Putting Adjectives before Nouns

English builds descriptions before reaching the noun. Neutral Lebanese starts with the entity and expands rightward: فندق زغير وهادي “a small, quiet hotel.” Translating in English order produces strings that are ungrammatical, difficult to parse, or unexpectedly rhetorical.

The repair is deeper than moving one word. A Lebanese attributive adjective follows its noun and agrees in gender, number, and definiteness. A definite noun followed by a bare adjective is normally a sentence—القهوة غالية “the coffee is expensive”—not the phrase “the expensive coffee.” Preposed adjective-like forms do exist, but they are elatives, fixed expressions, or fronted evaluations rather than neutral English-style attributes.

The repair algorithm

  1. Say the head noun first.
  2. Add the closest classifying adjective, then further descriptions.
  3. Match gender and number.
  4. If the noun phrase is definite, repeat الـ on every attributive adjective.
  5. If an adjective appears first, identify the special construction; do not assume ordinary attribution.
💡
Build the phrase in Lebanese order from the start: noun → class/type → color/size → evaluation. Do not compose an English stack and reverse it under time pressure.

Error pair 1: neutral descriptions are noun-first

❌ حجزنا هادي زغير فندق بالمينا.

Incorrect neutral word order copied from English ‘a quiet small hotel.’

✅ حجزنا فندق زغير وهادي قريب من المينا.

ḥazhazna fondoʾ zghīr w-hēde ʾrīb min el-mīna.

We booked a small, quiet hotel near the port. (neutral postnominal descriptions)

The conjunction و presents “small” and “quiet” as parallel descriptions. Without و, a compact stack is possible, but each adjective still follows the noun.

Error pair 2: gender still matters after reordering

Moving the adjective after the noun is not enough if its form remains masculine.

❌ جبت قهوة طيب وسخن.

Incorrect — قهوة is feminine, so both attributive adjectives must be feminine.

✅ جبت قهوة طيبة وسخنة للاجتماع.

zhibet ʾahwe ṭayybe w-sekhne lal-izhtimēʿ.

I brought good hot coffee for the meeting. (neutral feminine agreement)

For human plurals, use ordinary plural adjectives; for nonhuman plurals, Lebanese permits contextual grouping patterns discussed on the dedicated agreement pages. Word order does not cancel agreement.

Error pair 3: definite attribution repeats the article

English uses one the. Lebanese marks the noun and every adjective that belongs inside the definite phrase.

❌ أخدت الشنطة خفيفة زرقا.

Wrong for ‘the light blue bag’ — bare adjectives after the definite noun are heard as predicates or an ill-formed stack.

✅ أخدت الشنطة الخفيفة الزرقا يلي حد الباب.

akhadet esh-shanṭa l-khfīfe z-zarʾa yalle ḥadd el-bēb.

She took the light blue bag beside the door. (neutral definite attributive stack)

The repeated articles tell the listener that الخفيفة الزرقا helps identify one bag. See definiteness agreement.

Error pair 4: attribution versus predication

With a definite noun, article mismatch creates a clause boundary.

❌ بدي اشتري السيارة سريعة.

Wrong for ‘I want to buy the fast car’; السيارة سريعة means ‘the car is fast.’

✅ بدي اشتري السيارة السريعة يلي جربناها مبارح.

badde ishtre s-sayyāra s-sarīʿa yalle zharrabnēha mbēreḥ.

I want to buy the fast car we tried yesterday. (definite attributive adjective)

Compare the complete sentence:

السيارة سريعة، بس بتصرف بنزين كتير.

es-sayyāra srīʿa, bass btiṣrof benzīn ktīr.

The car is fast, but it uses a lot of gas. (bare predicate adjective)

💡
After a definite noun, الـadjective stays inside the noun phrase; a bare adjective normally begins the predicate. This article contrast can change a phrase into a sentence.

Multiple adjectives: avoid importing English hierarchy

English has strong preferences such as opinion–size–age–color. Lebanese still has ordering tendencies, but it builds after the noun. Classifying modifiers such as nationality, material, or purpose often sit close to the noun; later adjectives add size, color, age, or evaluation. و makes equal descriptions clearer.

❌ اشترينا كبيرة جديدة خشب طاولة.

Incorrect English-shaped stack with the head stranded at the end.

✅ اشترينا طاولة خشب جديدة وكبيرة للسفرة.

ishtarēna ṭāwlet khashab zhdīde w-kbīre lis-sofra.

We bought a large new wooden table for the dining room. (neutral rightward expansion)

بدنا موظفة لبنانية جديدة عندها خبرة بالمبيعات.

baddna mwaẓẓafe libnēniyye zhdīde ʿinda khibra bil-mabīʿāt.

We need a new Lebanese employee with sales experience. (professional spoken; classifying nisba before descriptive recency)

Order can guide scope, but it is not safe enough for a legal distinction. Add و, a relative clause, or an explicit contrast when grouping matters. See adjective stacks and adjective scope.

Preposed forms that are not ordinary attributes

Some adjective-like forms legitimately precede a noun. Elatives such as أحلى can mean “best/nicest,” ordinals occur in expressions such as أول مرة, and lexicalized phrases must be learned whole.

هاد أحلى خبر سمعناه هالأسبوع.

hād aḥla khabar smiʿnē hāl-osbūʿ.

This is the best news we've heard this week. (informal; preposed elative construction)

هاي أول مرة بزور فيها صيدا بالشتوية.

hāy awwal marra bzūr fiyya Ṣayda bish-shitwiyye.

This is the first time I've visited Sidon in winter. (informal; conventional ordinal expression)

These patterns do not authorize زغير بيت for “a small house.” Their grammar and meanings are specialized.

Grammatical fronting with the wrong discourse effect

An adjective may be fronted as a predicate or exclamation. It presents the evaluation first and often sounds surprised, admiring, or critical.

غالية هاي القهوة!

ghēlye hāy el-ʾahwe!

This coffee is expensive! (informal; marked surprised evaluation)

هاي القهوة الغالية من المحمصة الجديدة.

hāy el-ʾahwe l-ghālye min el-maḥmaṣa l-zhdīde.

This expensive coffee is from the new roastery. (neutral definite attribution)

The first is grammatical but wrong for a neutral request identifying which coffee you mean. It means roughly “expensive, this coffee!” The second places الغالية inside the noun phrase.

Error pair 6: rhetorical fronting is not a noun phrase

❌ حلو هالمطعم حجزنا للعشا.

Misleading for ‘we booked this nice restaurant’; حلو هالمطعم is a fronted evaluation, not an attributive object.

✅ حجزنا بهالمطعم الحلو للعشا الجمعة.

ḥazhazna b-hal-maṭʿam el-ḥelo lil-ʿasha l-zhomʿa.

We booked dinner at this nice restaurant on Friday. (neutral definite attribution)

Use حلو هالمطعم! independently when you genuinely want the evaluative effect.

Short repair dialogue

شفت الأحمر الجديد الجاكيت بالمحل.

shifet el-aḥmar el-zhdīd el-zhākēt bil-maḥall.

Learner: I saw the red new jacket at the shop. (English adjective order; repair target)

بلش بالاسم: شفت الجاكيت الجديد الأحمر.

ballesh bil-ism: shifet el-zhākēt el-zhdīd el-aḥmar.

Partner: Start with the noun: ‘I saw the new red jacket.’ (informal coaching)

وإذا بس بدي قول إنو الجاكيت جديد؟

w-iza bass badde ʾūl inno l-zhākēt zhdīd?

Learner: And if I only want to say that the jacket is new?

قول: الجاكيت جديد. بلا أل عالصفة، صارت خبر.

ʾūl: el-zhākēt zhdīd. bla al ʿaṣ-ṣife, ṣārit khabar.

Partner: Say: ‘The jacket is new.’ Without the article on the adjective, it becomes the predicate.

Common Mistakes

Putting a color before its noun

❌ بدي الأزرق القميص.

Incorrect for the neutral phrase ‘the blue shirt.’

✅ بدي القميص الأزرق يلي عالرف.

badde l-ʾamīṣ el-azraʾ yalle ʿar-raff.

I want the blue shirt on the shelf.

Marking only the noun as definite

❌ بعرف البنت جديدة.

Wrong for ‘I know the new girl’; البنت جديدة is the clause ‘the girl is new.’

✅ بعرف البنت الجديدة من الجامعة.

baʿref el-binet el-zhdīde min el-zhēmʿa.

I know the new girl from university.

Leaving later adjectives outside definiteness agreement

❌ صلحنا الباب القديم مكسور.

Ill-formed for one definite phrase ‘the old broken door’; مكسور is heard as a predicate without a complete clause.

✅ صلحنا الباب القديم المكسور قبل المطر.

ṣallaḥna l-bēb el-ʾdīm el-maksūr ʾabl el-maṭar.

We fixed the old broken door before the rain.

Treating every adjective-first string as impossible

❌ أحلى خبر ترتيب غلط ولازم نقول خبر أحلى.

Incorrect generalization — أحلى خبر is a productive elative construction meaning ‘best/nicest news.’

✅ هيدا أحلى خبر وصلنا من زمان.

hayda aḥla khabar wiṣilna min zamēn.

This is the best news we've received in a long time.

Key Takeaways

Neutral Lebanese attributive adjectives follow the noun and agree with it. Definite attributes repeat الـ; a bare adjective after a definite noun normally predicates something about it. Multiple descriptions expand to the right, with و or a relative clause available for scope repair. Preposed elatives and ordinals are special constructions, while fronted adjectives such as غالية هاي القهوة are marked evaluations—not English-style noun phrases.
