Good instructions do more than list correct imperative forms. They tell the listener where a procedure begins, which actions belong together, what happens next, and when a result becomes available. Urban Lebanese uses a compact discourse toolkit: أول شي “first,” attached و “and,” بعدين “then/after that,” and ساعتها “at that point.”
The same tools work in routes, recipes, workplace procedures, and casual advice (informal and neutral spoken). Their meanings overlap, but they are not interchangeable translations of English then.
A focused command chain across addressees
Object suffixes help a chain stay coherent. Once البندورة “the tomato” has been introduced, feminine ـها tracks it through later actions.
| Addressee | Command chain | Romanization |
|---|---|---|
| one man | اغسل البندورة، قطعها، وحطها بالصحن. | ighsel el-banadōra, ʾaṭṭeʿa, w-ḥoṭṭa biṣ-ṣaḥen. |
| one woman | اغسلي البندورة، قطعيها، وحطيها بالصحن. | ighsle l-banadōra, ʾaṭṭʿīha, w-ḥoṭṭīha biṣ-ṣaḥen. |
| a group | اغسلوا البندورة، قطعوها، وحطوها بالصحن. | ighsalo l-banadōra, ʾaṭṭʿūha, w-ḥoṭṭūha biṣ-ṣaḥen. |
The imperative marks the addressee, while ـها keeps referring to the same feminine object. English it does not reveal gender, and English commands do not mark whether one man, one woman, or a group is addressed. Lebanese does both throughout the sequence.
اغسل البندورة، قطعها، وحطها بالصحن.
ighsel el-banadōra, ʾaṭṭeʿa, w-ḥoṭṭa biṣ-ṣaḥen.
Wash the tomato, cut it up, and put it on the plate. (informal; addressed to one man)
اغسلوهن منيح، وبعدها حطوهن بالمصفاية.
ighsalūhon mnīḥ, w-baʿda ḥoṭṭūhon bil-miṣfēye.
Wash them well, and after that put them in the strainer. (informal; plural addressees and plural objects)
أول شي opens the procedure
أول شي marks the entry point: it tells the listener which action to perform before the rest. It often stands at the beginning of the sentence, followed by a short pause.
أول شي، افتح التطبيق وسجل دخولك.
awwal shī, iftaḥ et-taṭbīʾ w-sazhzhil dkhūlak.
First, open the app and sign in. (informal procedural instruction to one man)
أول شي، تأكدي إنو العنوان صح.
awwal shī, tʾakkade inno l-ʿonwēn ṣaḥḥ.
First, make sure the address is correct. (informal instruction to one woman)
Do not add an MSA adverbial ending to make the phrase sound careful. أول شي is an established spoken organizer. More formal presentations may use أولا or written signposting (formal/mixed), but that is a register choice, not an upgraded imperative grammar.
و groups actions tightly
Attached و joins actions that belong to one local package. It can imply natural order because the world supplies that order—one opens a file before reading it—but و itself mainly coordinates. It does not guarantee “and then.”
افتح الملف واقرا أول صفحتين.
iftaḥ el-malaf w-iʾra awwal ṣafḥtēn.
Open the file and read the first two pages. (informal; tightly linked actions)
خد المفتاح ودير بالك ما تضيعه.
khod el-miftēḥ w-dīr bālak ma tḍayyiʿo.
Take the key, and be careful not to lose it. (informal; action plus warning)
The second و does not mean that being careful begins only after taking the key. The warning applies throughout the later situation. When explicit chronological order matters, add بعدين.
بعدين advances to the next step
بعدين presents a later action as the next stage. It can connect commands, or connect a command to a consequence or planned action.
عبي الطلب، وبعدين ابعته عالإيميل.
ʿabbe ṭ-ṭalab, w-baʿdēn ibʿato ʿal-īmēl.
Fill out the form, and then send it by email. (informal; addressed to one man)
انزلي عالطابق الأرضي، وبعدين اطلعي من الباب الكبير.
inzle ʿaṭ-ṭābeʾ el-arḍe, w-baʿdēn iṭlaʿe min el-bēb el-kbīr.
Go down to the ground floor, then go out through the big door. (informal directions to one woman)
In a long list, بعدين at every clause sounds mechanical. Use it at meaningful stage boundaries; use و for smaller actions inside a stage, and leave obvious order unmarked when the physical procedure makes it clear.
ساعتها means “at that point”
ساعتها anchors the next clause to the state reached after the preceding step: “once that is true / at that point.” It is especially useful before a result, recognition, or conditional next move. It is stronger than a generic “then.”
لف عاليمين عند الإشارة؛ ساعتها بتشوف البنك قدامك.
loff ʿal-yamīn ʿind el-ishēra; sēʿta btshūf el-bank ʾoddēmak.
Turn right at the light; at that point you'll see the bank ahead of you. (informal route instruction)
جرب كلمة السر الجديدة؛ إذا فتحت الصفحة، ساعتها كمل التسجيل.
zharrib kilmit es-serr el-zhdīde; iza fataḥet eṣ-ṣafḥa, sēʿta kammel et-taszhīl.
Try the new password; if the page opens, then continue the registration. (informal; contingent next step)
Notice بتشوف in the first example. It is a b-imperfect prediction of what the listener will see, not another command. A sequence can switch from imperative action to an expected result without forcing every verb into the same form.
Clitic continuity keeps the topic alive
Repeating every full noun makes spoken instructions heavy. Lebanese normally names a definite item once and then resumes it with a gender- and number-matching suffix.
خد هاي الورقة، وقعها، ورجعها للموظفة.
khod hāy el-waraʾa, waʾʾeʿa, w-razhzheʿa lal-mwaẓẓafe.
Take this paper, sign it, and return it to the employee. (informal; feminine object maintained across three commands)
افتح الباب، ثبته منيح، وبعدين مرق الصندوق.
iftaḥ el-bēb, thabbto mnīḥ, w-baʿdēn marreʾ eṣ-ṣondūʾ.
Open the door, secure it well, and then move the box through. (informal; masculine door resumed by ـه)
If a new possible antecedent enters, repeat the noun or choose a fuller phrase. Clitic continuity should reduce repetition, not force the listener to guess what ـها or ـه refers to.
Commands and generic instructions are different choices
A direct imperative addresses the present listener: حط المي عالنار “put the water on the heat.” Lebanese can also use a b-imperfect with generic “you” in demonstrations and recipes: أول شي بتحط المي عالنار “first you put the water on the heat.” The second describes the normal procedure; it is not an imperative with an extra b-prefix.
أول شي حط المي عالنار.
awwal shī ḥoṭṭ el-mayy ʿan-nār.
First, put the water on the heat. (direct instruction to one man)
أول شي بتحط المي عالنار.
awwal shī btiḥoṭṭ el-mayy ʿan-nār.
First, you put the water on the heat. (generic procedural description)
The generic b-imperfect guide develops this instructional use. Do not mix the two analyses: the b-form is descriptive even when it guides behavior.
Affirmative and negative steps
Negative instructions use ما + bare second-person imperfect, not an affirmative imperative and not the ordinary b-imperfect.
لف عاليمين بعد الجسر.
loff ʿal-yamīn baʿd el-zhiser.
Turn right after the bridge. (affirmative route command)
ما تلف عاليمين قبل الجسر.
ma tloff ʿal-yamīn ʾabl el-zhiser.
Don't turn right before the bridge. (negative route command)
A directions dialogue
أول شي اطلع دغري، وبعدين لف عاليسار عند الصيدلية.
awwal shī iṭlaʿ doghre, w-baʿdēn loff ʿal-yasār ʿind eṣ-ṣaydalīye.
Nadine: First go straight, then turn left at the pharmacy. (informal route sequence)
بعد الصيدلية بكمل دغري؟
baʿd eṣ-ṣaydalīye bkammel doghre?
Rami: After the pharmacy, do I keep going straight? (b-imperfect confirmation question)
إيه. كمل شوي؛ ساعتها بتشوف القهوة عإيدك اليمين.
ē. kammel shwayy; sēʿta btshūf el-ʾahwe ʿa-īdak el-yamīn.
Nadine: Yes. Keep going a little; then you'll see the café on your right. (command followed by predicted result)
Common Mistakes
Using b- as though it formed a direct command
❌ وبعدين بتحطها هون.
Wrong for the intended direct order — this b-imperfect describes the procedure rather than commanding the listener.
✅ وبعدين حطها هون.
w-baʿdēn ḥoṭṭa hōn.
And then put it here. (direct command)
Treating و as an explicit “after that” marker
❌ دير بالك وخد المفتاح يعني الحذر بيبلش بعد الأخد.
Incorrect analysis — و coordinates; the warning can cover the whole situation.
✅ خد المفتاح وانتبه ما تضيعه.
khod el-miftēḥ w-intibih ma tḍayyiʿo.
Take the key and be careful not to lose it. (coordinated action and warning)
Losing object gender mid-sequence
❌ خد الورقة، وقعها، ورجعه.
Incorrect — feminine الورقة must remain feminine in the final object suffix.
✅ خد الورقة، وقعها، ورجعها.
khod el-waraʾa, waʾʾeʿa, w-razhzheʿa.
Take the paper, sign it, and return it. (feminine continuity)
Using ساعتها for an unrelated next item
❌ اشتري خبز؛ ساعتها اتصل بأمك.
Awkward without a real connection — ساعتها says the phone call becomes relevant at the bread-buying stage.
✅ اشتري خبز، وبعدين اتصل بأمك.
ishtare khobez, w-baʿdēn ittaṣel b-immak.
Buy bread, and then call your mother. (ordinary chronological sequence)
Forgetting plural addressee marking
❌ يا شباب، اغسل الخضرة وقطعوها.
Incorrect — the first command is singular while the second addresses the group.
✅ يا شباب، اغسلوا الخضرة وقطعوها.
ya shabēb, ighsalo l-khoḍra w-ʾaṭṭʿūha.
Guys, wash the vegetables and cut them up. (plural commands)
Key Takeaways
Use أول شي to open a procedure, و to group closely related actions, بعدين to advance to the next stage, and ساعتها when a result or action becomes relevant at the state just reached. Keep addressee agreement on every imperative and object agreement on every resumed item. Direct imperatives, generic b-imperfect instructions, predicted results, and ما + bare imperfect prohibitions can all occur in one procedure, but they do different grammatical work.
