Degree expressions answer “to what extent?” جدًّا strengthens an adjective or description: مهمّ جدًّا “very important.” للغاية gives a strong “extremely/to an extreme degree,” especially in careful or written language. إلى حدّ ما moves in the other direction and means “somewhat/to some extent.” These expressions do not agree with the adjective or noun around them, and their position helps identify what they modify.
English normally puts very before an adjective. Arabic normally places جدًّا after the adjective or adjectival phrase. This reversal is simple but essential: translating the English order word by word produces unnatural Arabic. The Adjective Scope page extends the placement problem to coordinated and stacked descriptions.
The three core expressions are not the same form
| Expression | Force | Grammatical form | Typical register |
|---|---|---|---|
| جدًّا | very | lexicalized accusative | neutral/formal |
| للغاية | extremely | prepositional phrase: لـ + الغاية | formal/written, also careful speech |
| إلى حدّ ما | somewhat, to some extent | prepositional expression | neutral/formal hedging |
All three perform an adverbial degree function, but their internal grammar differs. جدًّا is conventionally accusative; الغايةِ is genitive after لـ; حدٍّ is genitive after إلى. “Degree adverb” is therefore a meaning label, not one morphological class.
التقرير مهم جدا لاتخاذ القرار النهائي.
at-taqrīru muhimmun jiddan li-ttikhādhi l-qarāri n-nihāʾiyy.
The report is very important for making the final decision.
كانت تكاليف الإصلاح مرتفعة للغاية هذا العام.
kānat takālīfu l-ʾiṣlāḥi murtafiʿatan li-l-ghāyati hādhā l-ʿām.
Repair costs were extremely high this year.
The predicate adjective changes for case and agreement: مهمٌّ is nominative in the present nominal sentence, while مرتفعةً is the accusative predicate of كانت and feminine singular for the nonhuman plural تكاليف. The intensifiers do not copy those features.
جدا follows the adjective or description
With an attributive adjective, place جدًّا after the adjective, not between the noun and adjective. The adjective still agrees with its noun in gender, number, definiteness, and case.
توصل الفريق إلى حل عملي جدا للمشكلة.
tawaṣṣala l-farīqu ʾilā ḥallin ʿamaliyyin jiddan li-l-mushkila(h).
The team arrived at a very practical solution to the problem.
حلٍّ عمليٍّ is genitive after إلى, so the adjective is genitive too. جدًّا remains unchanged. It intensifies عمليّ, not the noun حلّ independently.
The same placement follows a predicate adjective:
غرفة الانتظار صغيرة جدا في ساعات الذروة.
ghurfatu l-intiẓāri ṣaghīratun jiddan fī sāʿāti dh-dhirwa(h).
The waiting room is very small during peak hours.
Do not place جدًّا before صغيرة to mirror English very small. In neutral MSA, the Arabic order is adjective first, intensifier second.
للغاية: strong degree with a formal flavor
للغاية can follow adjective predicates, participles, and certain manner descriptions. It is strong: use it when “extremely” is genuinely intended, not merely as a more elegant spelling of جدًّا.
الإجراءات الجديدة معقدة للغاية بالنسبة إلى الشركات الصغيرة.
al-ʾijrāʾātu l-jadīdatu muʿaqqadatun li-l-ghāyati bi-n-nisbati ʾilā sh-sharikāti ṣ-ṣaghīra(h).
The new procedures are extremely complicated for small companies.
تحدث الخبير ببطء شديد، فكان شرحه واضحا للغاية.
taḥaddatha l-khabīru bi-buṭʾin shadīdin, fa-kāna sharḥuhu wāḍiḥan li-l-ghāya(h).
The expert spoke very slowly, so his explanation was extremely clear.
The first clause uses ببطء شديد—a prepositional manner phrase whose genitive adjective means “intense/great.” The second uses predicate adjective واضحًا plus degree phrase للغاية. English translates both with degree language, but the Arabic structures are not interchangeable word for word.
إلى حد ما: calibrated rather than strong
إلى حدّ ما softens a claim. It is valuable in analysis, professional feedback, and polite disagreement because it presents a property as partial rather than absolute (formal/neutral).
إلى حد ما نجحت الخطة، لكنها لم تخفض التكاليف.
ʾilā ḥaddin mā najaḥati l-khuṭṭatu, lakinnahā lam tukhaffiḍi t-takālīf.
To some extent, the plan succeeded, but it did not reduce costs. (Clause-wide qualification.)
نجحت الخطة في تحسين الخدمة إلى حد ما خلال الصيف.
najaḥati l-khuṭṭatu fī taḥsīni l-khidmati ʾilā ḥaddin mā khilāla ṣ-ṣayf.
The plan succeeded in improving the service somewhat during the summer. (Late degree qualification.)
Initial placement gives the limitation wide scope over the assessment “the plan succeeded.” Later placement attaches it more directly to the degree of improvement. Context may blur that distinction, so technical prose should rephrase if two readings would have different consequences.
Degree with actions and manner
Not every English very + adverb maps to جدًّا. With event manner, Arabic often prefers a prepositional phrase plus an adjective: بسرعة كبيرة “very quickly,” بعناية شديدة “very carefully,” or بوضوح تام “with complete clarity.”
استجاب فريق الدعم بسرعة كبيرة للبلاغ العاجل.
istajāba farīqu d-daʿmi bi-surʿatin kabīratin li-l-balāghi l-ʿājil.
The support team responded very quickly to the urgent report.
عرضت الباحثة النتائج بوضوح تام أمام اللجنة.
ʿaraḍati l-bāḥithatu n-natāʾija bi-wuḍūḥin tāmmin ʾamāma l-lajna(h).
The researcher presented the results with complete clarity before the committee.
Compare an adjective describing a thing:
اتخذ الفريق قرارا سريعا بعد المكالمة.
ittakhadha l-farīqu qarāran sarīʿan baʿda l-mukālama(h).
The team made a quick decision after the call. (سريعا modifies قرارا.)
The adjective سريعًا does not mean “quickly” merely because it is accusative; it agrees with the accusative noun قرارًا. To describe the manner of deciding, choose بسرعة or بسرعة كبيرة.
Frequency and degree measure different dimensions
Frequency says how often; degree says how strongly. One sentence may contain both.
غالبا ما تكون هذه القاعة مزدحمة جدا بعد الظهر.
ghāliban mā takūnu hādhihi l-qāʿatu muzdahimatan jiddan baʿda ẓ-ẓuhr.
This hall is often very crowded in the afternoon.
غالبًا measures the frequency of the crowded state; جدًّا measures its intensity. Replacing one with the other changes the question answered.
Focus and the reach of a degree claim
A degree expression usually stays adjacent to the adjective it intensifies. A focus particle such as فقط should instead stay beside the audience, time, or section it restricts.
كان العرض واضحا جدا للخبراء فقط.
kāna l-ʿarḍu wāḍiḥan jiddan li-l-khubarāʾi faqaṭ.
The presentation was very clear only to the experts. (The audience is restricted.)
كان العرض واضحا فقط في الجزء الأخير.
kāna l-ʿarḍu wāḍiḥan faqaṭ fī l-juzʾi l-ʾakhīr.
The presentation was clear only in the final section. (The location of clarity is restricted.)
The first claim is intense but limited to experts; the second limits where clarity held and makes no “very” claim. Placement distinguishes degree from focus scope.
Register choices
جدًّا is the broadly useful default in neutral formal MSA. للغاية is common in edited prose, reports, and emphatic evaluation (formal). إلى حدّ ما is a measured hedge suited to analysis and diplomacy (formal/neutral). إلى حدّ بعيد means “to a great extent” and is stronger, especially in analytical prose (formal). These labels describe tendencies, not rigid bans: a speaker can naturally use all of them in careful conversation.
Common Mistakes
Copying English pre-adjective order
❌ التقرير جدا مهم للمفاوضات.
Incorrect neutral order—جدا normally follows the adjective it intensifies.
✅ التقرير مهم جدا لنجاح المفاوضات.
at-taqrīru muhimmun jiddan li-najāḥi l-mufāwaḍāt.
The report is very important to the success of the negotiations.
Making an adjective into a manner adverb by agreement
❌ شرحت الباحثة الفكرة واضحة جدا.
Incorrect for ‘The researcher explained the idea very clearly’—واضحة agrees like an adjective but does not form the intended manner expression.
✅ شرحت الباحثة الفكرة بوضوح شديد للحاضرين.
sharaḥati l-bāḥithatu l-fikrata bi-wuḍūḥin shadīdin li-l-ḥāḍirīn.
The researcher explained the idea very clearly to those present.
Making جدا agree with a feminine or plural adjective
❌ النتائج مهمة جدات للفريق.
Incorrect—جدا is invariant; it does not take feminine or plural agreement from مهمة.
✅ النتائج مهمة جدا للفريق في هذه المرحلة.
an-natāʾiju muhimmatun jiddan li-l-farīqi fī hādhihi l-marḥala(h).
The results are very important to the team at this stage.
Putting فقط beside the degree word instead of its intended target
❌ كانت الخدمة سريعة فقط جدا للطلبات العاجلة.
Incorrect and unclear—فقط splits the adjective from its intensifier and leaves the intended restriction unreadable.
✅ كانت الخدمة سريعة جدا للطلبات العاجلة فقط.
kānati l-khidmatu sarīʿatan jiddan li-ṭ-ṭalabāti l-ʿājilati faqaṭ.
The service was very fast only for urgent requests.
