Prepositions plus Question Words

When “what?” is the complement of a preposition, formal Arabic can fuse the preposition with interrogative ما and delete its final alif: بِمَ “with what/by what?”, لِمَ “for what/why?”, and عَمَّ “about what?” The resulting short forms are compact (formal) and frequent in questions, headlines, and edited prose. More transparent alternatives with ماذا—such as بماذا and عن ماذا—are also standard.

The contraction does not erase syntax. The preposition still governs its interrogative complement, the whole prepositional phrase still fills an ordinary argument or adjunct role, and the answer normally repeats the same preposition. Arabic fronts that whole unit; it does not strand a preposition at the end as English often does.

When the complement is a selected member of a set rather than “what,” review أيّ as an Inflected Question Determiner.

The contraction: preposition + ما, without the alif

The core spelling operation is simple: attach the preposition and remove the alif of interrogative ما. With عن and من, the final ن assimilates to the following م, producing a doubled م in pronunciation.

SourceContracted formMeaning
بِـ + مابِمَwith/by what?
لِـ + مالِمَfor what? why?
عَنْ + ماعَمَّabout what?
مِنْ + مامِمَّfrom/of what?
في + مافِيمَin what? with regard to what?
على + ماعَلَامَon what? on what basis?
إلى + ماإِلَامَto what? to what end?

In ordinary unvocalized writing, بم and لم do not show their final short a, and عم does not show its shadda. Grammar supplies the reading. This genuine ambiguity is one reason a writer may choose the expanded form when maximum transparency matters.

بم فتحت الصندوق؟

bima fataḥta ṣ-ṣundūqa?

What did you open the box with? (Addressed to one man.)

عم تبحثين في الأرشيف؟

ʿamma tabḥathīna fī l-ʾarshīfi?

What are you searching for in the archive? (Addressed to one woman.)

مم صنعت هذه الطاولة؟

mimma ṣuniʿat hādhihi ṭ-ṭāwilatu?

What was this table made from?

The feminine ending in تبحثين belongs to the verb. The feminine singular passive صنعت agrees with هذه الطاولة. Contraction affects neither form.

💡
Keep the spelling operation and the syntax separate in your mind: the alif of ما disappears, but the preposition and its grammatical relation remain fully present.

No do-support and no inversion

To form the Arabic question, start from a clause containing the prepositional phrase, replace the unknown complement with ما, contract it where appropriate, and front the whole prepositional unit. The rest of the clause keeps ordinary order.

فتح الفني الباب بهذا المفتاح.

fataḥa l-fanniyyu l-bāba bi-hādhā l-miftāḥ.

The technician opened the door with this key.

بم فتح الفني الباب؟

bima fataḥa l-fanniyyu l-bāba?

What did the technician open the door with? (The verb–subject order is unchanged.)

English introduces did and leaves with at the end. Arabic does neither. بم occupies the instrument position, while the clause remains فتح الفني الباب.

The same principle applies when the prepositional phrase is selected by the verb rather than added as an optional circumstance:

فيم تفكر اللجنة الآن؟

fīma tufakkiru l-lajnatu l-ʾāna?

What is the committee thinking about now?

The verb فكر في requires في for this meaning. Fronting فيم preserves that valency. A different preposition can create a different relation, so the learner must memorize the verb together with its preposition.

Short and expanded standard alternatives

Contemporary MSA also uses ماذا after a preposition. One-letter بـ joins it as بماذا, while independent prepositions remain separate: عن ماذا، في ماذا، إلى ماذا. These expanded forms are often clearer in ordinary formal communication.

بماذا بررت الشركة التأخير؟

bi-mādhā barrarati sh-sharikatu t-taʾkhīra?

How did the company justify the delay? (Literally, with what?)

عن ماذا تحدثت في المقابلة؟

ʿan mādhā taḥaddathta fī l-muqābalati?

What did you talk about in the interview?

إلى ماذا تشير هذه الأرقام؟

ʾilā mādhā tushīru hādhihi l-ʾarqāmu?

What do these figures indicate?

بمَ and بماذا are not different cases; both are complements of بـ. The difference is stylistic and morphological compactness. عمَّ is more compressed and formal than transparent عن ماذا. Neither version licenses English-style preposition stranding.

The short لِمَ normally means “why?” and is especially common in concise formal style. It must be distinguished from negative لَمْ:

لم غيرت رأيك؟

lima ghayyarta raʾyaka?

Why did you change your mind? (Concise formal question.)

لم لم تغيري رأيك بعد الاجتماع؟

lima lam tughayyirī raʾyaki baʿda l-ijtimāʿi?

Why didn't you change your mind after the meeting? (First لم = why; second لم = past negator; addressed to one woman.)

The first is لِمَ, a contracted prepositional interrogative. The second لَمْ governs the jussive, deleting the mood nūn from تغيرين. The identical unvocalized base letters make grammatical analysis essential.

People, things, and inflected أيّ

Interrogative ما/ماذا asks about a thing, action, reason, or proposition. For a person, use من after the preposition: بمن، لمن، عن من/عمن، مع من. For a choice from a named set, use inflected أيّ; its case is genitive after the preposition.

بمن استعنت لإصلاح الجهاز؟

bi-mani staʿanta li-ʾiṣlāḥi l-jihāzi?

Whom did you ask for help repairing the device?

بأي برنامج حللت البيانات؟

bi-ʾayyi barnāmajin ḥallalta l-bayānāti?

With which program did you analyze the data? (Genitive أيِّ after بـ.)

أيّ is not indeclinable. The whole phrase بأي برنامج is governed by بـ, so careful reading requires أَيِّ. Its visible position at the beginning does not make it nominative.

Resumptive alternatives

Formal Arabic can avoid a long fronted dependency by placing a broad interrogative expression first and using a resumptive pronoun inside a relative clause. This is especially useful when the relation is embedded or contrastive.

ما الموضوع الذي تحدثت عنه في الاجتماع؟

mā l-mawḍūʿu lladhī taḥaddathta ʿanhu fī l-ijtimāʿi?

What is the subject that you spoke about in the meeting? (Resumptive ـه after عن.)

من الخبيرة التي استعنت بها في التحليل؟

mani l-khabīratu llatī staʿanta bihā fī t-taḥlīli?

Who is the expert you asked for help with the analysis? (Resumptive بها.)

The clitics ـه and ـها keep the prepositional role inside the relative clause. Dropping them would leave تحدث عن or استعان بـ without the complement required for the intended meaning. The direct form عم تحدثت؟ is shorter; the resumptive form is heavier and often more suitable when the questioned noun is explicitly named (formal).

Answers preserve the relation

A prepositional question requests a prepositional constituent. The shortest natural answer therefore repeats the preposition, unless a full clause makes the relation explicit in another way.

بم كتبت الملاحظة؟ بقلم رصاص.

bima katabta l-mulāḥaẓata? bi-qalami raṣāṣ.

What did you write the note with? With a pencil.

عم سأل المدير؟ عن موعد التسليم.

ʿamma saʾala l-mudīru? ʿan mawʿidi t-taslīm.

What did the director ask about? About the delivery date.

بأيهم اتصلت؟ بالمهندسة الجديدة.

bi-ʾayyihimi ttaṣalta? bi-l-muhandisati l-jadīda(h).

Which of them did you contact? The new engineer.

The answer supplies exactly the requested instrument, topic, or person. نعم is not a content answer.

💡
Use the answer as a diagnostic. If the answer is عن الموعد, ask عمَّ؟ or عن ماذا؟. If it is بالهاتف, ask بمَ؟ or بماذا؟.

Register and spelling choices

The contracted forms are standard, not colloquial (formal). بمَ، لِمَ، عَمَّ are common enough to learn actively; فِيمَ، عَلَامَ، إِلَامَ، حَتَّامَ occur more readily in elevated prose, rhetoric, and fixed questions (formal/literary). In straightforward administrative or instructional prose, في ماذا and إلى ماذا may be clearer.

Regional varieties have their own question words, preposition combinations, and pronunciations (regional). Do not import those forms into an MSA exercise without a label.

Common Mistakes

Adding do-support or changing ordinary clause order

❌ بم فعل المدير فتح الملف؟

Incorrect—Arabic adds no dummy فعل and does not invert a subject around an auxiliary.

✅ بم فتح المدير الملف المشفر؟

bima fataḥa l-mudīru l-malaffa l-mushaffara?

What did the director use to open the encrypted file?

Retaining the alif in a claimed short contraction

❌ بما بررت قرارك؟

Incorrect for the intended contracted بِمَ; بما is read bimā and can mean ‘by/with that which’ in a relative use.

✅ بم بررت قرارك؟

bima barrarta qarāraka?

What did you use to justify your decision?

Using a Latin question mark or misreading أيّ

❌ بأي طريق عدت إلى المدينة?

bi-ʾayyu ṭarīqin ʿudta ʾilā l-madīna

Incorrect punctuation and case reading—use ؟, and read genitive ʾayyi after بـ.

✅ بأي طريق عدت إلى المدينة؟

bi-ʾayyi ṭarīqin ʿudta ʾilā l-madīnati?

By which route did you return to the city?

Stranding the preposition

❌ ماذا تتحدث اللجنة عن؟

Incorrect in neutral formal MSA—the preposition must accompany the interrogative or a resumptive clitic.

✅ عم تتحدث اللجنة في جلستها المغلقة؟

ʿamma tataḥaddathu l-lajnatu fī jalsatihā l-mughlaqati?

What is the committee discussing in its closed session?

Answering a negative content question with نعم

❌ لم لم تصلح الجهاز؟ نعم.

Incorrect—the first لم asks why and the second negates; نعم neither supplies the requested reason nor safely resolves the negative wording.

✅ لم لم تصلح الجهاز؟ لعدم توفر القطعة البديلة.

lima lam tuṣliḥi l-jihāza? li-ʿadami tawaffuri l-qiṭʿati l-badīla(h).

Why didn't you repair the device? Because the replacement part was unavailable.

Key Takeaways

  • Contracted ما loses its alif after a preposition: بِمَ، لِمَ، عَمَّ، مِمَّ، فِيمَ.
  • عن and من assimilate their ن to م, producing a pronounced doubled م.
  • Expanded بماذا، عن ماذا، في ماذا are also standard and often more transparent.
  • Front the entire prepositional phrase; never strand the preposition.
  • Keep ordinary verb order, agreement, and case, and repeat the relation in the answer.
  • A resumptive form such as ما الموضوع الذي تحدثت عنه؟ preserves the preposition inside a relative clause.
