The three high-frequency interrogatives أين “where,” متى “when,” and كيف “how” request a circumstance or a predicate rather than a yes–no decision. Formal Modern Standard Arabic normally places them at the front and then continues with ordinary Arabic word order. There is no dummy auxiliary comparable to English do.
Each word still has a grammatical function. أين is a place adverb or locative predicate, متى is a time adverb, and كيف is a manner adverb or a predicate asking about state. They are indeclinable, so their spelling does not visibly change with a syntactic role, but the answer occupies the position and meaning they request.
The same no-inversion principle is developed with argument questions on Word Order in Questions.
أين asks for location or direction
As a locative predicate, أين combines directly with a noun phrase: أين المحطة؟ There is no present-tense copula meaning is. As an adjunct with a verb, it asks where an event happens.
أين أقرب صيدلية؟
ʾayna ʾaqrabu ṣaydaliyya(h)?
Where is the nearest pharmacy?
أين تعمل الآن؟
ʾayna taʿmalu l-ʾān?
Where do you work now? (Addressed to one man.)
أين تسكنين خلال الفصل الدراسي؟
ʾayna taskunīna khilāla l-faṣli d-dirāsiyy?
Where do you live during the academic term? (Addressed to one woman.)
The feminine ending ـين in تسكنين is part of the verb; it is not triggered by أين. Likewise, masculine تعمل is simply the ordinary imperfect form appropriate to its addressee.
Prepositions refine the spatial relation. من أين requests an origin, إلى أين a destination, and حتى أين an endpoint. The preposition stays before its complement; Arabic does not move it to the end.
من أين حصلت على هذه المعلومة؟
min ʾayna ḥaṣalta ʿalā hādhihi l-maʿlūma(h)?
Where did you get this information from?
إلى أين ستذهبين بعد المحاضرة؟
ʾilā ʾayna satadhhabīna baʿda l-muḥāḍara(h)?
Where will you go after the lecture? (Addressed to one woman.)
English uses where for both location and direction; Arabic can do the same in context, but the explicit preposition removes doubt. A short answer should preserve it: إلى المكتبة answers إلى أين؟, whereas في المكتبة answers “where, at what location?”
متى asks for a point or period in time
متى can question past, present, or future time. Tense comes from the Arabic verb and context, not from an interrogative auxiliary.
متى وصل الضيوف؟
matā waṣala ḍ-ḍuyūf?
When did the guests arrive?
متى يبدأ التسجيل؟
matā yabdaʾu t-tasjīl?
When does registration begin?
متى سترسلين النسخة النهائية؟
matā satursilīna n-nuskhata n-nihāʾiyya(h)?
When will you send the final copy? (Addressed to one woman.)
After متى, the examples retain neutral verb-first grammar. English translations need did/does/will, but Arabic past وصل, present يبدأ, and future سترسلين already provide the necessary time reference.
منذ متى asks “since when?” and حتى متى asks “until when/how long will this continue?” Both are normal (formal) expressions, with حتى متى often carrying impatience depending on tone.
منذ متى وأنت تعمل في هذا المجال؟
mundhu matā wa-ʾanta taʿmalu fī hādhā l-majāl?
How long have you been working in this field? (Literally, since when?)
حتى متى سيبقى الطريق مغلقا؟
ḥattā matā sayabqā ṭ-ṭarīqu mughlaqan?
Until when will the road remain closed?
كيف asks about manner or state
With an action verb, كيف is a manner adjunct: it asks by what method or in what way. With a nominal expression, it acts predicatively and asks about condition. The expected answer is therefore an adverbial phrase, description, or explanation—not yes or no.
كيف أصل إلى المتحف من هنا؟
kayfa ʾaṣilu ʾilā l-matḥafi min hunā?
How do I get to the museum from here?
كيف حلت اللجنة هذه المشكلة؟
kayfa ḥallati l-lajnatu hādhihi l-mushkila(h)?
How did the committee solve this problem?
كيف حال والدتك اليوم؟
kayfa ḥālu wālidatika l-yawm?
How is your mother today?
In كيف حال والدتك؟, كيف asks for the predicate and حال is nominative as the subject of the nominal clause; والدتك completes the construct phrase “your mother’s condition.” The attached ـك here addresses one man. When speaking to a woman, its pronunciation is ـكِ, though ordinary unvocalized spelling remains the same.
كيف may also evaluate a possibility, especially with a following imperfect: “How can...?” Context and intonation distinguish a genuine request for a method from rhetorical disbelief.
كيف يمكننا تقليل وقت الانتظار؟
kayfa yumkinunā taqlīlu waqti l-intiẓār?
How can we reduce the waiting time?
كيف عرفت الخبر بهذه السرعة؟
kayfa ʿarafti l-khabara bi-hādhihi s-surʿa(h)?
How did you learn the news so quickly? (Addressed to one woman.)
Word order and intonation
Neutral formal information questions front the interrogative. The rest of the clause retains Arabic order and agreement. A wh-question commonly gives early prominence to the interrogative and ends with a falling contour, although punctuation still uses ؟. Leaving the word at the end is possible as an echo—“You went where?”—but that is marked (informal/echo use) rather than the neutral pattern taught here.
Compare a statement with its question; the subject does not leap across an auxiliary:
تصل الحافلة عند الثامنة. متى تصل الحافلة؟
taṣilu l-ḥāfilatu ʿinda th-thāmina(h). matā taṣilu l-ḥāfila(h)?
The bus arrives at eight. When does the bus arrive?
تعمل ليلى في المختبر. أين تعمل ليلى؟
taʿmalu laylā fī l-mukhtabar. ʾayna taʿmalu laylā?
Layla works in the laboratory. Where does Layla work?
The question removes the requested constituent and puts the interrogative at the left edge; the verbal core is unchanged.
Give the requested kind of answer
أين سنلتقي؟ أمام المدخل الرئيسي.
ʾayna sanaltaqī? ʾamāma l-madkhali r-raʾīsiyy.
Where will we meet? In front of the main entrance.
متى ينتهي الدوام؟ عند الخامسة.
matā yantahī d-dawām? ʿinda l-khāmisa(h).
When does the workday end? At five.
كيف أرسلت الملف؟ بالبريد الإلكتروني.
kayfa ʾarsalta l-malaff? bi-l-barīdi l-ʾilikturūniyy.
How did you send the file? By email.
These fragments are complete conversational answers because the question supplies the omitted clause. نعم would not answer the requested place, time, or method.
Common Mistakes
Adding do or did
❌ أين فعلت تعمل أمس؟
Incorrect—Arabic does not insert فعل as do-support.
✅ أين عملت خلال العطلة؟
ʾayna ʿamilta khilāla l-ʿuṭla(h)?
Where did you work during the vacation?
Copying English inversion
❌ متى المدير سيصل؟
Incorrect as a neutral event question—the Arabic future verb normally precedes its subject here.
✅ متى سيصل المدير إلى المكتب؟
matā sayaṣilu l-mudīru ʾilā l-maktab?
When will the director arrive at the office?
Dropping a required spatial preposition
❌ أين عدت القاهرة؟
Incorrect for ‘Where did you return from?’—the origin requires من.
✅ من أين عدت إلى المدينة؟
min ʾayna ʿudta ʾilā l-madīna(h)?
Where did you return to the city from?
Replacing a content answer with yes
❌ متى يبدأ العرض؟ نعم.
Incorrect—نعم cannot supply the requested time.
✅ متى تبدأ الجلسة؟ بعد عشر دقائق.
matā tabdaʾu l-jalsa(h)? baʿda ʿashri daqāʾiq.
When does the session begin? In ten minutes.
Using Latin punctuation
❌ كيف وصلت إلى هنا?
Incorrect typography—use the Arabic question mark ؟.
✅ كيف وجدت عنواننا؟
kayfa wajadta ʿunwānanā?
How did you find our address?
Key Takeaways
- أين requests place, متى time, and كيف manner or condition.
- Front the interrogative in a neutral formal question, then keep ordinary Arabic clause order.
- Tense and agreement remain on the verb; Arabic adds no dummy do.
- Keep من، إلى، منذ، حتى before the interrogative when they specify origin, destination, or boundary.
- A short answer supplies a place, time, or manner phrase—not simply نعم.
