The neutral Arabic phrase for “this book” is هذا الكتاب: the demonstrative comes first, and the noun is definite. By contrast, هذا كتاب is normally a complete nominal sentence meaning “this is a book.” That small article difference decides whether the noun identifies what is being pointed to or says what the pointed object is.
English uses this book without the, so adding الـ feels redundant to English speakers. Arabic treats the demonstrative and the article as doing different jobs: هذا points, while الكتاب forms the definite noun that matches the pointing expression.
Neutral demonstrative phrases
The demonstrative agrees with the noun in grammatical gender and number. The following noun is definite when demonstrative plus noun form one referring phrase.
| Category | Near demonstrative | Example |
|---|---|---|
hādhā t-taqrīru wāḍiḥ.
This report is clear.
هذه السيارة متاحة للإيجار.
hādhihi s-sayyāratu mutāḥatun li-l-ʾījār.
This car is available for rent.
قابلت هذين الباحثين في المؤتمر.
qābaltu hādhayni l-bāḥithayni fī l-muʾtamar.
I met these two researchers at the conference.
For nonhuman plurals, agreement is normally feminine singular. Thus هذه الكتب, not هؤلاء الكتب. هؤلاء is the ordinary choice for plural human referents.
هؤلاء المهندسون جاهزون، وهذه الأجهزة جاهزة أيضا.
hāʾulāʾi l-muhandisūna jāhizūna, wa-hādhihi l-ʾajhizatu jāhizatun ʾayḍā.
These engineers are ready, and these devices are ready too.
Phrase versus sentence
Compare the following minimal pair:
هذا كتاب مفيد.
hādhā kitābun mufīd.
This is a useful book.
هذا الكتاب مفيد.
hādhā l-kitābu mufīd.
This book is useful.
In the first, هذا is the subject and كتاب مفيد is an indefinite predicate phrase. In the second, هذا الكتاب is one definite subject phrase and مفيد is its predicate. Arabic has no present-tense copula to separate these roles, so definiteness performs essential structural work.
An attributive adjective inside the demonstrative phrase must also be definite:
هذا الكتاب الجديد مفيد للطلاب.
hādhā l-kitābu l-jadīdu mufīdun li-ṭ-ṭullāb.
This new book is useful for students.
هذا الكتاب جديد ومفيد للطلاب.
hādhā l-kitābu jadīdun wa-mufīdun li-ṭ-ṭullāb.
This book is new and useful for students.
The detailed modifier–predicate contrast appears in Definiteness Agreement on Adjectives.
Postnominal demonstratives
Formal MSA can place a demonstrative after a definite noun phrase, but this is not the neutral default after a simple noun. الكتاب هذا can be used with marked deictic or contrastive force—roughly “this particular book”—yet هذا الكتاب is the safer neutral order. Postnominal demonstratives are much more frequent in several regional dialects; that dialect frequency should not be mistaken for the unmarked formal baseline.
In formal prose, postnominal placement is especially useful after a definite iḍāfa chain. It makes clear that the demonstrative modifies the completed construct:
كتاب الطالب هذا مفقود.
kitābu ṭ-ṭālibi hādhā mafqūd.
This book of the student's is missing. (Marked formal structure.)
قرار اللجنة هذا يحتاج إلى مراجعة.
qarāru l-lajnati hādhā yaḥtāju ʾilā murājaʿa(h).
This decision by the committee needs review. (Formal.)
Preposing هذا before the same construct can instead favor a clause analysis: هذا كتاب الطالب commonly means “This is the student's book.” Postposition keeps the entire iḍāfa together and adds the demonstrative after it.
Other sources of definiteness
A possessive suffix already makes its noun definite. A following demonstrative can be postnominal and emphatic: كتابي هذا “this book of mine.” Do not add الـ before a noun with a possessive suffix.
كتابي هذا يحتوي على ملاحظاتي.
kitābī hādhā yaḥtawī ʿalā mulāḥaẓātī.
This book of mine contains my notes.
A definite demonstrative phrase can also serve as the antecedent of a relative clause:
هذا التقرير الذي أرسلته المديرة دقيق.
hādhā t-taqrīru lladhī ʾarsalat-hu l-mudīratu daqīq.
This report that the manager sent is accurate.
The relative pronoun belongs to the definite referring expression; it does not replace the article on التقرير.
Discourse and generic reference
A demonstrative normally directs attention to an identifiable referent, whether physically present, visible in a document, or already introduced.
وصل اقتراح جديد صباحا. هذا الاقتراح يحتاج إلى تمويل.
waṣala qtirāḥun jadīdun ṣabāḥā. hādhā l-iqtirāḥu yaḥtāju ʾilā tamwīl.
A new proposal arrived this morning. This proposal needs funding.
Generic classes behave differently: Arabic often uses الـ where English has a bare plural, as in الهواتف الذكية مفيدة “Smartphones are useful.” A demonstrative narrows that class to identifiable members: هذه الهواتف الذكية “these smartphones.”
Common Mistakes
Leaving the noun indefinite in the intended demonstrative phrase
❌ هذا كتاب مفيد للطلاب.
Incorrect for the intended meaning “this book is useful”; without al-, it means “this is a useful book.”
✅ هذا الكتاب مفيد للطلاب.
hādhā l-kitābu mufīdun li-ṭ-ṭullāb.
This book is useful for students.
For the identification sentence “this is a new car,” use هذه سيارة جديدة; do not insert واحدة as an English-style indefinite article.
Omitting definiteness on an attributive adjective
❌ هذا التقرير جديد مهم.
Incorrect for “this important new report” — both attributive adjectives must be definite.
✅ هذا التقرير الجديد المهم وصل اليوم.
hādhā t-taqrīru l-jadīdu l-muhimmu waṣala l-yawm.
This important new report arrived today.
Putting the article on an iḍāfa head
❌ الكتاب الطالب هذا مفقود.
Incorrect — the nonfinal construct noun cannot take al-.
✅ كتاب الطالب هذا مفقود.
kitābu ṭ-ṭālibi hādhā mafqūd.
This book of the student's is missing.
Using human plural agreement for things
❌ هؤلاء الكتب مفيدة.
Incorrect — a nonhuman plural normally takes the feminine singular demonstrative hādhihi.
✅ هذه الكتب مفيدة.
hādhihi l-kutubu mufīda(h).
These books are useful.
Copying English bare-plural generic usage
❌ هواتف ذكية تغير طريقة العمل.
Incorrect for a statement about the generic class — formal MSA normally makes this class phrase definite.
✅ الهواتف الذكية تغير طريقة العمل.
al-hawātifu dh-dhakiyyatu tughayyiru ṭarīqata l-ʿamal.
Smartphones change the way people work.

- هذا كتاب is normally the sentence “this is a book.”
- Human plurals use هؤلاء; nonhuman plurals normally use feminine singular هذه.
- Postnominal demonstratives are marked after simple nouns but useful after a completed definite iḍāfa.
