English requires am, is, or are between a subject and a present description. Formal contemporary Modern Standard Arabic does not: المكتب هادئ is a complete sentence, “The office is quiet.” English speakers therefore tend to insert يكون or هو into every present statement, even when Arabic has already formed a complete subject–predicate relation.
The reusable repair is to ask what the extra word contributes. If it contributes no time, modality, subordination, contrast, or identification, remove it. يكون is a real inflected verb, not a filler; هو، هي، هم are real pronouns, not forms of “to be.”
Present affirmative predication needs no copula
The ordinary pattern is a subject followed by a predicate. The predicate may be an adjective, a noun, or a prepositional phrase.
الطريق مزدحم هذا الصباح.
aṭ-ṭarīqu muzdaḥimun hādhā ṣ-ṣabāḥ.
The road is crowded this morning.
نادية محامية في شركة دولية.
nādiyatu muḥāmiyatun fī sharikatin dawliyya(h).
Nadia is a lawyer at an international company.
المفاتيح في الدرج العلوي.
al-mafātīḥu fī d-durji l-ʿulwiyy.
The keys are in the top drawer.
Arabic is not “dropping” an underlying يكون from these sentences. It forms present affirmative predication by juxtaposition. The present nominal sentence explains its full range; the error page gives you a rapid repair.
Six wrong-to-right repairs
Each incorrect example shows English transfer. Some outputs are unacceptable for the intended neutral statement; others are grammatical only under a marked habitual or contextual reading.
❌ المدير يكون مشغولا في مكتبه الآن.
Incorrect as a neutral present report — yakūnu adds an unlicensed verbal frame.
✅ المدير مشغول الآن ولا يستطيع الرد.
al-mudīru mashghūlun al-ʾāna wa-lā yastaṭīʿu r-radd.
The director is busy now and cannot reply.
❌ ليلى تكون مهندسة معمارية.
Incorrect for simple classification — the profession is a nominal predicate and needs no yakūnu.
✅ ليلى مهندسة معمارية تعمل في عمان.
laylā muhandisatun miʿmāriyyatun taʿmalu fī ʿammān.
Layla is an architect who works in Amman.
❌ الاجتماع يكون في القاعة الشرقية.
Incorrect for a straightforward present location — the prepositional phrase can be the predicate directly.
✅ الاجتماع في القاعة الشرقية بعد الظهر.
al-ijtimāʿu fī l-qāʿati sh-sharqiyyati baʿda ẓ-ẓuhr.
The meeting is in the eastern hall in the afternoon.
❌ هذا يكون التقرير النهائي.
Incorrect for present identification — yakūnu does not separate two definite expressions in neutral MSA.
✅ هذا هو التقرير النهائي المعتمد من اللجنة.
hādhā huwa t-taqrīru n-nihāʾiyyu l-muʿtamadu mina l-lajna(h).
This is the final report approved by the committee.
❌ الجو هو بارد قرب الساحل.
Incorrect — huwa is not an English-style ‘is,’ and the indefinite adjective already serves as predicate.
✅ الجو بارد قرب الساحل هذا المساء.
al-jawwu bāridun qurba s-sāḥili hādhā l-masāʾ.
The weather is cold near the coast this evening.
❌ هي تكون مستعدة للمقابلة.
Incorrect for an ordinary current state — hiya is the subject and must be followed directly by its predicate.
✅ هي مستعدة للمقابلة منذ الصباح.
hiya mustaʿiddatun lil-muqābalati mundhu ṣ-ṣabāḥ.
She has been ready for the interview since morning.
The corrections are proved by clause structure: each subject already has a valid noun, adjective, or phrase predicate. Adding يكون changes the construction; adding هو may create a second pronoun with no coherent role.
Minimal contrast 1: zero copula versus licensed يكون
Present يكون is grammatical when another element independently licenses it. A time subordinator can introduce a recurring condition:
المكتب هادئ في الصباح.
al-maktabu hādiʾun fī ṣ-ṣabāḥ.
The office is quiet in the morning. (Neutral present statement.)
أراجع التقارير عندما يكون المكتب هادئا.
ʾurājiʿu t-taqārīra ʿindamā yakūnu l-maktabu hādiʾan.
I review the reports when the office is quiet. (Subordinate habitual condition.)
The second sentence is not an exception meaning “Arabic sometimes needs is.” يكون heads a subordinate clause after عندما and gives the clause a recurring or contingent frame. Modal قد يكون “may be,” future سيكون “will be,” and negative لن يكون “will not be” likewise contribute real meaning.
قد يكون التأخير بسبب الطقس.
qad yakūnu t-taʾkhīru bi-sababi ṭ-ṭaqs.
The delay may be due to the weather.
Minimal contrast 2: classification versus identification
An indefinite predicate classifies. A definite predicate often uses an agreeing separating pronoun to make identification clear:
سلمى طبيبة.
salmā ṭabība(h).
Salma is a doctor. (Classification.)
سلمى هي الطبيبة المناوبة الليلة.
salmā hiya ṭ-ṭabībatu l-munāwibatu l-layla(h).
Salma is the doctor on duty tonight. (Identification.)
هي agrees with feminine Salma and separates two definite expressions. It does not mean “is.” Change the subject and the pronoun changes: خالد هو الطبيب المناوب. This is the pronoun of separation, not a copular verb.
Past, future, and negation are legitimate contrasts
The zero-copula pattern has a present-affirmative default. Past predication uses كان; an explicit future copula uses سيكون; and straightforward present negation commonly uses ليس. A future time adverb can also locate a nominative zero-copula schedule statement in the future—المكتب مفتوح غدا can mean “the office is open tomorrow”—so the time word alone does not mechanically force سيكون.
كان المطعم مزدحما أمس.
kāna l-maṭʿamu muzdaḥiman ʾams.
The restaurant was crowded yesterday.
سيكون المطعم هادئا بعد التاسعة.
sa-yakūnu l-maṭʿamu hādiʾan baʿda t-tāsiʿa(h).
The restaurant will be quiet after nine.
المطعم ليس مفتوحا اليوم.
al-maṭʿamu laysa maftūḥan al-yawm.
The restaurant is not open today.
These overt words add time or polarity and affect the case of a one-word predicate. See Past and Future Copular Sentences for the full system.
Dialectal يكون is not a license for neutral MSA filler
Some spoken varieties use descendants of كان/يكون in habitual, conditional, or discourse-specific patterns more often than neutral formal MSA does (regional: varies by region). A learner may hear a form resembling b-yikūn and transfer it into every MSA present sentence. That mixes systems.
The correct lesson is not “dialect is wrong.” Each regional variety has its own grammar. In a formal MSA paragraph, choose MSA clause structure consistently; in dialectal conversation, follow the relevant regional pattern rather than manufacturing a hybrid sentence.
Mixed diagnostic set
Decide whether the bold relationship needs zero copula, a separator, or a real verb:
| Meaning | Best MSA frame | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| The room is ready now. | الغرفة جاهزة الآن | present affirmative adjective predicate |
| This is the room we reserved. | هذه هي الغرفة التي حجزناها | definite identification; feminine separator |
| The room was ready yesterday. | كانت الغرفة جاهزة أمس | past time licenses كانت |
| Call me when the room is ready. | اتصل بي عندما تكون الغرفة جاهزة | subordinate time clause licenses تكون |
| The room is not ready. | الغرفة ليست جاهزة | present negation uses ليست |
اتصل بي عندما تكون الغرفة جاهزة لاستقبال الضيوف.
ittaṣil bī ʿindamā takūnu l-ghurfatu jāhizatan li-stiqbāli ḍ-ḍuyūf.
Call me when the room is ready to receive the guests. (Addressed to one man.)
Editing a paragraph
❌ مكتبنا يكون صغيرا، لكنه هو قريب من المحطة، والمديرة تكون سعيدة بالموقع.
Incorrect — three English-style copulas obscure ordinary present descriptions.
✅ مكتبنا صغير، لكنه قريب من المحطة، والمديرة سعيدة بالموقع الجديد.
maktabunā ṣaghīr, lakinnahu qarībun mina l-maḥaṭṭati, wa-l-mudīratu saʿīdatun bi-l-mawqiʿi l-jadīd.
Our office is small, but it is near the station, and the director is happy with the new location.
The edited paragraph keeps ـه in لكنه because that suffix genuinely resumes مكتبنا. It removes يكون and predicate هو because neither added a grammatical meaning.
Common Mistakes
1. Translating every English is as يكون
❌ الحاسوب يكون بطيئا اليوم.
Incorrect for a simple current observation — no verbal frame licenses yakūnu.
✅ الحاسوب بطيء اليوم بعد التحديث.
al-ḥāsūbu baṭīʾun al-yawma baʿda t-taḥdīth.
The computer is slow today after the update.
2. Using هو as an invariant copula
❌ مريم هو المديرة الجديدة.
Incorrect — huwa is masculine and cannot be an invariant word for ‘is.’
✅ مريم هي المديرة الجديدة للقسم.
maryamu hiya l-mudīratu l-jadīdatu lil-qism.
Maryam is the department's new director.
3. Adding a separator before an indefinite predicate
❌ زيد هو طالب مجتهد في الجامعة.
Incorrect as neutral classification — the indefinite predicate should follow Zayd directly.
✅ زيد طالب مجتهد في كلية الطب.
zaydun ṭālibun mujtahidun fī kulliyyati ṭ-ṭibb.
Zayd is a diligent student in the medical school.
4. Removing a genuinely licensed copula
❌ غدا المكتب مفتوحا حتى المساء.
Incorrect — without sa-yakūnu, the one-word nominal predicate would be nominative maftūḥun; the written accusative alif in maftūḥan announces a missing governor.
✅ غدا سيكون المكتب مفتوحا حتى المساء.
ghadan sa-yakūnu l-maktabu maftūḥan ḥattā l-masāʾ.
Tomorrow the office will be open until evening.
Repair procedure
- Identify the time and polarity: present affirmative, past, future, or negative.
- For present affirmative, place the subject directly before its noun, adjective, or phrase predicate.
- Keep يكون only when a future marker, modal, subordinator, or habitual frame licenses it.
- Use an agreeing separator only for clear definite identification or focus.
- Recheck agreement and case after any form of كان or ليس.
Key Takeaways
- Neutral present affirmative MSA uses subject–predicate juxtaposition, not a form of “to be.”
- يكون is grammatical when it contributes tense, modality, subordination, or another real verbal function.
- هو، هي، هما، هم are pronouns; as separators they agree with the subject and clarify definite identification.
- Dialectal copular patterns belong to particular regional systems and should not be inserted indiscriminately into formal MSA.
