Original Dialogue: Asking the Way

This original dialogue follows one bounded task: a woman asks a passerby how to reach a library entrance, hears a route in manageable pieces, checks the crucial turn, and closes the encounter. It is set generically in Beirut; the landmarks are invented and do not endorse or reproduce any real map.

Read the whole exchange before studying it. Directions work as a sequence of social actions—not as isolated equivalents of right, left, and straight.

Full dialogue

عفوا، وين أقرب مدخل للمكتبة من هون؟

ʿafwan, wēn aʾrab madkhal lil-maktabe min hōn?

Visitor: Excuse me, where is the nearest entrance to the library from here?

كملي دغري لحد الإشارة، واقطعي الشارع.

kammle doghre la-ḥadd el-ishāra, w-iʾṭaʿe sh-shēreʿ.

Local: Continue straight to the traffic light and cross the street. (addressing one woman)

وبعدين لفي عاليمين عند الفرن.

w-baʿdēn leffe ʿal-yamīn ʿind el-foron.

Local: Then turn right at the bakery.

عند الفرن ولا بعده بشوي؟

ʿind el-foron walla baʿdo b-shwayy?

Visitor: At the bakery, or a little after it? (targeted clarification)

بعده بشوي. بتشوفي هاي البناية الزرقا عيسارك.

baʿdo b-shwayy. btshūfe hāy el-binēye z-zarʾa ʿa-ysārik.

Local: A little after it. You'll see this blue building on your left.

مدخل المكتبة قبالها، حد موقف الباص.

madkhal el-maktabe ʾbēla, ḥadd mawʾaf el-bāṣ.

Local: The library entrance is opposite it, next to the bus stop.

يعني بكمل دغري، بقطع الشارع، وبلف يمين بعد الفرن؟

yaʿne bkammel doghre, bʾṭaʿ esh-shēreʿ, w-bleff yamīn baʿd el-foron?

Visitor: So I continue straight, cross the street, and turn right after the bakery? (candidate understanding)

مظبوط، والمدخل بيكون قبل موقف الباص، مش بعده.

maẓbūṭ, wil-madkhal bykūn ʾabel mawʾaf el-bāṣ, mish baʿdo.

Local: Exactly—and the entrance is before the bus stop, not after it.

وهو بعيد من هون؟

w-huwwe bʿīd min hōn?

Visitor: Is it far from here?

لأ، شي خمس دقايق مشي. إذا وصلتي عالساحة بتكوني قطعتيه.

laʾ, she khames dʾāyeʾ mashe. iza wṣilte ʿas-sāḥa btkūne ʾaṭaʿtīh.

Local: No, about five minutes on foot. If you reach the square, you've passed it.

تمام، صار واضح. يعطيك العافية.

tamēm, ṣār wāḍeḥ. yiʿṭīk el-ʿāfye.

Visitor: Great, it's clear now. Thank you.

الله يعافيكي، أهلا وسهلا.

alla yʿāfīke, ahla w-sahla.

Local: You're welcome.

Line-by-line grammar and interaction

LineForm to noticeWhat it does
1عفوا + وينOpens politely, then asks location without English-style “do” or a present copula.
2كملي، اقطعيFeminine singular imperatives identify the traveler as one woman; لحد anchors the first segment.
3وبعدينAttaches the next maneuver to the completed first segment instead of presenting an unordered list.
4بعدهThe masculine suffix resumes الفرن. Repeating only the uncertain landmark is efficient repair.
5هاي... الزرقاDemonstrative and adjective agree with feminine البناية; عيسارك locates it relative to the traveler.
6قبالها، حدTwo static relations triangulate the entrance from the building and bus stop.
7يعني + b-formsThe visitor converts commands into first-person actions and offers the route back for confirmation.
8مظبوط... مشConfirms the route globally, then contrasts one boundary that could still cause an error.
9بعيد من هونMoves from route geometry to effort and distance.
10شي + amountMarks an estimate; the conditional supplies an overshoot landmark for self-correction.
11–12يعطيك العافية / الله يعافيكيA conventional thanks-response pair closes the encounter without reopening the route.

The implied subjects are recoverable from morphology. Neither speaker needs to repeat إنتي before كملي or أنا before بكمل. English learners who insert pronouns into every line make the exchange heavier and may accidentally add contrast that was never intended.

Why the route arrives in pieces

The local gives one path segment, then a turn. The visitor interrupts at the point of possible ambiguity—عند الفرن ولا بعده؟—before receiving the final static location. This is cooperative turn-taking: asking early prevents a long explanation from being built on a mistaken landmark.

The final confirmation does not repeat the route word for word. It changes viewpoint:

  • the local's كملي، اقطعي، لفي are second-person feminine commands;
  • the visitor's بكمل، بقطع، بلف are first-person b-imperfect forms describing the actions she now expects to perform.
💡
A good confirmation changes commands into your own planned actions. This proves that you have understood both the sequence and who is supposed to do it.

The directions frame page supplies the broader inventory. This text shows how only a few of those resources are selected and ordered in one real exchange.

Landmarks, clitics, and implied reference

Several small endings prevent repetition:

  • بعده = after it, where ـه resumes masculine الفرن;
  • قبالها = opposite it, where ـها resumes feminine البناية;
  • قطعتيه = you passed it, where ـه resumes masculine المدخل.

The suffix gender follows the noun being resumed, not the gender of the speaker. English it hides this information. Mis-segmenting قبالها as an unrelated long word also hides the useful pattern قبال + suffix.

The speaker uses course-baseline هاي with البناية. Common Lebanese هيدي البناية is also natural (regional: Lebanon), but one short interaction should not alternate demonstrative systems without a speaker-based reason.

Alternatives and repair

The opening can be made route-focused rather than location-focused:

لو سمحت، كيف فيني روح على أقرب مدخل للمكتبة؟

law samaḥt, kīf fīne rūḥ ʿala aʾrab madkhal lil-maktabe?

Excuse me, how can I get to the nearest entrance to the library? (alternative route-focused opening)

If the whole turn was unheard, عفوا، شو قلت؟ is appropriate. If only the turn point is uncertain, line 4's targeted alternative is better. The repair page explains why the narrowest adequate repair saves work and sounds attentive.

قصدك بلف قبل الفرن ولا بعده؟

ʾaṣdak bleff ʾabel el-foron walla baʿdo?

Do you mean I turn before the bakery or after it? (candidate repair when the boundary is unclear)

Follow-up transformation task

Start with this route to one woman:

كملي للساحة، اقطعي عند الإشارة، ولفي شمال عند المدرسة.

kammle lis-sāḥa, iʾṭaʿe ʿind el-ishāra, w-leffe shmāl ʿind el-madrase.

Continue to the square, cross at the light, and turn left at the school. (to one woman)

Now make three controlled changes: address one man; replace الساحة with الدوار; replace المدرسة with المستشفى. A correct transformed route is:

كمل للدوار، اقطع عند الإشارة، ولف شمال عند المستشفى.

kammel lid-dawwār, iʾṭaʿ ʿind el-ishāra, w-leff shmāl ʿind el-mostashfa.

Continue to the roundabout, cross at the light, and turn left at the hospital. (to one man)

The task changes gender morphology and landmarks while preserving the discourse sequence.

What this dialogue recycles

  • وين and من هون from the وين question system.
  • Feminine imperatives from imperative formation.
  • عند، حد، قبال، قبل، بعد as spatial anchors.
  • يعني...؟ and contrastive alternatives as repair.
  • هاي + feminine noun + feminine adjective as an agreement chain.
  • شي + number for an approximate distance.

Common Mistakes

Normalizing the colloquial question into formal Arabic

❌ أين يقع أقرب مدخل للمكتبة؟

Register mismatch — grammatical MSA, but not the urban Lebanese dialogue being practiced.

✅ وين أقرب مدخل للمكتبة من هالشارع؟

wēn aʾrab madkhal lil-maktabe min hash-shēreʿ?

Where is the nearest entrance to the library from this street?

Losing addressee agreement mid-route

❌ خدي أول شارع عالشمال وبعدين لف يمين.

Incorrect — the first command addresses a woman, while the second switches to masculine.

✅ خدي أول شارع عالشمال وبعدين لفي يمين عند البلدية.

khode awwal shēreʿ ʿash-shmāl w-baʿdēn leffe yamīn ʿind el-baladiyye.

Take the first street on the left, then turn right at the town hall. (to one woman)

Misreading a resumed landmark

❌ لفي بعد الفرن، وبعدها يعني بعد الفرن كمان.

Incorrect analysis — feminine بعدها cannot resume masculine الفرن in this route.

✅ لفي بعد الفرن، والمدخل بيكون قباله.

leffe baʿd el-foron, wil-madkhal bykūn ʾbēlo.

Turn after the bakery; the entrance will be opposite it.

Adding an unnecessary overt subject

❌ إنتي كملي دغري إنتي لحد الإشارة.

Overexplicit for a neutral instruction — the feminine imperative already identifies the addressee, and repeated إنتي sounds contrastive.

✅ كملي دغري لحد الإشارة واسألي إذا ضعتي.

kammle doghre la-ḥadd el-ishāra w-isʾale iza ḍiʿte.

Continue straight to the light, and ask if you get lost. (to one woman)

Key Takeaways

A natural directions exchange advances one landmark at a time. وين opens the location problem; agreeing imperatives build the route; وبعدين orders its segments; suffixes keep landmarks active; and يعني...؟ lets the traveler test a candidate understanding. Confirmation and a conventional closing show that the route—and the interaction—are complete.
