Arabic frequently packages two coordinated words as one conventional rhetorical unit: أخذ ورد “back-and-forth,” ليل نهار “day and night,” سرا وعلنا “in private and in public,” and شكلا ومضمونا “in form and substance.” Such pairs are called binomials. Their grammar is ordinary coordination, but repeated use fixes their order, conjunction, case pattern, and discourse effect.
The crucial distinction is between a productive coordination frame and a lexicalized pair. Arabic can freely coordinate two new nouns with و, yet the familiar binomial inside that frame is not freely editable. Reversing أخذ ورد or replacing one member with a dictionary synonym may remain interpretable while losing the expression Arabic readers expect.
English has the same phenomenon in law and order, give and take, and sooner or later. The individual words are easy; conventional control lies in knowing which one comes first and what the pair does as a whole. Longer inherited sayings build on the same rhythmic resources; see Proverbs in Contemporary Formal Arabic.
Four recurring shapes
Binomials appear in several grammatical frames. The frame is productive; the highlighted lexical members may be fixed.
| Shape | Example | Variable material | Function |
|---|---|---|---|
| X وY | أخذ ورد؛ سرا وعلنا | article and case, possessive suffixes, outside modifiers | addition, contrast, total range |
| X Y without a conjunction | ليل نهار؛ صباح مساء | usually only the surrounding clause | continuous repetition or duration |
| X أم Y | عاجلا أم آجلا | the clause it modifies | two alternatives exhausting the possibilities |
| preposition + X وY | في السراء والضراء | subject and predicate outside the pair | one preposition scopes over both members |
| head + X وY | حقوق الموظفين وواجباتهم | the shared referent of a suffix or complement | ellipsis avoids repeating recoverable material |
This table is a substitution guide, not an invitation to rewrite the expressions internally. You can change who works ليل نهار or what will happen عاجلا أم آجلا. You normally do not replace نهار with a near-synonym or reverse عاجلا أم آجلا.
أخذ ورد: a process, not literal taking and returning
In بعد أخذ ورد, both nouns are verbal nouns used as a conventional pair. Literally they evoke taking and returning; in context the pair means repeated exchange, debate, or negotiation. English usually says “after some back-and-forth.”
اتفق الطرفان على الصيغة النهائية بعد أخذ ورد
ittafaqa ṭ-ṭarafāni ʿalā ṣ-ṣīghati n-nihāʾiyyati baʿda ʾakhdhin wa-radd
The two sides agreed on the final wording after some back-and-forth. (formal; nonliteral)
After بعد, أخذ is genitive as the first term of an iḍāfa-like temporal phrase, and coordinated رد matches its case in a fully inflected reading. The semantic unit can also take the article when treated as a discourse topic:
طال الأخذ والرد في الاجتماع، فقرر الرئيس تأجيل التصويت
ṭāla l-ʾakhdhu wa-r-raddu fī l-ijtimāʿi, fa-qarrara r-raʾīsu taʾjīla t-taṣwīt
The back-and-forth in the meeting dragged on, so the chair decided to postpone the vote. (formal)
The two coordinated nouns are still visible, but together they name one extended process. That semantic unity explains singular طال before the pair naturally; ordinary verb-first agreement also favors a singular verb before a following coordinated subject.
ليل نهار and asyndetic rhythm
ليل نهار omits و. In adverbial use it means continually, “day and night” or “around the clock.” Its compactness supplies rhythm and emphasis.
عملت فرق الإنقاذ ليل نهار حتى وصلت إلى القرية المعزولة
ʿamilat firaqu l-ʾinqādhi layla nahār ḥattā waṣalat ʾilā l-qaryati l-maʿzūla(h)
The rescue teams worked day and night until they reached the isolated village. (formal/news)
The pair functions adverbially; it is not the direct object of عملت. A natural English translation may be worked around the clock, which is not a word-for-word rendering.
The parallel صباح مساء means repeatedly, morning and evening. It is more rhetorical than a precise schedule; a timetable should state actual times.
يتابع الأطباء حالة الطفل صباح مساء
yutābiʿu l-ʾaṭibbāʾu ḥālata ṭ-ṭifli ṣabāḥa masāʾ
The doctors monitor the child's condition morning and evening. (formal; rhetorically compact)
Adding و—صباحا ومساء—is also established and often clearer in ordinary informational prose. A conjunctionless pair is therefore a choice of phraseology and rhythm, not a general rule that Arabic omits و between time words.
Parallel case creates rhetorical balance
Many fixed pairs consist of two accusative adverbials. Matching morphology is part of their rhythm: قولا وفعلا، سرا وعلنا، شكلا ومضمونا، ذهابا وإيابا.
دعم المدير مبادرة الموظفين قولا وفعلا في كل مرحلة
daʿama l-mudīru mubādarata l-muwaẓẓafīna qawlan wa-fiʿlan fī kulli marḥala(h)
The manager supported the employees' initiative in word and deed at every stage. (formal/rhetorical)
At a natural final pause, the last ending is not sounded, while the internal first member retains its case ending. The underlying syntactic parallel remains.
The pair سرا وعلنا is best where both modes genuinely contrast, as in expressing an opinion or offering support:
عارض عدد من الأعضاء الاقتراح سرا وعلنا
ʿāraḍa ʿadadun mina l-ʾaʿḍāʾi l-iqtirāḥa sirran wa-ʿalanan
A number of members opposed the proposal both privately and publicly. (formal)
تغير المشروع شكلا ومضمونا بعد المشاورات العامة
taghayyara l-mashrūʿu shaklan wa-maḍmūnan baʿda l-mushāwarāti l-ʿāmma(h)
The project changed in both form and substance after the public consultations. (formal/academic)
The two specifications tell us along which dimensions the project changed. English inserts in; Arabic uses direct accusative specifications and no copied preposition.
Fixed order and semantic direction
Order is rarely random. Arabic often moves from earlier to later (عاجلا أم آجلا), near to far (من قريب أو بعيد), or outward form to inner content (شكلا ومضمونا). Cultural frequency then fixes that order even when logic would permit the reverse.
ستظهر آثار القرار عاجلا أم آجلا في الأشهر المقبلة
sataẓharu ʾāthāru l-qarāri ʿājilan ʾam ʾājilan fī l-ʾashhuri l-muqbila(h)
The effects of the decision will appear sooner or later in the coming months. (formal)
أم here does not ask an information question. The two alternatives exhaust the scale and jointly imply inevitability. آجلا أم عاجلا would be understandable, but it deliberately disrupts the familiar cadence.
لم يشارك في الحملة من قريب أو بعيد
lam yushārik fī l-ḥamlati min qarībin ʾaw baʿīd
He had no involvement in the campaign whatsoever. (formal; literally, ‘from near or far’)
The preposition من scopes over the whole pair. Repeating it—من قريب أو من بعيد—is grammatically possible when each alternative is independently contrasted, but the fixed idiom normally omits the second من.
Ellipsis without ambiguity
Coordination regularly leaves shared material unspoken. In حقوق الموظفين وواجباتهم, the suffix ـهم on واجباتهم points back to الموظفين; Arabic need not repeat واجبات الموظفين. In ذهابا وإيابا بين المدينتين, one route phrase modifies both directions.
تشرح اللائحة حقوق الموظفين وواجباتهم بعبارات واضحة
tashraḥu l-lāʾiḥatu ḥuqūqa l-muwaẓẓafīna wa-wājibātihim biʿibārātin wāḍiḥa(h)
The regulations explain employees' rights and duties in clear terms. (formal)
يسافر القطار ذهابا وإيابا بين المدينتين أربع مرات يوميا
yusāfiru l-qiṭāru dhahāban wa-ʾiyāban bayna l-madīnatayni ʾarbaʿa marrātin yawmiyyan
The train makes four round trips between the two cities each day. (timetable/formal)
English compresses the pair to round trip. Arabic keeps the two directions overt. Ellipsis is successful because the shared route and frequency have the same relation to both members. When coordination would permit two readings, repeat the preposition or noun instead of pursuing elegance.
Register and rhetorical weight
Pairs such as ذهابا وإيابا and أخذ ورد are normal contemporary formal MSA. Others are elevated. غدوا ورواحا “morning and evening” belongs mainly to literary or Classical-flavored prose (literary/Classical); using it in a simple office notice creates unnecessary archaism. Fixed coordination is especially effective in speeches, headlines, essays, and carefully balanced prose. Several pairs in every sentence sound mannered.
شهدت المفاوضات مدا وجزرا قبل إعلان الاتفاق
shahidati l-mufāwaḍātu maddan wa-jazran qabla ʾiʿlāni l-ittifāq
The negotiations went through ebbs and flows before the agreement was announced. (formal/news; figurative)
The sea image is lexicalized but still rhetorically visible. It is more vivid than neutral مرت المفاوضات بمراحل صعبة “the negotiations went through difficult stages.” Register choice is part of mastery, not an afterthought.
Common Mistakes
Reversing a conventional order
⚠️ اتفقا بعد رد وأخذ
ittafaqā baʿda raddin wa-ʾakhdh
They agreed after a ‘return-and-taking.’ (Grammatical words, but a deliberately reversed and nonconventional order.)
اتفقا بعد أخذ ورد استمر أكثر من ساعة
ittafaqā baʿda ʾakhdhin wa-raddin istamarra ʾakthara min sāʿa(h)
They agreed after more than an hour of back-and-forth. (Established order.)
Reading coordinated nouns with unmatched case
❌ بعد أخذ ورد
baʿda ʾakhdhan wa-raddun
Incorrect case reading—بعد governs genitive أخذٍ, and coordinated ردٍّ matches it.
✅ بعد أخذ ورد، وافق الطرفان على التعديل المقترح
baʿda ʾakhdhin wa-raddin, wāfaqa ṭ-ṭarafāni ʿalā t-taʿdīli l-muqtaraḥ
After some back-and-forth, both parties accepted the proposed amendment. (Case is made audible here.)
Inserting an English-style preposition before an Arabic adverbial pair
❌ تغير النظام في شكلا ومضمونا
Incorrect case frame—في requires genitive nouns, whereas the fixed adverbial pair شكلا ومضمونا appears without the preposition.
✅ تغير النظام شكلا ومضمونا خلال عام واحد
taghayyara n-niẓāmu shaklan wa-maḍmūnan khilāla ʿāmin wāḥid
The system changed in form and substance within a single year.
Treating a fixed pair as a synonym exercise
❌ عمل الموظفون مساء ضحى لإنهاء المشروع
Invented pairing—near-synonyms cannot be substituted freely for the fixed duration pairs.
✅ عمل الموظفون ليل نهار لإنهاء المشروع في موعده
ʿamila l-muwaẓẓafūna layla nahār liʾinhāʾi l-mashrūʿi fī mawʿidih
The employees worked day and night to finish the project on schedule.
Presenting a literary pair as plain office language
سيراجع الموظف البريد غدوا ورواحا
sayurājiʿu l-muwaẓẓafu l-barīda ghuduwwan wa-rawāḥan
The employee will check the mail morning and evening. (grammatical but literary/Classical-flavored for an office instruction)
سيراجع الموظف البريد صباحا ومساء
sayurājiʿu l-muwaẓẓafu l-barīda ṣabāḥan wa-masāʾ
The employee will check the mail in the morning and evening. (neutral formal MSA)
Key Takeaways
- A binomial uses productive coordination syntax but conventional lexical members, order, and rhythm.
- أخذ ورد names back-and-forth discussion; ليل نهار functions adverbially without و.
- Parallel case matters: coordinated members normally share the syntactic case demanded by the larger phrase.
- One preposition, complement, or referent may have scope over both members when the relation is unambiguous.
- Translate the pair's discourse function, label literary pairs, and resist both word-for-word English calques and free synonym substitution.
