Writing الـ as a Separate Word

English writes the as a separate word. Arabic الـ is a prefix: it attaches directly to a noun or adjective, so الكتاب is one written word. English-speaking beginners often type ال كتاب, then apply the same spacing to attached conjunctions and prepositions. The result may remain guessable, but it is not standard Arabic orthography.

The reusable repair is to build one orthographic word from right to left in layers: host كتاب, article الكتاب, then any one-letter clitic والكتاب، بالكتاب، للكتاب. Pronunciation may assimilate or delete a vowel, but spelling follows the morphological pieces, not an English word count.

The article belongs to its host

Arabic spacing does not mirror translation. English the new report is three words; Arabic التقرير الجديد is two written words, because each instance of الـ attaches to the word it makes definite.

التقرير الجديد على مكتب المديرة.

at-taqrīru l-jadīdu ʿalā maktabi l-mudīra(h).

The new report is on the director's desk.

The article on التقرير begins the utterance, so its initial vowel is heard; الجديد follows a vowel, so hamzat al-waṣl is not pronounced. In both places the spelling stays attached. The complete spelling pattern is developed on Writing the Definite Article الـ.

💡
Count Arabic orthographic words, not English meanings. الكتاب contains article + noun but no space; الكتاب الجديد contains two hosts, and each attached article stays with its own host.

Six wrong-to-right repairs

1. Separating the article from a noun

❌ وجدت ال مفتاح تحت الطاولة.

Incorrect spelling — al- must attach directly to miftāḥ.

✅ وجدت المفتاح تحت الطاولة في المطبخ.

wajadtu l-miftāḥa taḥta ṭ-ṭāwilati fī l-maṭbakh.

I found the key under the table in the kitchen.

2. Separating the article from an adjective

❌ قرأت التقرير ال قصير أولا.

Incorrect spelling — a definite attributive adjective takes its own attached article.

✅ قرأت التقرير القصير أولا قبل الملحق.

qaraʾtu t-taqrīra l-qaṣīra ʾawwalan qabla l-mulḥaq.

I read the short report first, before the appendix.

3. Dropping written lām before a sun letter

❌ انتظرنا اشمس بعد المطر.

Incorrect spelling — sun-letter assimilation never deletes the written lām of the article.

✅ انتظرنا الشمس بعد المطر في الحديقة.

intaẓarnā sh-shamsa baʿda l-maṭari fī l-ḥadīqa(h).

We waited for the sun after the rain in the garden.

4. Detaching conjunction و

❌ قرأت المقدمة و الخاتمة مساء.

Incorrect spelling — the one-letter conjunction wa- attaches to the following word.

✅ قرأت المقدمة والخاتمة مساء في المنزل.

qaraʾtu l-muqaddimata wa-l-khātimata masāʾan fī l-manzil.

I read the introduction and the conclusion at home in the evening.

5. Detaching prepositional بـ

❌ أرسلت الوثائق ب البريد السريع.

Incorrect spelling — bi- is a one-letter clitic and joins the article and noun.

✅ أرسلت الوثائق بالبريد السريع صباحا.

ʾarsaltu l-wathāʾiqa bi-l-barīdi s-sarīʿi ṣabāḥan.

I sent the documents by express mail in the morning.

6. Keeping article alif after prepositional لـ

❌ هذا المكتب لالمدير الجديد.

Incorrect spelling — li- plus al- contracts orthographically to للـ, not لالـ.

✅ هذا المكتب للمدير الجديد في الطابق الثاني.

hādhā l-maktabu li-l-mudīri l-jadīdi fī ṭ-ṭābiqi th-thānī.

This office is for the new director on the second floor.

These errors share one cause: English treats articles, conjunctions, and common prepositions as separate words. Arabic writes certain grammatical items as clitics attached to a lexical host.

Minimal contrast 1: moon spelling and sun pronunciation

Before a moon letter, article lām is written and pronounced:

ظهر القمر فوق الجبل.

ẓahara l-qamaru fawqa l-jabal.

The moon appeared above the mountain.

Before a sun letter, lām remains written but assimilates in speech:

ظهرت الشمس خلف السحاب.

ẓaharati sh-shamsu khalfa s-saḥāb.

The sun appeared behind the clouds.

Both words begin with written الـ: القمر، الشمس. The spoken contrast is l-qamar versus sh-shams. If the mistake is pronunciation rather than spelling, record it as a reading error:

❌ الشمس مشرقة اليوم.

al-shamsu mushriqatun al-yawm

Incorrect pronunciation — lām assimilates to the following sun letter shīn.

✅ الشمس مشرقة اليوم فوق المدينة.

ash-shamsu mushriqatun al-yawma fawqa l-madīna(h).

The sun is shining over the city today.

Spelling and pronunciation supply different information. The article's morphology preserves ل; phonology doubles the sun letter. Review the sound classes on Sun and Moon Letters.

💡
Never “spell what you hear” by deleting lām before a sun letter. Write الـ; put assimilation in the vocalized form and in pronunciation.

Minimal contrast 2: لبيت versus للبيت

Prepositional لـ attaches whether the noun is indefinite or definite. Definiteness determines the spelling:

اخترنا بابا لبيت قديم في القرية.

ikhtarnā bāban li-baytin qadīmin fī l-qarya(h).

We chose a door for an old house in the village.

اخترنا بابا للبيت القديم في القرية.

ikhtarnā bāban li-l-bayti l-qadīmi fī l-qarya(h).

We chose a door for the old house in the village.

لبيت is لـ + بيت “for a house.” للبيت is لـ + الـ + بيت “for the house”: the article's alif disappears after prepositional لـ, but both lām consonants are represented. The contracted spelling does not mean that definiteness disappeared.

Build the clitic chain

The common one-letter elements و، ف، ب، ك، ل attach before the article. Most preserve the article's alif; prepositional لـ deletes it.

AnalysisCorrect spellingConnected reading
و + الـ + كتابوالكتابwa-l-kitāb
ف + الـ + بابفالبابfa-l-bāb
ب + الـ + بريدبالبريدbi-l-barīd
ك + الـ + بحركالبحرka-l-baḥr
ل + الـ + بيتللبيتli-l-bayt
ل + الـ + ضيفللضيفli-ḍ-ḍayf

وصل الضيف، فالمضيف مستعد لاستقباله.

waṣala ḍ-ḍayfu, fa-l-muḍīfu mustaʿiddun li-stiqbālihi.

The guest arrived, so the host is ready to receive him.

The connective فـ attaches to المضيف. In other contexts it can mean “so” or “then”; attachment is orthographic and does not by itself determine the discourse meaning.

Legitimate spaces: not every preposition is a clitic

Full words such as في، من، إلى، على، مع remain separate from the following definite noun:

انتقلت من المكتب إلى القاعة مع الفريق.

intaqaltu mina l-maktabi ʾilā l-qāʿati maʿa l-farīq.

I moved from the office to the hall with the team.

Writing منالمكتب or فيالقاعة overapplies the attachment rule. Learn the short attaching set rather than deleting all spaces near the article. The Attached Clitics page develops longer chains and suffixes.

Mixed diagnostic set

Choose whether to attach, contract, or keep a space:

PiecesResultOperation
الـ + مدرسةالمدرسةattach article
و + الـ + مدرسةوالمدرسةattach conjunction and article
ب + الـ + مدرسةبالمدرسةattach preposition and article
ل + الـ + مدرسةللمدرسةattach and delete article alif
في + الـ + مدرسةفي المدرسةkeep full preposition separate
الـ + دراسةالدراسةkeep written lām; pronounce assimilation

ذهبت بالسيارة إلى المدرسة، فالطريق بعيد.

dhahabtu bi-s-sayyārati ʾilā l-madrasati, fa-ṭ-ṭarīqu baʿīd.

I went to the school by car because it is a long way.

This one sentence contrasts attached بالسيارة, separate إلى المدرسة, and attached فالطريق. Sun-letter assimilation affects bi-s-sayyāra and fa-ṭ-ṭarīq without changing the written article.

Editing a paragraph

❌ وصلت إلى ال مكتب، و فتحت ال نافذة، ثم أرسلت التقرير ب البريد لالمدير.

Incorrect — the paragraph separates the article and attached clitics, and fails to contract li- plus al-.

✅ وصلت إلى المكتب، وفتحت النافذة، ثم أرسلت التقرير بالبريد للمدير.

waṣaltu ʾilā l-maktabi, wa-fataḥtu n-nāfidhata, thumma ʾarsaltu t-taqrīra bi-l-barīdi li-l-mudīr.

I arrived at the office, opened the window, and then sent the report by mail to the director.

The edit preserves spaces after full إلى and ثم, attaches و and بـ, joins each article to its host, and contracts لـ + الـ to للـ.

Common Mistakes

1. Treating الـ as an independent word

❌ ال كتاب ال جديد على الطاولة.

Incorrect — each article must attach to its noun or adjective.

✅ الكتاب الجديد على الطاولة قرب النافذة.

al-kitābu l-jadīdu ʿalā ṭ-ṭāwilati qurba n-nāfidha(h).

The new book is on the table near the window.

2. Spelling a sun-letter pronunciation

❌ وصلت اسيارة أمام المبنى.

Incorrect — pronunciation assimilation does not remove lām from the written article.

✅ وصلت السيارة أمام المبنى الرئيسي.

waṣalati s-sayyāratu ʾamāma l-mabnā r-raʾīsiyy.

The car arrived in front of the main building.

3. Detaching a one-letter preposition

❌ التقيت به ب المطار صباحا.

Incorrect — bi- attaches to the definite noun; only the pronoun object is already attached to the first bi-.

✅ التقيت به بالمطار صباحا قبل الرحلة.

iltaqaytu bihi bi-l-maṭāri ṣabāḥan qabla r-riḥla(h).

I met him at the airport in the morning before the flight.

4. Joining a full preposition as if it were a clitic

❌ الملف فيالخزانة بجانب الباب.

Incorrect — fī is an independent word and must be separated from al-khizāna.

✅ الملف في الخزانة بجانب الباب الداخلي.

al-milaffu fī l-khizānati bi-jānibi l-bābi d-dākhiliyy.

The file is in the cabinet beside the inner door.

Repair procedure

  1. Identify the lexical host: noun or adjective.
  2. Attach الـ directly to that host.
  3. Preserve written lām before both moon and sun letters; change only the pronunciation.
  4. Attach preceding و، ف، ب، ك، ل; with prepositional لـ, delete the article's alif and write للـ.
  5. Keep full prepositions such as في، من، إلى، على، مع as separate words.

Key Takeaways

  • الـ is an attached prefix, never an independent space-delimited word.
  • Sun-letter assimilation changes pronunciation, not the spelling of the article.
  • One-letter clitics attach outside the article: والـ، فالـ، بالـ، كالـ.
  • Prepositional لـ + الـ contracts to للـ, while full prepositions remain separate.
