Lebanese word stress is weight-sensitive: syllables with a long vowel or a closing consonant have more pull than a short open syllable. Stress normally stays within the final three syllables of a word. That makes it much more predictable than English stress, where pairs such as PHOtograph and phoTOGraphy must largely be memorized.
This page gives the (informal, Beirut baseline) pattern. In ordinary examples our romanization does not clutter every word with a stress mark. When stress itself is under discussion, an acute accent marks the stressed vowel: máktabe. On a long vowel, the acute is added without removing the length mark: maʿā́rik.
First identify syllable weight
A syllable contains one vowel nucleus. What follows that vowel determines its weight.
| Shape | Weight | Illustration | What matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| CV | light | ma in madrase | short vowel, no coda |
| CVV | heavy | ʿā in maʿārik | long vowel |
| CVC | heavy internally | tab in maktabte | ends in a consonant |
| CVVC / CVCC | superheavy finally | bāt in maktabāt; tabt in katabt | long vowel plus coda, or two final consonants |
The C and V notation is a map, not a spelling formula. A written consonant may belong to the next syllable, and a short vowel absent from ordinary spelling may be part of the spoken word.
Rule 1: stress a final superheavy syllable
If the last syllable ends in a long vowel plus consonant or in two consonants, it attracts stress.
أنا كتبت العنوان عالورقة.
ana katábt el-ʿenwēn ʿal-waraʾa.
I wrote the address on the paper.
هالمكتبات بيسكروا عالسبعة.
hal-maktabā́t byisakkro ʿas-sabʿa.
These libraries close at seven.
In ka-tábt, final -tabt is superheavy. In mak-ta-bā́t, final -bāt is superheavy. Do not move stress to the first syllable simply because English often stresses the beginning of a noun.
Rule 2: otherwise, stress a heavy penult
If the final syllable is not superheavy, look at the penult—the second-to-last syllable. Stress it when it is heavy.
سمعنا عن معارك قوية بالمنطقة.
smiʿna ʿan maʿā́rik ʾawiyye bil-manṭaʾa.
We heard about intense fighting in the area.
مكتبتي زغيرة بس هادية.
maktábte zghīre bass hēdye.
My library is small but quiet.
The penult ʿā in ma-ʿā́-rik is heavy because its vowel is long. The penult tab in mak-táb-te is heavy because it closes in b. This is the same logic even though one syllable is heavy by vowel length and the other by a coda.
Rule 3: otherwise, stress the antepenult
If the final syllable is not superheavy and the penult is light, stress the third-to-last syllable. That three-syllable window gives ordinary مكتبة the pattern máktabe, not *maktabé.
المكتبة فاتحة اليوم؟
el-máktabe fētḥa l-yōm?
Is the library open today?
هي أكلت قبل ما تطلع.
hiyye ákalit ʾabl ma tiṭlaʿ.
She ate before she left.
(informal) Vowel deletion can make the surface word look less transparent than the syllables used by the stress system. That is why “just stress the longest-looking written chunk” fails. The epenthesis and vowel-deletion pages handle those interactions in detail.
Two-syllable and one-syllable words
With only two syllables, the stress window naturally reaches the first syllable unless the final syllable meets the strong final condition. One-syllable words carry their only possible stress.
بدك هاد ولا هاي؟
báddak hā́d walla hā́y?
Do you want this one or this one?
القهوة هون والمي هونيك.
el-ʾáhwe hṓn wil-máyy hōnī́k.
The coffee is here, and the water is over there.
The course begins with هاد hād and هاي hāy. (informal, common Lebanese) هيدا háyda and هيدي háyde have initial stress in this baseline. Syrian, Palestinian, and Jordanian demonstrative inventories must be learned as regional systems, not as alternate stress marks on one universal form.
Morphology can move stress
Adding a suffix changes the last three syllables and can create a heavy penult. Compare the unsuffixed and suffixed forms:
هيدي مكتبة مرتبة.
hayde máktabe mrattabe.
This is a well-organized library.
مكتبتي حد الجامعة.
maktábte ḥadd el-zhēmʿa.
My library is beside the university.
هو كتب الملاحظة الصبح.
huwwe kátab el-mulāḥaẓa ṣ-ṣoboḥ.
He wrote the note this morning.
نحنا كتبنا الملاحظة سوا.
niḥna katábna l-mulāḥaẓa sawa.
We wrote the note together.
The movement is not expressive emphasis. The suffix changes the prosodic word: kátab becomes katábna. The next page treats stress with suffixes systematically.
Stress can help recover grammatical form
Unvocalized Arabic can write different inflected forms alike. Stress, vowels, and context jointly identify the reading.
هي كتبت الرسالة قبل الغدا.
hiyye kátabit er-risēle ʾabl el-ghada.
She wrote the message before lunch.
أنا كتبت الرسالة بعد الغدا.
ana katábt er-risēle baʿd el-ghada.
I wrote the message after lunch.
The first form has three spoken syllables, ká-ta-bit; the second ends in superheavy -tabt. English speakers who flatten both into the same rhythm remove a useful grammatical cue.
Slow and connected speech
Stress survives ordinary reduction. A short unstressed vowel may weaken or disappear, but the prominent syllable does not jump randomly.
| Phrase | Slow practice | Connected Beirut speech | Stress anchor |
|---|---|---|---|
| مكتبة زغيرة | máktabe zghīre | máktabe zghīre | first syllable of maktabe |
| كتبت الرسالة | katábt er-risēle | katábtir-risēle | final cluster of katabt |
| من هون | min hṓn | mn hṓn | long vowel in hōn |

وين المكتبة الجديدة؟
wḗn el-máktabe l-zhdī́de?
Rana: Where is the new library?
حد الجامعة، فوق محل القهوة.
ḥádd el-zhḗmʿa, fṓʾ maḥáll el-ʾáhwe.
Fadi: Beside the university, above the coffee shop.
منيح، بمرق عليها اليوم.
mnī́ḥ, bmóroʾ ʿalḗha l-yṓm.
Rana: Great, I'll stop by today.
Common Mistakes
Stressing every final syllable
❌ مكتبة
maktabÉ
Incorrect — with a light final and light penult, stress the antepenult: máktabe.
✅ المكتبة قريبة من هون.
el-máktabe ʾarībe min hōn.
The library is close to here.
Ignoring a heavy penult
❌ معارك
MÁʿārik
Incorrect — long ā makes the penult heavy: maʿā́rik.
✅ خلصت المعارك من زمان.
khilṣit el-maʿā́rik min zamān.
The fighting ended a long time ago.
Keeping stem stress after a suffix changes the window
❌ كتبنا
KÁtabna
Incorrect — the heavy penult attracts stress: katábna.
✅ كتبنا كل شي بالدفتر.
katábna kell shi bid-daftar.
We wrote everything in the notebook.
Adding formal endings and their stress
❌ المكتبة جديدة
al-maktabatu jadīdatun
Incorrect in ordinary Lebanese — there are no MSA case endings here.
✅ المكتبة جديدة وهادية.
el-máktabe zhdīde w-hēdye.
The library is new and quiet.
Losing emphatics or restoring q and j
❌ طريق الجامعة
tarīq al-jāmiʿa
Incorrect for the baseline — ṭ stays emphatic, ق is ʾ, and ج is zh.
✅ طريق الجامعة طويلة شوي.
ṭarīʾ el-zhēmʿa ṭwīle shwayy.
The road to the university is a little long.
Key Takeaways
Start at the right edge: stress a final superheavy syllable; otherwise stress a heavy penult; otherwise stress the antepenult. Suffixes can change syllable weight and move stress. Reduction affects unstressed vowels, but a word's stress remains structured rather than optional.
