Passive Participles versus Result Adjectives

The same Lebanese form can describe the result of a particular event or function as an ordinary adjective. الباب مسكّر may mean “the door has been closed” with a recent closing event in view, or simply “the door is closed.” المحل معروف may historically look passive, but usually means “the shop is well-known,” with no live act of somebody knowing it.

There is no single suffix that separates these readings. Event implication, compatibility with an agent phrase, degree modification, permanence, and lexical convention form a cluster of diagnostics. Use them together rather than forcing every m- word into “passive” or “adjective.” The morphology itself is mapped under Passive Participles of Derived Forms.

A continuum, not two sealed boxes

Some forms strongly evoke a completed event, some strongly name a property, and many allow both.

العنوان مكتوب عالورقة بخط رامي.

el-ʿinwēn maktūb ʿal-waraʾa b-khaṭṭ Rāme.

The address is written on the paper in Rami's handwriting. (neutral; event/result with recoverable writer)

الاتفاق المكتوب أوضح من الحكي الشفهي.

el-ittifāʾ el-maktūb awḍaḥ min el-ḥake sh-shafahe.

A written agreement is clearer than a verbal understanding. (professional; classificatory property)

💡
A participial history does not freeze a word's grammar forever. Speakers may store مبسوط as “happy” and مرتب as “tidy” even though their shapes remain connected to verbs.

Diagnostic 1: does a particular event matter?

An event-linked participle invites questions such as “who did it?” or “when?” A property reading answers “what is it like?” and can hold without a salient event.

الملف محذوف من النظام من مبارح.

el-malaf maḥdhūf min en-niẓām min mbēreḥ.

The file has been deleted from the system since yesterday. (professional; specific result event)

هالممر ضيق ومسكر من طرف واحد.

hal-mamarr ḍayyaʾ w-msakkar min ṭaraf wāḥad.

This passage is narrow and closed at one end. (neutral; spatial property, no salient closer)

A duration with من can measure the result state: مسكّر من مبارح says how long the closure has held. It need not tell you exactly when the closing action occurred.

Diagnostic 2: can it be graded?

Ordinary adjectives readily combine with كتير، شوي، أكتر. A categorical event result is less naturally graded, though the physical state may allow partial extent. This is evidence, not a mathematical test.

بيته مرتب كتير، وكل غرض إله محل.

bēto mrattab ktīr, w-kill gharaḍ ilo maḥall.

His home is very tidy, and everything has its place. (informal; gradable lexical property)

الشباك مفتوح شوي حتى يفوت هوا.

esh-shobbēk maftūḥ shwayy ḥatta yfūt hawa.

The window is open a little so some air can come in. (informal; gradable physical extent)

By contrast, الرسالة مكتوبة كتير is not a normal way to say “the letter is very written.” You can grade manner or quality instead: مكتوبة منيح “written well,” مكتوبة بوضوح “written clearly.”

التعليمات مكتوبة بوضوح، بس الخط صغير كتير.

et-taʿlīmāt maktūbe b-wuḍūḥ, bass el-khaṭṭ zghīr ktīr.

The instructions are written clearly, but the print is very small. (neutral; manner modifies writing, degree modifies adjective)

Diagnostic 3: is an agent phrase natural?

A live passive reading can support an author, preparer, or other responsible participant, although Lebanese often prefers an active finite clause when the agent matters. A fully lexical adjective resists a literal agent.

التقرير محضر من فريق مستقل.

et-taʾrīr mḥaḍḍar min farīʾ mostaʾill.

The report was prepared by an independent team. (formal/professional; explicit agent)

هيدا مطعم معروف بالمنطقة من زمان.

hayda maṭʿam maʿrūf bil-minṭaʾa min zamēn.

This restaurant has long been well-known in the area. (neutral; stable reputation, not a particular knowing event)

English by tempts learners to attach an agent to every passive-looking form. In natural Lebanese, مبسوط من رامي means “happy with/because of Rami,” not “made happy by Rami” as a compositional passive. The lexical adjective controls its own preposition.

Diagnostic 4: temporary result or established property?

Time phrases can make a temporary result salient; generic contexts can turn the same form into a classification. Permanence is only a tendency—doors can stay closed permanently, and reputations can change.

المصعد معطل اليوم، استعملوا الدرج.

el-miṣʿad mʿaṭṭal el-yōm, istaʿmlo d-darazh.

The elevator is out of order today, so use the stairs. (neutral; temporary result state)

هاد الموديل معطل دايما وقطعه غالية.

hād el-mōdēl mʿaṭṭal dāyma w-ʾiṭaʿo ghālye.

This model is always breaking down, and its parts are expensive. (informal; characteristic property judgment)

The second sentence does not merely locate one breakdown; it evaluates the model as unreliable. Context supplies the lexicalized property reading.

Finite event versus participial result

The finite perfect asserts an event. The participle predicates the resulting condition and agrees with the affected noun.

العامل سكر المدخل بعد التنظيف.

el-ʿēmel sakkar el-madkhal baʿd et-tanḍīf.

The worker closed the entrance after cleaning. (neutral; finite event)

المدخل مسكر هلق، فوتوا من الباب التاني.

el-madkhal msakkar hallaʾ, fūto min el-bēb et-tēne.

The entrance is closed now; go in through the other door. (neutral; current result)

English often needs was closed / has been closed / is closed. Lebanese participial predication itself carries no one-to-one tense label; discourse and time expressions resolve the reading. See Perfect versus Participle.

💡
If your sentence tells what happened, prefer a finite verb. If it locates the subject in an affected state, a participle is likely. If the word accepts degree and names a characteristic, treat its adjective use as part of its lexicon.

Lexicalization can change complements

Once a participle becomes an adjective, it may develop meanings and prepositions not transparently predicted by the source verb: مشغول بـ “busy with,” مبسوط بـ/من “happy with/about,” معروف بـ “known for.” These must be learned as adjective frames.

هي مشغولة بتحضير الطلبات ومبسوطة بالنتيجة.

hiyye mashghūle b-taḥḍīr eṭ-ṭalabāt w-mabsūṭa bin-natīzhe.

She's busy preparing the orders and happy with the result. (informal; two lexical adjectives with بـ complements)

Do not reconstruct a hypothetical present agent for either adjective. Morphological history helps organize vocabulary, but synchronically speakers select the adjective and its complement as a stored unit.

Dialogue: event or property?

ليش الباب مسكر؟ حدا سكره؟

lēsh el-bēb msakkar? ḥada sakkaro?

Nour: Why is the door closed? Did someone close it? (informal dialogue; result invites an event inference)

لأ، هيدا الباب مسكر دايما لأنو ما بينفتح منيح.

laʾ, hayda l-bēb msakkar dāyma laʾanno ma byinfeteḥ mnīḥ.

Jad: No, this door is always kept closed because it doesn't open properly. (informal dialogue; characteristic policy/property)

Common Mistakes

Forcing a live event behind a lexical adjective

❌ هي مبسوطة، يعني في حدا بسطها.

Incorrect — مبسوطة ordinarily means ‘happy/content’ and need not imply a causer.

✅ هي مبسوطة بالبيت الجديد وبالحي.

hiyye mabsūṭa bil-bēt el-zhdīd w-bil-ḥayy.

She's happy with the new home and the neighborhood.

Using degree where manner is intended

❌ الرسالة مكتوبة كتير.

Incorrect for ‘well written’ — كتير cannot by itself express the quality of the writing.

✅ الرسالة مكتوبة منيح وحجتها واضحة.

er-risēle maktūbe mnīḥ w-ḥozhzheta wāḍḥa.

The letter is well written, and its argument is clear.

Forgetting agreement because English “closed” never changes

❌ الشبابيك مسكر طول النهار.

Incorrect agreement: masculine singular مسكر does not match الشبابيك. The common grouped nonhuman reading takes feminine singular مسكرة; individuated plural مسكرين is also possible in a suitable context.

✅ الشبابيك مسكرة طول النهار كرمال الغبرة.

esh-shabēbīk msakkare ṭūl en-nahār kermēl el-ghabra.

The windows stay closed all day because of the dust. (common nonhuman plural agreement)

Translating the participle as an English progressive

❌ المدخل مسكر يعني العامل عم بيسكره هلق.

Incorrect inference — مسكر describes the resulting closed state, not necessarily an ongoing action.

✅ المدخل مسكر، بس ما منعرف إيمتى سكروه.

el-madkhal msakkar, bass ma mniʿraf ēmta sakkarūh.

The entrance is closed, but we don't know when they closed it.

Key Takeaways

Passive participle and result adjective are endpoints on a continuum. A salient event, agent compatibility, and result duration favor a participial analysis; degree, characteristic contexts, specialized meaning, and stored prepositions favor an adjective analysis. The same form may support both. Agreement follows adjective-like syntax, while tense and event timing come from context rather than the participle alone.
