English packs several meanings into forms such as one by one, twice, threefold, and two per person. Modern Standard Arabic keeps them distinct. Repeating an accusative numeral gives a distributive reading—واحدًا واحدًا “one by one.” The noun مرة counts repetitions, لكل sets a per-unit rate, and ضعف/أضعاف compares one quantity with another.
These constructions still obey the cardinal-number systems inside them. ثلاث مرات uses the form selected by feminine مرة; ثلاثة أضعاف uses the opposite form because ضعف is masculine. Learning the entire governed phrase prevents a superficially similar English expression from selecting the wrong Arabic pattern. If the citation forms or 3–10 polarity are not yet secure, review Numbers 0–10 in Isolation before building these distributive phrases.
Repeated numerals: one by one, two by two
A repeated numeral in the accusative functions adverbially and tells how participants are arranged or how an action is distributed. The two copies normally match one another in gender and case.
دخل الزوار القاعة واحدا واحدا.
dakhala z-zuwwāru l-qāʿata wāḥidan wāḥidā.
The visitors entered the hall one by one.
تحدثت الباحثات واحدة واحدة.
taḥaddathati l-bāḥithātu wāḥidatan wāḥida(h).
The female researchers spoke one by one.
The masculine group selects واحدًا واحدًا; the explicitly feminine group selects واحدةً واحدةً. These forms are accusative because they describe the manner or distributive arrangement of the event, not because either numeral is a direct object.
For pairs or larger groups, repeat the appropriate cardinal. With two, the adverbial form is oblique اثنين اثنين or feminine اثنتين اثنتين. With 3–10, choose the polarity form according to the understood singular member noun.
جلس الطلاب اثنين اثنين حول كل طاولة.
jalasa ṭ-ṭullābu thnayni thnayni ḥawla kulli ṭāwila(h).
The students sat two at a time around each table.
تحركت الفرق ثلاثا ثلاثا بين المحطات.
taḥarrakati l-firaqu thalāthan thalāthan bayna l-maḥaṭṭāt.
The teams moved between the stations three at a time.
Here the understood unit behind ثلاثًا ثلاثًا is feminine فرقة, so the numeral lacks ـة. In fully written formal prose, repeating the numeral is clearer than relying on punctuation or a slash.
Counting repetitions with مرة
Use مرة “time/occurrence” when the question is how many times an event happened. One follows as an agreeing adjective; two is built into the dual; 3–10 take a plural genitive; 11–99 take a singular accusative.
| Frequency | Arabic phrase | Structure |
|---|---|---|
| once | مرة واحدة | singular + agreeing one |
| twice | مرتين | accusative/genitive dual |
| three times | ثلاث مرات | polarity numeral + plural genitive |
| eleven times | إحدى عشرة مرة | compound numeral + singular accusative |
| twenty times | عشرين مرة | oblique decade + singular accusative |
راجعت المترجمة النص مرتين قبل إرساله.
rājaʿati l-mutarjimatu n-naṣṣa marratayni qabla ʾirsālih.
The translator reviewed the text twice before sending it.
The duration-like adverbial is accusative dual مرتين. After a preposition it has the same oblique form: على مرتين “in two installments.” Only a nominative subject would show مرتان.
اختبر الفريق النظام ثلاث مرات خلال أسبوع واحد.
ʾikhtabara l-farīqu n-niẓāma thalātha marrātin khilāla ʾusbūʿin wāḥid.
The team tested the system three times in one week.
Because مرة is feminine, three is ثلاث without ـة, and مرات is plural genitive. The whole frequency expression is adverbial accusative, making ثلاثَ accusative.
أعيد القياس إحدى عشرة مرة للتأكد من النتيجة.
ʾuʿīda l-qiyāsu ʾiḥdā ʿashrata marratan li-t-taʾakkudi mina n-natīja(h).
The measurement was repeated eleven times to verify the result.
ضغط الفني الزر عشرين مرة أثناء الاختبار.
ḍaghaṭa l-fanniyyu z-zirra ʿishrīna marratan ʾathnāʾa l-ikhtibār.
The technician pressed the button twenty times during the test.
The decade takes accusative عشرين, while singular مرةً is its accusative specification. A plural after twenty would incorrectly extend the 3–10 rule.
Per and for each with لكل
لكل consists of لـ “for/to” plus genitive كل in an iḍāfa. The unit being used as the basis of distribution follows in the genitive: لكل طالبٍ “for each student,” لكل أسرةٍ “per family.” The allocated quantity forms a separate numeral phrase.
خصصت المدرسة كتابين لكل طالب.
khaṣṣaṣati l-madrasatu kitābayni li-kulli ṭālib.
The school allocated two books to each student.
يحق لكل أسرة ثلاث تذاكر في الشهر.
yaḥiqqu li-kulli ʾusratin thalāthu tadhākira fī sh-shahr.
Each family is entitled to three tickets per month.
In the second example, the allocated phrase ثلاث تذاكر is the delayed nominative subject: ثلاثُ is nominative. Feminine تذكرة selects ثلاث, and its diptote plural تذاكرَ is genitive with fatḥa.
Rates can also use لكل after a measured statistic:
سجل التقرير ٢٫٤ طبيبا لكل ألف نسمة.
sajjala t-taqrīru thnayni fāṣila ʾarbaʿa ṭabīban li-kulli ʾalfi nasama(h).
The report recorded 2.4 doctors per thousand inhabitants.
The decimal quantity and لكل ألف نسمة are separate layers. After كل, ألف is genitive; نسمة is singular genitive as the specification of one thousand. The digit sequence ٢٫٤ remains 2.4 in an RTL line.
Double, twice as much, and multiples
ضعف is a masculine noun meaning a multiple or an equal additional amount. In comparisons, ضعفُ ما كان commonly means “twice what it was.” Its plural أضعاف is counted in the normal way: ثلاثة أضعاف، خمسة أضعاف.
أصبح الإنتاج ضعف ما كان عليه العام الماضي.
ʾaṣbaḥa l-ʾintāju ḍiʿfa mā kāna ʿalayhi l-ʿāma l-māḍī.
Production became twice what it was last year.
تستهلك الآلة القديمة ثلاثة أضعاف كمية الطاقة.
tastahliku l-ʾālatu l-qadīmatu thalāthata ʾaḍʿāfi kammiyyati ṭ-ṭāqa(h).
The old machine consumes three times the amount of energy.
Masculine ضعف selects ثلاثة. The complete multiple phrase is the direct object, so the numeral is accusative ثلاثةَ; plural أضعافِ is genitive and itself governs كميةِ الطاقة.
ضاعفت الشركة السعة مرتين، فأصبحت أربعة أضعاف السعة الأصلية.
ḍāʿafati sh-sharikatu s-siʿata marratayni, fa-ʾaṣbaḥat ʾarbaʿata ʾaḍʿāfi s-siʿati l-ʾaṣliyya(h).
The company doubled capacity twice, so it became four times the original capacity.
This example exposes an important mathematical difference: performing a doubling twice produces four times the starting value. Arabic مرتين counts the two operations; أربعة أضعاف describes the final ratio.
A compact decision guide
| Meaning | Choose | Model |
|---|---|---|
| members arranged in groups | repeated accusative numeral | واحدا واحدا |
| number of occurrences | مرة / مرتان / مرات | ثلاث مرات |
| allocation per unit | لكل + genitive | قلمان لكل طالب |
| quantity compared with a baseline | ضعف / أضعاف | ثلاثة أضعاف الكمية |
Common Mistakes
Leaving repeated distributives nominative
❌ دخل المشاركون واحد واحد.
Incorrect in fully inflected MSA — repeated distributive numerals are adverbial accusatives.
✅ دخل المشاركون واحدا واحدا بعد فتح الباب.
dakhala l-mushārikūna wāḥidan wāḥidan baʿda fatḥi l-bāb.
The participants entered one by one after the door opened.
Applying masculine polarity to feminine مرة
❌ راجعت الطلب ثلاثة مرات.
Incorrect — مرة is feminine, so three uses ثلاث.
✅ راجعت الطلب ثلاث مرات قبل إرساله.
rājaʿtu ṭ-ṭalaba thalātha marrātin qabla ʾirsālih.
I reviewed the application three times before sending it.
Keeping مرة plural after eleven
❌ تكرر التنبيه إحدى عشرة مرات.
Incorrect — 11–99 take singular accusative مرة.
✅ تكرر التنبيه إحدى عشرة مرة خلال التجربة.
takarrara t-tanbīhu ʾiḥdā ʿashrata marratan khilāla t-tajriba(h).
The alert recurred eleven times during the experiment.
Missing oblique case on twelve or a decade
❌ اشتمل التدريب على اثنتا عشرة جولة وثلاثون تكرارا.
Incorrect — after على, twelve and the coordinated decade both require oblique forms.
✅ اشتمل التدريب على اثنتي عشرة جولة وثلاثين تكرارا.
ʾishtamala t-tadrību ʿalā thnatay ʿashrata jawlatan wa-thalāthīna tikrārā.
The training comprised twelve rounds and thirty repetitions.
Reversing a per-unit figure in RTL text
❌ المعدل ٢ لكل ٥ يعني خمسة لكل اثنين.
Incorrect — the figure remains two per five; RTL context does not exchange its terms.
✅ المعدل ٢ لكل ٥ يعني اثنين لكل خمسة.
ʾal-muʿaddalu thnāni li-kulli khamsa(h) yaʿnī thnayni li-kulli khamsa(h).
The rate 2 per 5 means two for every five.
Key Takeaways
- Repeated accusative numerals describe distribution: واحدًا واحدًا، اثنين اثنين، ثلاثًا ثلاثًا.
- Count occurrences with feminine مرة: مرة واحدة، مرتين، ثلاث مرات، إحدى عشرة مرة، عشرين مرة.
- لكل + genitive sets the denominator or recipient of a rate; the allocated quantity is a separate governed phrase.
- ضعف ما كان means twice the baseline, while ثلاثة أضعاف counts masculine ضعف and therefore uses ثلاثة.
- Repeated operations and final multiples are not identical: doubling twice yields four times the starting quantity.
