Lebanese وقت ماwaʾet ma means “whenever,” “any time that,” or “at whatever time.” It does more than locate one event: it leaves the timing open, ranges over repeated occasions, or tells someone that any convenient time is acceptable.
Compare لمّا تخلص، دقلي “when you finish, call me,” which points to one expected finishing point, with وقت ما تخلص، دقلي “whenever you finish, call me,” which deliberately avoids fixing that point. The verb forms inside the clauses still express habituality, progress, completion, or projected time; وقت ما contributes the open or repeatable temporal relation.
The core free-choice meaning
In invitations and arrangements, وقت ما بدّك is one of the clearest examples. It means that the addressee may choose the time within the relevant practical limits.
وقت ما بدك، فيك تمرق تاخد المفتاح.
waʾet ma baddak, fīk timroʾ tākhod el-miftēḥ.
Whenever you want, you can stop by and pick up the key. (free choice for one man)
ابعتيلي الجواب وقت ما تكوني جاهزة.
ibʿatīle l-zhawēb waʾet ma tkūne zhēhze.
Send me the answer whenever you're ready. (open timing; addressed to one woman)
نحنا موجودين هون وقت ما تحتاجونا.
niḥna mawzhūdīn hōn waʾet ma tiḥtāzhūna.
We're here whenever you need us. (unrestricted availability to a group)
English whenever can sound either generous (“any time you like”) or dismissive (“whenever”). Lebanese intonation and context create the same social difference. A warm contour makes وقت ما بدّك an offer; a flat delayed reply can suggest impatience.
Repeated occasions and paired habits
With b-imperfect forms, وقت ما can mean “on every relevant occasion that.” The first clause defines the occasions; the second gives the routine response.
وقت ما بكون بالمكتب بكير، بفطر مع رنا.
waʾet ma bkūn bil-maktab bkīr, bfṭor maʿ Rana.
Whenever I'm at the office early, I have breakfast with Rana. (paired current habits)
وقت ما بتقطع الكهربا، الجيران بيشغلوا المولد.
waʾet ma btiʾṭaʿ el-kahraba, el-zhīrān byishaghghlo l-mwalled.
Whenever the power goes out, the neighbors start the generator. (repeated trigger and response)
وقت ما منعمل قهوة، منترك فنجان للحارس.
waʾet ma mniʿmal ʾahwe, mnitrok finzhēn lal-ḥāres.
Whenever we make coffee, we leave a cup for the guard. (repeated considerate routine)
The b-marker belongs to the habitual predicates, not to وقت ما. With a single projected occasion, a bare imperfect is also possible; with a state such as بدّك or a participle such as جاهزة, no b-imperfect choice arises at all.
Temporal overlap: what is happening at those times
The construction can define intervals rather than punctual triggers. Progressive material inside the time clause identifies an activity in progress, and the other clause states what normally holds during it.
وقت ما بكون عم بسوق، ما برد عالتلفون.
waʾet ma bkūn ʿam bsūʾ, ma brodd ʿat-tilifōn.
Whenever I'm driving, I don't answer the phone. (ongoing interval and standing rule)
ما تقاطعها وقت ما تكون عم بتشرح الفكرة.
ma tʾāṭeʿa waʾet ma tkūn ʿam btishraḥ el-fikra.
Don't interrupt her whenever she's explaining the idea. (repeated overlapping situations)
وقت ما بيكونوا عم بيجددوا المكتب، منشتغل من البيت.
waʾet ma byikūno ʿam byizhadddo l-maktab, mnishtighel min el-bēt.
Whenever they're renovating the office, we work from home. (a recurring overlap between an activity and a policy)
These overlap examples still range over repeatable occasions: each time the activity is under way, the main-clause response holds. For one dated episode, prefer لمّا or وقت اللي; do not use وقت ما merely as a word-for-word substitute for English while.
A single boundary versus open timing
The following minimal contrast keeps the planned action constant and changes only how tightly the time is identified.
لما تخلص شغلك، منبلش الاجتماع.
lamma tkhalliṣ shoghlak, mnballesh el-izhtimēʿ.
When you finish your work, we'll start the meeting. (one expected boundary)
وقت ما تخلص، منبلش الاجتماع.
waʾet ma tkhalliṣ, mnballesh el-izhtimēʿ.
Whenever you're finished, we'll start the meeting. (timing left to you)
The second sentence can be considerate, but it can also be impractical if other participants need an exact schedule. Grammar does not remove real-world constraints: وقت ما بدّك normally means “any time within the understood window,” not literally any moment in eternity.
For the single-boundary system, review لمّا. For an actual question about the time, use إمتى: إمتى بتخلص؟ “When do you finish?”
Aspect combinations across time frames
There is no one tense mechanically required by وقت ما. The following patterns are useful production models.
| Meaning | Time clause | Main clause |
|---|---|---|
Whenever we arrived early, we used to sit outside and drink water. (past repeated routine)
وقت ما تكون جاهز، منراجع الأرقام سوا.
waʾet ma tkūn zhēhez, mnrāzheʿ el-arʾām sawa.
Whenever you're ready, we'll review the figures together. (freely chosen next step)
English often uses present morphology after whenever for future time. Lebanese likewise avoids inserting رح automatically into the subordinate clause, but the reason is Lebanese clause licensing, not an English tense rule.
Clause position and prosody
A fronted وقت ما clause establishes a standing frame. A final one adds or loosens the timing after the main message.
وقت ما بتحتاج مساعدة، خبرني.
waʾet ma btiḥtāzh mosēʿade, khabberne.
Whenever you need help, tell me. (availability frame first)
خبرني وقت ما بتحتاج مساعدة.
khabberne waʾet ma btiḥtāzh mosēʿade.
Tell me whenever you need help. (request first, open timing afterward)
The truth conditions are close, but the first sounds like a general offer; the second foregrounds the requested action.
Register and related forms
وقت ما is ordinary urban Lebanese (informal/neutral). وقت اللي can identify “the time when” a more specific episode occurred, while كل ما emphasizes every recurrence. Formal كلّما and متى ما (formal/MSA) occur in writing and elevated speech; importing them into an otherwise casual exchange changes the register.
The spelling has two words: وقت ما. The ق remains in Arabic but is pronounced [ʔ] in the Beirut baseline, hence waʾet ma. Speakers who retain [q] or use other realizations are using a regional, community, or formal-style variant; the guide does not mix those into the production model.

baʿd maʿe awrāʾak. ēmta bnēsebak timroʾ?
Maya: I still have your papers. When does it suit you to stop by?
وقت ما تكوني بالمكتب، أنا قريب.
waʾet ma tkūne bil-maktab, ana ʾrīb.

طيب، بكتبلك وقت ما اوصل هونيك.
ṭayyeb, biktoblak waʾet ma ūṣal hūnīk.
Maya: Okay, I'll message you whenever I get there. (clause-internal وقت ما)

Common Mistakes
Using open timing for one fixed scheduled point
❌ وقت ما يبلش القطار الساعة سبعة، بكون بالمحطة.
Awkward for one fixed departure at seven — وقت ما wrongly presents the time as open or repeatable.
✅ لما يطلع القطار الساعة سبعة، بكون بالمحطة.
lamma yiṭlaʿ el-ʾiṭār es-sēʿa sabʿa, bkūn bil-maḥaṭṭa.
When the train leaves at seven, I'll be at the station. (one scheduled boundary)
Treating ما as negation
❌ وقت ما بدك يعني الوقت يلي ما بدك ياه.
Incorrect analysis — ما is part of the open-time linker here; it does not negate بدك.
✅ وقت ما بدك منقدر نحكي بالموضوع.
waʾet ma baddak mniʾdar niḥke bil-mawḍūʿ.
Whenever you want, we can talk about the issue.
Adding رح mechanically in the open-time clause
❌ وقت ما رح تكوني جاهزة، منبلش.
Incorrect production model — a projected open-time clause normally uses bare تكوني.
✅ وقت ما تكوني جاهزة، منبلش بالشغل.
waʾet ma tkūne zhēhze, mnballesh bish-shoghol.
Whenever you're ready, we'll start working. (to one woman)
Dropping a required object suffix
❌ هالاستمارة، وقت ما تعبي ابعتلي.
Incorrect for an object-topic reading — the form must be resumed on both verbs.
✅ هالاستمارة، وقت ما تعبيها ابعتيلي ياها.
hal-istimāra, waʾet ma tʿabbīha ibʿatīle yēha.
This form—whenever you fill it out, send it to me. (to one woman; resumption in both clauses)
Key Takeaways
Use وقت ما when timing is repeatable, unrestricted, or left to someone’s choice. Habitual b-imperfect forms pair recurring occasions with routines; progressive material defines overlapping intervals; bare forms can locate an open future point. Use لمّا for one identifiable boundary and إمتى to ask what the time is. Formal كلّما or متى ما belongs to a different register.
