Compliments and Their Responses

A compliment positively evaluates something associated with the listener: appearance, food, a possession, a trait, or a skill. In urban Lebanese, the wording matters, but the response completes the action. يسلمو, شكرا, من ذوقك, a return compliment, a blessing, or an explanation can accept praise while shaping intimacy and modesty.

Lebanese compliment-response research based on both elicited data and naturally occurring sequences found acceptance to be common. That matters because a widespread teaching cliché says Arabic speakers must deny praise. They do not. Responses can accept, expand, deflect, or return the compliment, and choices vary with topic, relationship, setting, prosody, and individual style.

Build the compliment around a specific quality

شو + adjective makes an expressive evaluation (informal). A copular clause such as هاللون كتير لايقلك is more proposition-like, while عجبني... presents the evaluation as the speaker's reaction. Specific praise usually sounds more credible than an unlimited superlative.

shū ḥilwe hal-zhākēt ʿalēk!

That jacket looks so nice on you! (informal appearance compliment to one woman)

hal-ʾaṣṣa ktīr lāyʾitlik, mbarze ʿyūnik.

That haircut really suits you; it brings out your eyes. (warm compliment to one woman)

ʿazhabne kēf rattabet el-afkār; el-ʿarḍ kēn wāḍeḥ min awwalo la-ākhro.

I liked how you organized the ideas; the presentation was clear from beginning to end. (professional skill compliment to one man)

The last example praises observable work, not an essential personality. In professional settings, specific evidence—organization, timing, clarity, a solved problem—makes praise useful and reduces the risk of sounding patronizing.

Topic changes the social risk

Complimenting food or a completed task is usually less personally intrusive than evaluating a stranger's body. Appearance praise depends on familiarity, timing, and what exactly is evaluated. Clothing choice or a new haircut can be affiliative; sexualized comments, repeated scrutiny, or praise tied to weight can be unwelcome regardless of grammatical politeness.

el-fostēn ktīr anīʾ, wil-lōn mnēseb lal-mnēsabe.

The dress is very elegant, and the color suits the occasion. (careful compliment on styling)

bētak ktīr mrīḥ, khoṣūṣan hal-ʾaʿde ḥadd esh-shobbēk.

Your home is very comfortable, especially this sitting area by the window. (compliment on a possession and arrangement)

ṭabkhtak ṭayybe ktīr, wil-bahārāt mawzūne.

Your cooking is delicious, and the seasoning is perfectly balanced. (food and skill compliment to one man)

The speaker's right to evaluate also matters. A supervisor praising a junior's “surprising” competence can imply low expectations. Among colleagues, حلّك لهالمشكلة كان ذكي “your solution to this problem was smart” targets the work more safely than إنت شاطر بالنسبة لعمرك “you're good for your age.”

💡
Compliment a choice, result, or demonstrated skill when personal evaluation would be intrusive. Grammatical warmth does not override boundaries.

Blessings can frame praise

ما شاء الله can preface admiration, especially around children, homes, success, health, or something understood as a blessing (neutral; religiously rooted and widely conventional). Speakers differ in how often they use it and how explicitly religious it feels. الله يخليلك ياه wishes that a valued person or thing remain for the addressee.

mā shāʾ alla, hōl el-wardāt ṭālʿīn ktīr ḥilwīn.

Mashallah, these flowers have grown beautifully. (admiration framed by a blessing formula)

Your son is charming and knows how to speak with adults; may God preserve him for you. (warm family-oriented compliment to one man)

Do not add a blessing mechanically to every compliment. A secular speaker, a quick workplace exchange, or praise of a routine spreadsheet may favor شغلك مرتب without a formula. Register and speaker practice are part of accuracy.

Accepting a compliment is ordinary

يسلمو and شكرا straightforwardly accept appreciation. من ذوقك attributes the kind evaluation to the complimenter's good taste. فرحتني / فرحتيني names the positive effect. These can combine.

ysalmo, ʿanzhad farraḥtīne.

Thank you—you really made me happy. (warm acceptance to one woman)

shokran ktīr, hād min zawʾak.

Thank you so much; that's kind of you. (neutral acceptance to one man)

ysalmo, ishtaghalet ʿalē fatra mnīḥa w-ktīr mabsūṭa bin-natīzhe.

Thanks; I worked on it for a good while, and I'm very happy with the result. (acceptance plus information; said by a woman)

Bare شكرا is not rude. In an intimate, emotionally rich sequence, however, it may sound comparatively brief or transaction-like if the other person expected engagement. Adding عنجد فرحتني or returning warmth can fit that local moment. This is contextual markedness, not a ban on thanking.

Deflection, return compliments, and modesty

A response may redirect credit—الفضل للفريق كله “the credit goes to the whole team”—or return affiliation—إنت كمان ذوقك حلو “you have great taste too.” The response can preserve modesty without rejecting the complimenter's judgment.

ysalmo, bass el-faḍel lal-farīʾ killo; kill wāḥad sēʿad b-shaghle.

Thank you, but the whole team deserves the credit; everyone helped with something. (acceptance plus redistributed credit)

ʿyūnik el-ḥilwīn; inte dēyman btshūfe l-ḥilw bin-nēs.

It's your beautiful eyes—you always see the good in people. (affectionate formula and return praise to one woman)

The second response is intimate and can sound flirtatious outside a close relationship. A formula is not socially neutral merely because it is conventional.

💡
Acceptance and modesty are compatible. Start with an appreciation token, then share credit or add context; do not erase the other person's positive act.

Complimenting a possession does not transfer ownership

In familiar talk, the owner may answer praise of an item with تكرم عينك or إذا عجبك خدها “if you like it, take it.” Depending on delivery and relationship, this can be generous hyperbole, a playful conventional offer, or a genuine offer. The next turns decide.

sēʿtak ktīr ḥilwe, taṣmīma basīṭ.

Your watch is really nice; its design is simple. (possession compliment to one man)

tikram ʿaynak, iza ʿazhabak khodha.

Anything for you—if you like it, take it. (potentially conventional or genuine offer to one man)

Do not simply pocket the watch. A safe appreciative uptake is تتهنى فيها، قصدي بس إنها حلوة “enjoy it; I only meant that it's nice.” If the owner makes a concrete renewed offer and the context supports transfer, clarify rather than guessing. This follows the same cumulative uptake principles as offers and conventional insistence.

Mini-dialogue 1: close friends after a haircut

Setting: two close friends; appearance talk is established and welcome.

shū ḥilw shaʿrik hēk, el-ʾaṣṣa ktīr lāyʾitlik.

Maya: Your hair looks so nice like this; the cut really suits you. (warm appearance compliment to one woman)

ysalmo yā rūḥe, kent khēyfe ma tizbaṭ.

Lina: Thanks, love; I was worried it wouldn't turn out well. (intimate acceptance plus disclosure)

The response accepts the praise and adds a story, giving the complimenter another affiliative turn.

Mini-dialogue 2: host and newer guest after dinner

Setting: a guest is visiting a colleague's home for the first time. Praise is warm but not overly intimate.

ysalmo īdēk, es-samak kēn ṭayyeb wir-rozz ṭileʿ maẓbūṭ ʿal-ākher.

Guest: Bless your hands; the fish was delicious, and the rice came out perfect. (food compliment to one woman)

alla ysallmak, mabsūṭa inno ʿazhabak. baddak shwayy ziyēde?

Host: Thank you; I'm glad you liked it. Would you like a little more? (warm uptake and offer to one man)

The guest's يسلمو إيديك is both thanks and praise. The host accepts instead of denying the food's quality, then moves naturally to hospitality.

Repair: when praise lands as intrusive or sarcastic

Exaggeration with a flat or drawn-out contour can be heard as irony. Personal appearance praise can also exceed the relationship.

wāw, shū hal-lūk el-yōm!

Wow, what's with this look today! (ambiguous: admiration or mockery depending on prosody)

ʾaṣde inno ikhtiyār el-alwēn ktīr ḥilw, bass wāḍeḥ inno taʿlīʾe ḍāyaʾak, baʿtizer.

I meant that the color choice is really nice, but it's clear my comment bothered you; I apologize. (repair that specifies the praise and recognizes its impact; to one man)

The repair narrows the evaluation from the person's whole “look” to a styling choice and leaves room for the recipient's discomfort to count.

Common Mistakes

Assuming praise must be denied

Interactionally counterproductive as a routine response — it rejects both the praise and the complimenter's judgment.

ysalmo, tʿibet ʿalē w-ktīr friḥet inno ʿazhabak.

Thanks; I worked hard on it, and I'm really glad you liked it. (acceptance to one man)

Treating bare thanks as universally cold

Incorrect rule — a brief appreciation token can be a complete response in many settings.

shokran. raʾyak mohim la-ile.

Thank you. Your opinion matters to me. (concise but engaged response to one man)

Importing a formal praise formula into intimate talk

Register mismatch — this formal written praise sounds staged between intimates.

shū ḥilwe hal-kinze ʿalēk yā ḥabībte.

That sweater looks so nice on you, love. (intimate compliment to one woman)

Taking a conventional offer literally without uptake

Pragmatic failure — the formula alone does not establish that ownership has actually transferred.

ʾiltlo tithanna fīha, ʾaṣde bass inno s-sēʿa ḥilwe.

I told him, ‘Enjoy it; I only meant that the watch is nice.’

Key Takeaways

  • Lebanese compliments commonly target appearance, food, possessions, and skill; specificity makes praise more credible.
  • Acceptance is ordinary. يسلمو، شكرا، من ذوقك, formulas, explanations, and returned warmth can combine.
  • Blessings and deflections are resources, not compulsory cultural scripts.
  • Relationship, topic, prosody, and the recipient's uptake determine whether praise feels affiliative, intrusive, ironic, or flirtatious.
