْتَمِرّ: تحسن مستمر “continuous improvement,” مشكلة مستمرة “an ongoing problem.” Because normal writing omits the vowels, the rare passive مُسْتَمَرّ looks identical. In practice, context and the overwhelming frequency of the active adjective make the intended reading clear.
استمر المطر طوال الليل وتوقفت بعض الرحلات.
istamarra l-maṭaru ṭawāla l-layli wa-tawaqqafat baʿḍu r-riḥlāt.
The rain continued throughout the night, and some journeys were suspended. (Formal neutral.)
تستمر أعمال الصيانة حتى نهاية الأسبوع.
tastamirru ʾaʿmālu ṣ-ṣiyānati ḥattā nihāyati l-ʾusbūʿ.
The maintenance work continues until the end of the week. (Formal.)
Gemination and the useful paradigm
When no consonant-initial suffix follows, the two root r sounds merge: استمرّ، يستمرّ، استمرّت، استمرّوا. Before تُ، تَ، تِ، نا، نَ, they separate: استمررتُ، استمررتَ، استمررنا، استمررنَ. The written contrast is especially visible in the first person.
| Environment | Form | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| perfect samples | اِسْتَمَرَّ، اِسْتَمَرَّتْ، اِسْتَمْرَرْتُ، اِسْتَمَرُّوا | he/she/I/they continued |
| indicative | يَسْتَمِرُّ، تَسْتَمِرِّينَ، يَسْتَمِرُّونَ | continues; you f.sg. continue; they continue |
| subjunctive | لَنْ يَسْتَمِرَّ، لَنْ يَسْتَمِرُّوا | will not continue |
| jussive | لَمْ يَسْتَمِرَّ / لَمْ يَسْتَمْرِرْ | did not continue; merged and unmerged variants |
| imperatives | اِسْتَمِرَّ / اِسْتَمْرِرْ، اِسْتَمِرِّي، اِسْتَمِرُّوا | continue! by addressee |
In the suffixless jussive and masculine singular imperative, Classical/standard morphology permits both a merged form and an unmerged form. Contemporary edited prose strongly favors written لم يستمرّ، استمرّ; the expanded لم يستمرر، استمرر is correct but uncommon. With a vowel-initial ending, merging is straightforward: لن يستمرَّ، استمرّي، استمرّوا.
لن يستمر المشروع من دون تمويل إضافي.
lan yastamirra l-mashrūʿu min dūni tamwīlin ʾiḍāfiyy.
The project will not continue without additional funding. (Formal; subjunctive merged form.)
لم يستمر الهدوء أكثر من بضع دقائق.
lam yastamirra l-hudūʾu ʾakthara min biḍʿi daqāʾiq.
The calm did not last more than a few minutes. (Formal neutral; common merged jussive.)
استمروا في العمل، لكن خذوا استراحة كل ساعتين.
istamirrū fī l-ʿamali, lākin khudhū stirāḥatan kulla sāʿatayn.
Keep working, but take a break every two hours. (Formal instruction to a group.)
Ranked meanings and complement frames
1. An event or state continues: no preposition
An ongoing event, condition, trend, or period may be the subject directly: استمر النقاش، استمرت الأزمة، يستمر النمو. A duration can follow in the accusative or as a prepositional phrase. No في is needed merely because English uses continue.
استمر النقاش ثلاث ساعات من دون التوصل إلى اتفاق.
istamarra n-niqāshu thalātha sāʿātin min dūni t-tawaṣṣuli ʾilā ttifāq.
The discussion continued for three hours without reaching an agreement. (Formal.)
رغم التحسن الأخير، استمرت الأسعار مرتفعة.
raghma t-taḥassuni l-ʾakhīri, istamarrati l-ʾasʿāru murtafiʿa.
Despite the recent improvement, prices remained high. (Formal economic register.)
With a predicative adjective, استمر can mean “remain”: استمر الوضع مستقرا “the situation remained stable.” This frame is formal and focuses on continuity; ظلّ is another common choice.
2. Continue an activity: استمر في + noun or maṣdar
في presents the activity as a domain or ongoing process. It may introduce an ordinary noun (في العمل، في الدراسة) or a verbal noun with its complements (في مراجعة البيانات). This is the safest and most versatile frame for English “continue doing something.”
استمرت اللجنة في مراجعة الشهادات حتى وقت متأخر.
istamarrati l-lajnatu fī murājaʿati sh-shahādāti ḥattā waqtin mutaʾakhkhir.
The committee continued reviewing the testimony until late. (Formal.)
يستمر الطلاب في التدريب خلال العطلة الصيفية.
yastamirru ṭ-ṭullābu fī t-tadrībi khilāla l-ʿuṭlati ṣ-ṣayfiyya.
The students continue training during the summer break. (Formal neutral.)
3. Keep doing: استمر + imperfect clause
A following imperfect can depict the repeated or ongoing action directly: استمر يتحدث، استمرت تحاول، استمروا يعملون. This construction is common and vivid, especially when the action itself is foregrounded. It has the same subject unless context supplies another analysis.
استمر الطبيب يشرح الخيارات حتى فهمت الأسرة المخاطر.
istamarra ṭ-ṭabību yashraḥu l-khiyārāti ḥattā fahimati l-ʾusratu l-makhāṭir.
The doctor kept explaining the options until the family understood the risks. (Formal neutral.)
This frame is not governed by أن, and the following imperfect is not automatically subjunctive. It is a circumstantial/continuative clause describing what the subject kept doing.
4. The marked frame استمر في أن...
استمر في أن + subjunctive is grammatically possible and attested in formal prose. It is most defensible when the writer wants a full finite proposition, especially with يكون: استمر في أن يكون صوتا مستقلا “continued to be an independent voice.” Nevertheless, it is syntactically heavier than استمرّ مستقلا, ظلّ صوتا مستقلا, or استمر في عمله. For an ordinary activity, do not insert في أن merely because English says continue to do.
استمر المركز في أن يكون مصدرا مستقلا للبيانات خلال الأزمة.
istamarra l-markazu fī ʾan yakūna maṣdaran mustaqillan lil-bayānāti khilāla l-ʾazma.
The center continued to be an independent source of data during the crisis. (Formal; grammatical but heavier than a predicate frame.)
استمر المركز مصدرا مستقلا للبيانات خلال الأزمة.
istamarra l-markazu maṣdaran mustaqillan lil-bayānāti khilāla l-ʾazma.
The center remained an independent source of data during the crisis. (Formal; lighter predicate frame.)
5. Persist in or keep to: استمر على
Formal Arabic also uses استمر على for maintaining a course, practice, or state: استمر على نهجه، استمر على العلاج. With medication or a prescribed plan, it means “continue/stay on.” This is distinct from في, which conceptualizes participation in an activity.
نصحها الطبيب بأن تستمر على العلاج أسبوعين آخرين.
naṣaḥahā ṭ-ṭabību biʾan tastamirra ʿalā l-ʿilāji ʾusbūʿayni ʾākharayn.
The doctor advised her to continue the treatment for another two weeks. (Formal clinical register.)
Passive and collocations
Because استمر is overwhelmingly intransitive, its passive is marginal. Formal bureaucratic prose can use impersonal استمرّ فيه in the passive sense “it was continued,” but clear modern writing usually supplies an active subject or uses واصل transitively. Do not invent a passive merely to mirror English.
| Collocation | Meaning and register |
|---|---|
| اِسْتَمَرَّ الْعَمَلُ | the work continued (neutral/formal) |
| اِسْتَمَرَّ فِي الْعَمَلِ | continued working (neutral/formal) |
| اِسْتَمَرَّ عَلَى نَهْجِهِ | persisted in/kept to his approach (formal) |
| بِشَكْلٍ مُسْتَمِرٍّ | continuously (formal) |
| اِسْتِمْرَارُ الْخِدْمَةِ | continuity of service (administrative/technical) |
| مَا زَالَ مُسْتَمِرًّا | is still ongoing (formal neutral) |
Common Mistakes
Keeping the merged stem before تُ
❌ أنا استمرت في العمل رغم التعب.
Incorrect agreement—استمرت means ‘she continued,’ while أنا requires first-person استمررت.
✅ استمررت في العمل رغم التعب.
istamrartu fī l-ʿamali raghma t-taʿab.
I continued working despite the fatigue.
Avoiding an unnecessarily heavy في أن frame
استمر في أن يكتب التقرير ساعتين.
istamarra fī ʾan yaktuba t-taqrīra sāʿatayn.
He continued to write the report for two hours. (Grammatical, but needlessly heavy for this ordinary activity.)
استمر في كتابة التقرير ساعتين.
istamarra fī kitābati t-taqrīri sāʿatayn.
He continued writing the report for two hours. (Preferred.)
Adding في when the event itself is the subject
❌ استمر في المطر حتى الصباح.
Incorrect for ‘the rain continued’—the event is the subject and needs no في.
✅ استمر المطر حتى الصباح.
istamarra l-maṭaru ḥattā ṣ-ṣabāḥ.
The rain continued until morning.
Writing one r before a consonantal suffix
❌ استمرنا في المحاولة بعد فشل الاختبار الأول.
Incorrect—the geminate splits before نا, producing استمررنا.
✅ استمررنا في المحاولة بعد فشل الاختبار الأول.
istamrarnā fī l-muḥāwalati baʿda fashali l-ikhtibāri l-ʾawwal.
We kept trying after the first test failed.
Key Takeaways
- اِسْتَمَرَّ — يَسْتَمِرُّ — اِسْتِمْرَار — مُسْتَمِرّ is a geminate Form-X family from root م-ر-ر.
- The doubled r separates before consonant-initial suffixes: استمررت، استمررنا.
- An event can simply استمر; a person normally continues an activity with في + noun/maṣdar or a following imperfect.
- استمر في أن is grammatical but marked and heavy, especially useful with a full finite predicate such as أن يكون, not required before every action.
- استمر على means persist in or keep to a course, practice, or treatment.
- Passive forms are marginal because the verb is normally intransitive; prefer an active subject or transitive واصل when clarity requires an agent.
